Sayuri Kinoshita was a Japanese freediver. She was the first in her country to hold a world record in freediving, with a dive of 72 meters in the discipline Constant Weight No Fins in 2016. She also set a world record in Free Immersion, where she pulled herself 97 meters down and back up the dive line. She was the 6th woman in the world to reach the 100 meter mark on her own power - with a monofin.
She was also the most universally beloved freediver, as she was known for her supportive, kind, and fun nature, always cheering other athletes on from the sidelines. She'd spent hours after her dives in the water, celebrating all the dives. Her positive energy created a wonderful atmosphere around her, and athletes admired her not only for her skill and talent, but for her attitude.
On July 11th 2019, after a night out, she had forgotten her key and tried to climb to the balcony of her 4th story apartment. She fell and sustained serious injuries. She was rushed to the hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries on July 15th, surrounded by her family and freediving friends. She was 30 years old.
This video was made at the request of her family, to be played at her memorial service on the 18th of July, 2019. I've added the words to tell her story to a possibly larger audience, who might not have heard of Sayuri or of freediving. She was a remarkable athlete and a very good friend to many - i hope that comes across.

She is a big reason why I was inspired to change my life and why I want to start freediving, just for fun, I'm not there yet but I'm working hard to make it happen. I even quit smoking to prepare. The day I dive into the south pacific waters will be in honor of her.

I saws the YT video of her 97 meter accomplishment, I thought she was very determined and brave. Let that be a lesson to us; as we achieve and accomplish against the backdrop of doubt, let us not become so accomplished that we also forget our human limitations. Peace to you Sayuri, you brought a lot of joy. I am always amazed at both the strength and weaknesses of the human. Let us try to exist in peace and safety.

I don't do apnea training because I dive, I don't have the opportunity to do so in my home town, I do apnea training because I am an ice swimmer and my world begins to rise below seven degrees Celsius. I will commemorate Sayuri by giving her name to my Suzuki GSXR1000R on the bike this season to accompany my races. She won't have found any joy in motorsport, which I can't blame her for, but to drive with 300Kmh over the earth and to know that a mistake has consequences, she would understand that very well. Therefore it is quite fitting. The most incisive people often leave our community too early. Sayuri left too early.
