Photographing the wildflowers and rugged coastline of Soberanes Point in Big Sur, California presented challenges. Winds were high during my visit. I wanted to crisply capture the wildflowers in the foreground, while having a little softness in the ocean and sky in the background. A single exposure could not capture that look.
In today’s video, I show you how I blend two photos together to get the look I’m after. With a little light masking in ON1 Photo RAW, I combine the crisp foreground from one frame with the soft background of another to get my final image.

Hey Scott, I don't use On1 so I am not sure about the options, but I do this type of blending in PS often. I take the images into PS as Smart Objects for one REALLY big reason: RAW. Each layer stays connected to the LR raw image and I can jump into camera raw even after I mask for fine-tuning. Also, shift-dragging one layer on top of the other aligns them. I hope Adobe adds Open as Smart Object layers as they do with pixel layers. Of course, the strong masking options in PS are hard to beat.

Hi Ron... the concept of RAW blending is coming soon in Photo RAW 2019. I’m pretty sure Luminar offers a similar function. It would certainly be useful for LR to get that type of feature as well.

It would take a miracle product for me to switch from PSCC for advanced creative post-processing. The masking in PS is so powerful and always improving. You should check out content-aware fill. It has been good, but the PS update just released has greatly improved it. I do use some 3rd party filters like Luminar & Topaz, but only within PS as a Smart Object and only for some of the quick and easy effects not the detailed work like layers, masking, blending, etc. I am not sure that Adobe LR will offer layers and layer masking as LR is so tightly integrated with PS already. I just hope Adobe keeps updating PSCC & LR Classic CC as the big money is in consumer apps, not professional software. I used NIK heavily before Google acquired them to get Snapseed. Google never updated Nik's Pro tools and they faded into the night. DXO has acquired NIK to bring back up to date, but they have gone BR. Skylum "Macphun" is my go-to replacement for NIK, but again only for the easy one-click effects.

Ron, you should go back and reconnect with NIK. DXO is out of bankruptcy, they were only there to shed the camera business. The software business was not an issue.

I think I will download their 30-day trial and see. I am pretty happy with Skylum, but I do miss Nik's U-Point technology and haven't seen anyone offer anything even close to it. I have had on1 for a long time and kept paying for the updates, but I never got the hang of using it. It just never worked for me and I finally uninstalled it this year. I am PS first and then if a plug-in tool can add a bit of efficiency then I am all for it. I just see no need to go after any stand-alone photo software as my workflow has been LR&PS for a very long time. @@alvinlavoie4074
