In 1981 some great musicians left us including Bill Haley, Bob Marley and Harry Chapin. We lost many others including Allen Ludden, Anwar Sadat, William Holden, Jack Albertson and Natalie Wood to name a few. May they all rest in peace.

I remembet him from College Bowl, the quiz show that would pit four students each from two diiferent colleges in a battle of trivia to see who could win the most scholarship money for their schools. A lot of the schools were small or regional schools that many people had not heard of and that sometimes led to an increase of interest in those schools because these college kids were really intelligent and the questions were a lot deeper than the usual trivia shows.

Except not as many people smoke or least not heavily as actors did in Golden Age era of Hollywood like Humphrey Bogart for instance smoked 3-4 packs a day of unfiltered cigarettes along with heavy drinking leading to his death at age 57 in 1957 of esophageal cancer. Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, Judy Garland, John Wayne, Errol Flynn all died relatively young from years of smoking, drinking or both or in Judy Garland was addicted to alcohol and drugs leading to her death from barbiturate overdose in 1969. John Wayne’s death from cancer from the radiation from a film set near a bomb testing site and led to his and several co stars and even the directors death from cancer but Wayne’s 3-4 pack a day smoking habit for over 30 years didn’t help.

Even sadder with Allen Ludden's death was that Jack Clark longtime Password announcer also died in 1988 from bone cancer. He was 62 as was Ludden first GE College Bowl host. (Clark also hosted some Password segments.) He too should have been mentioned!

I was 17 years old in 1981. Even though Natalie Wood's death was tragic, I remember feeling at the time like she'd lived a full life but she really didn't. She was only 43 when she passed. I guess to a 17 year old, that seemed like a full life but it's actually tragically short. May she R.I.P.

This one really took me back. I was a sophomore in college and we were discussing the recent death of Harry Chapin, another student remarked something about there being a lot of famous deaths this year. Our professor said it only seemed that way because we were becoming adults and realizing our own mortality. I don't know why, but that really stuck with me. Anyway, another sad but wonderful watch. Thank you.

Ross Martin had a major heart attack in the 1960s, causing him to miss several episodes of "The Wild, Wild West." He was told to be careful with his heart for the rest of his life. On July 3, 1981, he was playing tennis 🎾 on an extremely hot day where the temperature was over 100 degrees!! He had a major heart attack and he died. That’s right Bernard Lee set the tone for future M actors being the first to play the character from Dr No in 1962 until Moonraker in 1979 when couldn’t return for For Your Eyes Only as was set to reprise his role and script was changed out of respect for Lee writing in that M was on leave rather than recast the part for the film.

Omar Bradley was the last 5 star general. Willima Holden was such a good actor, his world weary, cynical and tired characters were always so memorable. Love is A Many Splendired Thing and Sunset Boulevard. Lotte Lenya sang a haunting version of Mack the Knife, an almost nightmarish evocation of Weimar Berlin in the post WWI years when hyper inflation raged and life was surreal before the Nazis came to power. Her portrayal as the knife shoe wielding, latent lesbian Rosa Klebb in From Russia with Love was so good.
