@@endlessorbaggins8223 The "who argued best" pole is feedback for the content creators, because the point of the series isn't just to talk about controversial stuff and see how many people think the same way we do, but to really get into the rational of both sides of the issue, reconsider our own position, maybe learn a thing or two, and in the end at least have a more informed opinion than before. And the best way to do that is to provide as compelling an argument as possible for both sides of the issue, regardless of what you think. It's like playing devil's advocate.

Endlessor Baggins It’s a debate show the whole premise of debate is to give the point to the person who debated best and trying to avoid bias. Often times in debate you can find yourself arguing for something you don’t agree with but it’s about the exercise not to create some end result.
@madeofmandrake1748

I would think that, more specifically, they should poll peoples initial opinions on the subject, then poll them again after the arguments have been shown. That way you would see exactly who displayed a more compelling argument.

On the multiplayer in magic arena issue, more specifically on the passing priority in a game with multiple players, you could simply have a toggle button to allow the game to automatically pass priority (assuming you don't have any cards that could be use as a response). A voice chat could also be implemented to speak freely to the other players in the game and a specific key that you could press to talk to your teammate if you are in two-headed giant type of game. Switching from one board to another isn't very a problem, using the arrow keys you could simply go around the field (either your camera would move freely on the game area or the table could turn to fit the player perspective) or a full view of the field that you can zoom in, like watching and episode of gameknights.
@nyft3352
@nyft3352 5 лет назад
I support the pass priority button, its easy to imagine. I dont really support the voice chat system, but i do support a text chat idea. If a group wants to voice chat there are a lot of tools for that, and the lack of a voice chat in Arena should make it less complex.
@wolfsritter8151
@wolfsritter8151 5 лет назад
@@nyft3352 actually by implementing multiplayer and having the game hosting multiple players at the same time would make the game "bigger" (to put it in simple terms) and harder to run (compared to this version of arena) so running arena and a voice chat program could be problematic for people with more basic computers. Remember some of the good points for online magic systems is that it makes magic accessible to players who either can't go to an Lgs or afford the cards to play paper magic, I'm assuming if you can't afford cards you probably can't afford a top notch computer either or you can only get a basic gaming computer.
@nyft3352
@nyft3352 5 лет назад
@@wolfsritter8151 I understand what you're saying and partially agree, the game would be a heavier process for a pc and therefore using another program (i.e Discord) would be more stressful for a computer. Also someone w/o the money for cards couldnt afford a high end pc. But, there are 4 things to point out about this: 1. Sometimes, people can (or could) afford a nice computer but not the cards (in my own experience, i built a mid-to-low end pc that can run mostly any game oh high or mid settings with Discord on) 2. Magic Arena is not a really heavy program and most normal pc's of people i know can run it with discord on (also a few tabs of google chrome). Adding a multiplayer system would make the game heavier but i dont think it could be to the point where its the only thing you could be running. It's all about optimization. 3. Keep it simple, the more you add to a game, the more complex and convoluted it becomes. Magic as a game is already complex and sometimes confusing, but ill keep the point on the client. If devs add voice chat, not only the client becomes more heavy for a pc (albeit just a bit), the GUI would need more stuff going on and the player could get confused and overwhelmed by the amount of stuff at its glance. 4. Perhaps Arena devs arent expericed with VoIP chat and it could be problematic (Just like LoL adding voice chat, its a mess and nobody i know uses it), instead of adding a voice chat to arena (first they would need to add friends list, text chat and so more) let the pros of the field do their thing (again, discord as an example). It's better to use an optimized VoIP system in parallel with arena than making one out of nowhere that could be a total mess. Hope you get my point.

