It really is incredible how they transformed the very odd flashy ill-suited opening number from the 1988 production into this great pop punk teen angst jam. It's barely even recognizable as the same song.
chamberlin high doesn't have a school theme song.... this is just a song about what their life is like... what they worrie and don't worrie about... and how they want to fit IN with life
I totally agree, the song is about everyone feeling insecure, and how they would die then being unpopular (foreshadowing lmao) and when its more individual it kinda takes the point away
This one needs the group involved for most, if not all of it, whereas "Beautiful" from Heathers, a song with basically the same theme of teenage anxiety and fitting in, can break off into individual solos to make the character stand out. The difference is this one is much darker, doesn't get the comic relief of Beautiful, and doesn't focus on background characters so lumping all the teens in together works. It gives a general feeling of anxiety whereas Heathers shows what individuals are dealing with in their minds.
We were just kids trying to do our best. We were kids... Everyone: Stop. Go. Who am I? Move. Ha! Come on, come in. Father, mother, preacher, teacher Failure! Am I? Am I? Am I? (Am I continues in the background) No. Am I? Am I stupid? Am I hopeless? Am I? Violence! Silence! Broken. Used. Black. Bruised. What about me? What about me? I dream! I drown! I wait! Everyday, I just pray. Every move I make is right. Where I go, who I know. Will I be alone on Saturday night? And I worry, what if I stand out one bit? I worry, what can I possibly do to fit in? Perfect clothes. Nose. The perfect skin, face, all ace! Both my folks. Total jokes. All they do it chew my ass! Blah blah blah blah (Random blah's in the background). They should just be glad I make it to class. I don't worry, if I blow my SAT's I worry, what can I possibly do? To squeeze in, pow! Why not now? When will I belong? Look where I am, damn! My whole life feels wrong! What if I do snap? Holy crap! I'd crawl out of my skin! And so would you, 'cuz life just doesn't begin. Until your in. Gardener: Don't you all have somewhere to be? Billy: There's somewhere i'd like to be Miss G. Gardener: What are you Mr. Nolean, 12? Tommy Ross, watch those hands and definitely no tongue! Tommy: Yes ma'am! Chris: Hey you two, get a room! Gardener: And you Chris Hargensen, get rid of that gum before glass Chris: Where should I put it Miss Gardener? Gardener: Anywhere you like, just get it out of your mouth. Carrie White get a move on, gym class in two minutes! Boys: Hah. Hah. God, it's rough. Stayin' tough. Wonderin' what the world will say. "Make a plan!" "Be a man!". All this frickin' bullshit gets in the way! Girls: I go crazy, nobody cares what it does to me Everyone: And it's crazy! I would go out of my mind. To be in, shit! In is it! What comes close to that? Until you've been, in, you ain't where it's at. Cuz when you're out, well, life is Hell. You can never win. There's no doubt, that life just doesn't begin. Until you're (Carrie drops the ball) Everyone: Aaaaaw! Norma: Way to go, Carrie! Frieda: Yeah, way to blow the game! Sue: Hey watch where you're going! Chris: Loser! Gardener: Hit the showers girls, go change up! Carrie: Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Amen! Girls: And someday, if I don't stand out one bit Everybody: Oh someday, I may be normal enough Boys: To fit Girls: To fit in Everyone Geez, shoot me please! Put me out of my pain! Am I a mess? Yes! Totally insane! If I am not missed, I don't exist, that's the greatest sin! I'd rather be shot! 'Cuz, life just doesn't begin. Doesn't begin. Doesn't begin. Doesn't begin. Until you're in!
At the end. Chris, Billy, Norma: To fit in Wo-oh-ah-oh Ohh Yes yes No-oh-ohoh-oh Am I am I The greatest sin I'd rather be shot! Cause Life just doesn't begin...
I think the new lyrics were meant to focus on all of the things teens struggle with... The first verse still deals with appearance... Then you have the struggles of parents and school... And the final verse is really just the literal desire to fit in, whatever it takes to do that As far as a song that only focuses on the more shallow struggles... I actually preferred Ain't It a Bitch from the 1984 workshop, which 'In' later replaced But I love this version of In xD
What I love about this song is that it really gives you insight into the kids, and how they were all going through their own shit. Doesnt excuse what happened to Carrie but I think it ups the sympathy for them. Except for Chris, she's evil
I think Chris is an excellent example of the prospect of the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Based on the book as well as the musical as alluded to in the song "the world according to Chris" her family life is pretty diluted by a step on others backs to get what you want mentality, so is she really evil or a product of her own environment? This is why I absolutely love the story Mr. King wrote as well as this show, taking "don't judge a book by it's cover " as cannon!!
I came across this musical by accident and found out how it flopped......I listen to this song on my ipod everyday.....and world according to chris, the destruction, dreamer in disuse and epilogue......they were just the few that I downloaded but I consider these songs really awesome!! I love people who take trash and turn it into treasure....mind you I do love trash....but these guys gave it some dignity.....Its amazing how different it is from the original
the 1988 musical flopped, the 2012 revival actually did quite well. The songs from the 1988 version are either lyrically different or do not exist in this version of the show. What is interesting it's the same composer and lyricist of the 988 version.
I was there for a Thespian Festival when it was in Tampa. Heard four groups do this exact same song before they opened the doors. And one of them from my old high school.
***** yeah my school did it as small group and it was amazing but the large group musicals that did it were okay, some didnt have many harmonies involved only good choreography
This entire show got me through a really hard time in my life when my partners were divorcing and I had to watch our family die. This show awkwardly gave me comfort and satisfaction.
The full dialogue for the beginning of this, if anyone wants it [VOICE 1] Name, please. State your full name. [SUE] You already know my name. It's Sue. Susan Snell. [VOICE 2] And you were born in the town of? [SUE] Chamberlin, Maine. I was born and raised there. [VOICE 1] When did you first meet Carrie White? [SUE] In grammar school. Carrie and I were in the same grade. I don't think I said a hundred words to her before this all began. Would you turn that thing down?! I can't see! [VOICE 2] Tell us about the night of May 28th. About the occurrences that led up to the alleged event. [SUE] 'Alleged event?' Look, why do you keep asking me the same thing over and over again? You want to catch me in a lie, is that it? [VOICE 1] We need the truth. [SUE] I already told you what I know! How many times do we need to go through this? [VOICE 1] Until it makes sense. [VOICE 2] Until we understand. [SUE] Well, what you need to understand is that we were just kids. (music starts) Kids! Trying to do our best... we were just kids. (singing begins)
marjoleintje1993 ann marie millazzo is the vocal arranger of both these shows and next to normal! aka she arranges the harmonies and who sings what lol
Oh, don't get me wrong! I still love the song...it's just IDK. Carrie as a novel focused more on the whole 'shallow' thing, you know? But it does give more sympathy for the teens so I applaud. The destruction though...I prefer the original :P
I think you're talking about the microphones. Usually they are positioned at the top of the forehead with the cord running through their hair and down their back to the battery pack.
Sorry, I just screamed cuz I saw Andy Mientus and thought it was worth to just say that for a reason I can’t name because I don’t actually know said reason, so. Nvm
We covered this song as part of our singing tech unit! It was a LOT of fun to perform. Definitely our favourite song from Carrie the Musical. If you have time on your hands then check it out ;) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q0hbUxY2ols.html
random question, I've been seeing this a lot now. But what is sticking out of top of the girls' foreheads? Lately I've seen it with actresses wearing wigs, but these girls look like it's their natural hair. I mean wouldn't you want that covered when performing?
