I just received the news that Shane MacGowan of the Pogues passed away. In this video I would like to talk about his talent, the documentary Julien Temple ‘Crock of Gold’ made about MacGowan and some of the best albums by The Pogues.

Shane was very important to us second generation Irish growing up in the Uk. That love of rural Ireland , a yearning to be there, mixed with the excitement of coming of age in big British cities at a time when the Irish were still mistrusted and disliked. He made us proud to be ourselves. Great video, sir!

Thank you for this. I had a similar background as Shane. Being brought up in England in 1960/70’s of Irish parents was not a friendly place, Shane gave us a voice and a pride in who we were.

Thank you for recognizing Shane MacGowan as the brilliant poet he was. I feel the loss of him as deeply as I have felt the loss of close friends though I have never had the pleasure of meeting him. He is so deeply missed by so many of us.

Thank you for sharing this lovely and touching tribute for the poet and lyrical...magician/mad man that was Shane MacGowan. To give in to the trivial insanity that is cancel culture is to turn away from the full experience of this man's music and deny yourself the keenest insight; the most romantic of troubled souls. I will love him forever for the songs and the sentiment he shared with us all. To lose him and Sinéad within half a year makes the world a quieter (and decidedly more boring) place, but the voices they shared and the souls they bravely bared, will live on. RIP to an absolute genius.

Love this tribute, love Shane & Pogues, and agree “canceling” of Fairytale is ludicrous, those words are OBVIOUSLY used to show how toxic and abusive this relationship was at its worst moments. The song also shows the love & beauty of their best moments, that’s what makes it so brilliant!
@top5records796
@top5records796 10 месяцев назад
I agree! The song paints a picture of a problematic relationship. So the language they use is… obviously a reflection of that.

I admire your passion about Shane’s poetry and music and appreciate your viewpoint. I wish I could sit down and buy you a drink and talk with you in a pub someplace. I am definitely very emotional about Shane’s passing too. He was so fully and unabashedly himself. He will be missed.

Oh, I understand you so well! Fairytale of New York is my favourite christmas song and I'm all about Christmas and today was the day that I could start to listen Christams songs all day long (cos' my family won't mind it as much, cos' it's December) and I just heard the news that Shane died and broke into tears. I still can't stop crying. I always loved The Pogues and Shane, his music plays in the background of my best memories. I'll miss him forever.

I feel the same, here in U.S. they were always more of a cult / underground band but to me they’re epic... I hear that Fairytale Of NY gets played constantly during holiday season in UK & Ireland, I have to tell people I’m born & raised NYC, they never ever play that song here 😕

"One summer evening" is the opening line to a famous Wordsworth poem about time/change/nature. Shane a young London Irish punk sang "one summer evening drunk to hell", he knew his references. " A pair of brown eyes" A song about a drunk punk listening to a WW1/2 veteran in a pub. "So drunk to hell I left the place.....................and he birds were singing in the trees, while the wind was gently laughing"

Great assessment of MacGowan's singular presence and talents. I wasn't sufficiently aware of the range of the man's literary education, though his poetic flair was evident enough. "Fairytale of New York", which I agree is one of the great Christmas songs, is my favorite Pogues track. Had MacGowan lived to see this Christmas, he would have turned sixty-six years.
