Do my ears deceive me or did that lady criticise Socrates at 32:35 for not being a good husband!? Great guy this Socrates, but really he should have helped out more with the housework.
that was one of her weaker points, but the format of this programme does lead to off-topicness and comparisons to typical BBC Radio 4 listeners....it's a good show, but always important to remember that
I think it was a perfectly fair point, and Socrates' behaviour was not about just not doing the washing up. Socrates had plenty to say about ethics so it's only fair to look at his own behaviour.
minor point, but can you imagine a husband that spends all his time discussing philosophical issues, roams the city- marketplace all day just talking & jabbering philosophy & without bathing half the time, goes to all-night dining debates, and doesn't work for a living? Guess he couldn't even afford shoes. Then, he leaves his wife a widow, probably with kids or grandkids, relying on his rich aristocratic friends perhaps for support financially, but would rather die with his buddies around him? but then, many geniuses had wives & families, lol
He was a bit mean to and about her, describing her as very ugly and fierce. This couldn’t have been true because as you know, all women are lovely and not at all annoying.
