Here is a tribute video I did for Ed shortly after he passed in August, 2018. Ed was a friend. One of a kind. SO quirky and funny. Since we connected in 2015, he was a great resource of music and laughter for me.
In this video, I'm including the original tribute video I did, breaking down MCA as well as some clips of some of our antics while visiting with him at his house in Nashville.
Thank you, Ed!

Eds playing was mind blowing for me. His choice of phrasing and notes and bends were like . Damm ! What did I just hear? !
@japhygoldman8856

I loved how he would slide up and down the neck to finish a phrase or a note in the phrase an octave lower or higher, it brings so much emotion and feel to his playing and keeps the listener from getting bored. How good were his solos that you could listen to them countless times and still be excited and still learn things from them?

Ed wasn't a shredder, speed picker, or flashy trick player, Ed was "Ed" and he was very different than most, very hard to follow his licks, he incorporated a certain feel in his playing that just can't be replicated, sweet home Alabama is a good example, most of us know the correct cord shapes and notes but we CANT get the same feel for that tune as Ed could. Thank u for this vid you're a great player and Ed king is deeply missed...

I LOVE this video Scott, for many reasons...dig the way you're pickin out Ed's parts so sweet and accurate and with such passion...but I ESPECIALLY agree with what you say towards the end about Skynyrds guitar parts being so nuanced and discovering those things many years after first dissection...it's like the gift that keeps on giving. Ed's playing was more than slinky...HE CHOKED THE LIFE OUT OF THE DAMN GUITAR AND MADE IT BEND TO HIS WILL!!! Lol....Shit I miss that man and his unique approach to playing his instrument....what a great tribute to a great man.

Man, what an awesome Ed King/Skynyrd tutorial to stumble onto. ( I bookmarked this one. ) At 59 yrs old, I was ( retired from the club scene here in east/central Florida in 2002 ) a lifelong guitarist/singer ( lead & harmony )/blues harp/stage performer for a couple decades, but started playing guitar at age 13. I can tell everyone that THIS song is FAR more difficult than it seems. ( This also holds true for many other Skynyrd tunes IF ya wanna nail them note for note. ) I learned an awful lot from this video, thank you. We used to gig this song, but we had to settle with improvising much of the tune due to the extreme difficulty of picking out those nuances in the original. The crowds always thought we did a great job with it......but I knew better, lol. Not only was Ed King a unique & VERY slick guitarist, I think much of the difficulty lies in the fact there were 3 guitarists, all playing different parts. It's weird how you can hear all the guitars, but try singling out those nuances that really make each part........MUCH easier said than done. By the way: we called those "pinch harmonics".......where ya choke up on the pick & squeeze it. It causes the edge of the meat of your thumb to barely come in contact with the string a millisecond after the pick, resulting in the harmonic note. For you beginners, with a little practice, pinch harmonics are very easy to do on demand. That's what's so cool about pinch harmonics, you can nail one any time ya want. THANKS AGAIN FOR THIS ESSENTIAL ED KING LESSON!!! R.I.P. Ed King.........we will never forget you & your great music with Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I feel ya Brother! Watch and/or listen to any of the performances of "Working For MCA" AFTER Ed King had quit the band. When it came time to play those solo, they couldn't do it. They may have avoided performing that song LIVE altogether. Because for a short period after Ed left, Gary & Allen were the only 2 guitarists and toured that way. They couldn't even come close to replicating the solo's that Ed King wrote & performed in Working For MCA........they couldn't even replicate Ed's amazing solo in Sweet Home Alabama. Then Steve Gaines joined the band. Now, Steve Gaines was without a doubt the most talented guitarist to have ever worked in Skynyrd ( he sang very well too, and had already written many great songs ), even better than Ed King.......but not even Steve Gaines could replicate the solo's that Ed King wrote & performed in both Sweet Home Alabama and especially Working for MCA. THAT is how truly difficult & slick Ed King's guitar parts were!!! Those songs performed LIVE by the band after Ed had left simply didn't sound right when it came time to play the guitar solo's.......they actually sound kind of weird. So don't feel bad my friend, because Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, and not even Steve Gaines could play those parts even remotely properly either, LOL!!!@@garyclements318

Scott, thanks so much for that. Ed very much under appreciated even by Skynyrd fans. IMHO the band had 2 geniuses - Ronnie and Ed.

Thank You Scott for your love of Skynyrd and the insight to really explore how complex their music really is! Just discovered your posts and subscribed! Saw APB last year, and you and Artimus just blew me away! You guys are incredible, and really do Ed’s work solid Justice. Like most beginner guitar players ( especially old guys like me ) ‘my fingers just don’t wanna do that cool stuff’… LOL! Just amazing stuff to try and learn. Thanks again, and rock on! ❤️🎸
