I found Jim several years back and loved the fact he didn’t use a lot of fertilizer, just leaves and wood chips which is how I’ve been gardening for over 25 years and that has improved our soil 10 fold. We’re in zone 5, Michigan and he has tons of great gardening advice even for us.

Of all the brilliant and helpful takeaways from this video, for me, the one that resonated the most was the idea of incorporating movement in landscape design which led me to understand why I gravitate toward some gardens more than others. Thank you so much… really appreciate your knowledge and advice.

Well that was fun. One thing I will add more of after watching this..... Movement. Plants that sway in the breeze. I often wondered why I liked one section of my garden more than all the others is the movement. I need to focus on that in more areas. Movement makes the garden feel Alive. Thank you Erin. Thank you Jim.

Love, love, love these two - so knowledgeable and interesting. My takeaway: movement in the garden is important and also... everything shouldn't be seen from the street - keep something a surprise. Love it. Oh, and the fact that it doesn't have to be over complicated.. Please get together again - next year?

She’s clearly a journalist 💁‍♀️ Great info, especially about applying broad principles across growing zones. And I love Jim’s takeaway…I wondered if he had any grasses. Anymore there are some beautiful ones out there that stay pretty tight and upright and some cute little guys too. I’ve been adding more myself and it does make a difference! Not just during the growing season but during winter as well.

Great interview! Your questions about learning from other gardens and zones were great. While I love chat that gets into the (only!) proverbial weeds, mile-high stuff really gets me excited to jump into my own garden. Now off to find ways to incorporate more movement and rooms!

ALL garden areas are more maintenance than a lawn has to be. I only mow mine. Whatever grows in it, grows. I quite enjoy mowing with my lawn tractor and often wish the grass would grow faster than it does. I do not water the yard but plants in garden areas MUST be watered in times of drought. I do not weed the lawn but at some point all garden areas need attention. Yards also give you a sense of space where you CAN wander, run and play without issue. It certainly is not my lawn that that needs daily attention in the summer heat. More garden areas to maintain would NOT be a good thing.

I've gardened in several zones, originally from 4b and now in 9a (S. Houston). What I have really noticed that makes a difference is the night time temperatures and humidity. The USDA should really create a heat zone number that is ubiquitous... Cause your plant might not make it through the summer to survive the winter 🤣
@synapticburst

Hi Erin - love your channel and have been learning from you for over a year since I found you. Delighted to see you talking to the excellent Jim Puttnam! Totally agree with what you said about people in different zones learning from each other. For example, I garden in zone 9 USDA, but actually I'm in Ireland so our climate is not typical zone 9. We have a much less hot climate. Temperate oceanic better describes our weather. Regardless of climactic difference, I have learned so much from your excellent channel and also from Jim's. There are many overlaps between us all and perhaps we can all teach each other about what might be possible in our zones. I find your explanations of things so very helpful as a relative novice myself. Please keep making your excellent and super enjoyable videos! Very best wishes from East Ireland 🌸

I agree with earlier comments: you are a great interviewer with engaging questions, Erin. The visual representation of the design principle (use curves) in your garden was stunning. The beautiful curving lawn with perennial and bulb borders is absolutely gorgeous. I have lived in zone 7a, 9a and now 8b, and I have applied these ideas and principles in every garden. The hardest thing is when I can’t sustain plants that I fell in love with in zone 7 because of the heat index where I currently live! Love this channel and can’t wait to see you exceed 100k!

I am glad I stumbled on your channel. I'm from NE Illinois less than 5 miles from Great America and Zone 5B is kind of hard for a novice gardener like me due to shortened season, extreme temps and mostly lack of knowledge/experience. I'm also very impatient so I feel that at least somebody from my neck of the woods is able to do it and be succesful gardening. Thank you.
