Sabater is the son of Nestor Sabater and Teresa Gonzalez of Ponce, Puerto Rico. He grew up in East Harlem, the Spanish Quarter of New York City known as "El Barrio". Like most teenagers in the neighborhood, he played stickball, flew kites, and harmonized the tunes of the popular R&B groups and vocalists of the day such as Nat King Cole.
He was inspired by percussionists such as Willie Bobo, Uba Nieto, Papi Pagani, Monchito Muñoz, and Willie Rodriguez. With encouragement from many of these same drummers who were from "El Barrio", Jimmy practiced playing the timbales, the standing drum kit made world-famous by the great "Rey del Timbal", Maestro Tito Puente. It was during a 1951 stickball game between the Devils and the 112th Street Viceroys that Jimmy's life would turn towards history. A young man named Gilberto Calderon of the Devils met Jimmy, and invited him to a party. The two became fast friends. They had a lot in common. Both wanted to be musicians after being influenced by the music of Machito, Marcelino Guerra, Noro Morales, Tito Puente and Tito Rodriguez. 1954 saw the Joe Panama Sextet as one of Spanish Harlem's most popular music groups. When Panama's Conguero, or conga drummer, left the group, Jimmy recommended his friend Gilberto for the job. Soon after, bandleader Joe Panama fired his sidemen and replaced them with others. The now unemployed musicians which included vocalist Willie Torres and pianist Nick Jimenez formed a group which included bassist Roy Rosa, vibraphonist Tommy Berrios, timbalero Jimmy Sabater, and conguero Gilberto Calderon (who had been selected by the musicians to direct the band).

Man, do I remember the days of the live Latin Bands. I am a 72 year old black woman. My parents were very strict and I use to sneak out to go see and dance to the music of Jimmy Sabater, Joe Cuba and Eddie Palmieri at the Palladium. We would dance all night. Sometimes my parents caught me but I didn't care I had a good time. 😁👏😁👏

RIP JIMMY YOU WERE THE INSPIRATION FOR ME WRITING MY FIRST SONG, A BOLERO CHA ENTITLED "MY DREAM" (IN ENGLISH) WHICH TURNED OUT TO BE MY MOST POPULAR GENRE. IN FACT, FANIA RECORDS GAVE ME A VERY UNUSUAL DEAL. IF I RECORDED 3 BOLERO CHA'S FOR THEM IN EVERY ALBUM, I COULD DO WHATEVER I WANTED TO. ON THE OTHER 9 TUNES ON ALL MY FANIA ALBUMS. BTW IN THOSE DAYS WE USUALLY RECORDED 12 TRACKS. SO MY DEAR DEPARTED FRIEND. I AM FOREVER THANKFUL TO YOU. I'M 84 NOW STILL CAUSING "GOOD TROUBLE". ALTHOUGH WE WERE BOTH BORN IN 1936, IT SEEMS LIKE GOD NEEDED YOUR GREAT TALENTS. SOONER OR LATER I WILL BE WATCHING YOU SING THE CLASSIC THAT WILL ALWAYS BE YOUR SONG ALONE "TO BE WITH YOU" ONCE AGAIN..

Some musicians are really good and can be certainly be diverse in many ways. Jimmy Sabater was one of them; he didn’t really pursue singing alone as a career, but he was the most powerful voice of the Joe Cuba Sextet, no doubt!!! Great music and great group, all start!!! Forever in my mind!!!

Dear Jimmy. I remember you came to my 13th birthday party and sang my favorite song ( To Be With You). I had a crush on you because I loved your sexy voice. You and my dad were awsome musicians. I remember my dad visiting you in Clasin point. I have lots of photos of you & my dad to look back at. 2 years ago he joined you up in heaven. I miss you both whole heartedly. My dearest brother Jimmy....I am heartbroken to find out today that you are no longer with us. Although I have never met you, I want you to know that you have been a major influence to me in my quest to become a singer. Growing up in our household in the 60's & 70's, I loved it when you'd croon your tunes, man...whether it'd be charanga or romantic soul you always knew how to set the mood at a party, or a romantic interlude. Brother Jimmy, THANK YOU from all of us. Long live in our hearts compai
