He and Allan Melvin (Sam the butcher on The Brady Bunch) co-starred in the series of Beetle Bailey animated film shorts for King Features and wrote many of the episodes. In 1962, he began working for Hanna Barbera. His his first role for them was the voice of Jet Screamer on The Jetsons. He also originated the voices of Atom Ant, and Mr. Peebles the pet shop owner on The Magilla Gorilla Show, where he would again co-star with Allan Melvin who voiced Magilla. In addition, he voiced Jughead Jones on The Archies animated series for Filmation.

John Vernon didn't play any villain in Dirty Harry, he played the Mayor. Fletcher was the character he played in The Outlaw Josey Wales. Fletcher was tricked into talking his men into giving up to the Union, but was betrayed and they were killed, except one boy and Josey Wales. Wales killed 40+ bluecoats with their own Gatling Gun and escaped with a wounded boy who later saved his life and then died. Fletcher caught up to Wales at the end of the movie, told him the war was over and let him go.