The simplest MTGA 3+ multiplayer format is two-headed giant, because cards which state target/each opponent/player or have other complex operations related to the number of players would not require a recode, because the instructions for that card would merely apply the same way to each giant, or be replicated to apply also to the second head's hand/library/graveyard/permanents, which isn't too much to do(I can imagine some ways the code might have been made in which this would take a long time to complete, but...I still want it!). The 2 greatest obstacles to implement practical 3+ multiplayer matches in MTGA are board display(longer games with many tokens and cards are already somewhat tedious to play through given how small the cards and tokens are scaled when there are a huge number of them) and communication among players. My solutions: The easy one: communication: MTGA already has integration for Discord support, which to me makes the path to 3+ multiplayer seem like something that is going to happen - I greatly wish it does, and that it is a success if it is added....or, if necessary, a small chat box, ONLY for communicating between the two heads part of the same giant, though voice chat is better because it will take less time. Consider the crossover streams players could have, which would possibly fit well into the new pro setup that is being done. The greater challenge: board display - there is always, in my experience, more intense carnage in two-headed giant, because there is more activity, and potentially a lot more synergy, happening on the same turn - because of this, board space will probably not be a problem, the only exception being decks which token spam, which can easily be dealt with(in design concept, not program implementation - the sorting and categorization logic would take some time to put together, and may relate to network code modifications...and display modifications, BUT this is already partly done, by stacking instances of tokens, which is great for all those who have a strong desire for 3+ multiplayer :D). Some other required changes to implement two-headed giant: -turn control: the turn mechanism has to do one of two things: process multiple instructions from players simultaneously or have additional pass actions for each giant head in order(probably an arbitrary head 1, then head 2)...even though individual pass actions per head would take longer, that is ok, because it is an easier implementation early on - I point out that MTGA has had multiple speed improvements, where some actions were moved to full control mode so that they are automatically resolved faster most of the time - one example is a large event stack of life gain events which used to occur more slowly and be passed individually, which is now much faster and will pass automatically if you have no response and are not in full control mode - that was an improvement to MTGA made over time, one which I greatly appreciate and would be willing to wait for to have 3+ multiplayer sooner, such as two-headed giant. -handling of concession for one of the two heads: generally, the game would probably still end as soon as one of the heads conceded, but there may be the option of allowing the 2nd head which did not concede to continue playing, but once 1 of the 3 or 4 players concedes, in my opinion, most others will also concede. This is a minor but significant detail. I advise allowing the game to continue until victory or the 2nd head leaves the game...maybe that isn't a good idea...I've played 3+ multiplayer(two-headed giant and else), in which one of the players left the game and took their permanents away from the game before they were defeated, changing the balance of the gameplay situation...it may be best to merely have 1 concession end the match...or leave the permanents of the conceded head in play for the remaining head to control?...Consider that players in this potentially faster digital version of magic do not know each other and thus there is less consequence to conceding when things get tougher. Simplest answer: 1 concession ends the match - less work, sooner 3+ multiplayer. :D -there are still only 2 turns per round. -the turn mechanism needs to be modified to allow passing for each of the 3 or 4 heads, which isn't too complex, depending on how that mechanism has been implemented -there would need to be more highlights shown for what the players' mice are hovering over, likely needing to be color-coded and/or displaying the highlighting player's name near the highlight, probably with an background to differentiate the displayed player name from cards on the board...there could be a card background behind the name, maybe display the avatar and some graphical effect?... -up to 2 more player names would need to be displayed -networking code may need to be modified to send information about the additional actions of the 3rd and 4th heads to each of the clients, and the connection logic per computer to the match would probably also need to be modified* -matchmaking(which should first matchmake two players as heads of a giant, then matchmake two giants for the match) to specifically support 3-4 players may also need to be made* The basic thing for me is fun - the more I can experience in magic, the more fun it is, and 3+ multiplayer allows that, because there are however many more decks changing the experience(the gameplay becomes more variable). I have mostly played 3 player free-for-all with paper magic, and the increasing acceleration of the danger and excitement with every turn is great. MTGA could achieve that same experience...It is not so much a matter of the technical requirements as the people experience. It is the thrill of a roller coaster ride, one in which you never know the end result and which you get to steer the direction things or going...or try to... XD ...I'm not sure which would be better: two-headed giant or 3 player free for all - it breaks down into two aspects, both of which are fun in magic and some are probably enjoyed more or less by different people: 3 player free for all is ruthless, unpredictable, accelerates and becomes more dangerous, and can be casual or competitive, but I think it is best when done competitively...while two-headed giant has more of an aspect of cooperation. I suspect that two-headed giant would be most liked by newer players, especially if they could go against a more experienced player together. *netcode might have been made dynamic in advance to support this type of improvement - I do not know

On the last debate topic: Having MTGA not have multiplayer is an advantage to the game overall. In business terms, this is called "product differentiation". Why would you play paper Magic if you could do everything online? If MTGA does everything paper can, more people will not buy paper products anymore, since they can just play it on their laptop. The LGS, the main convergence point of paper players would lose customers and thus, shut down. Social interaction is also better in person, since online, people really show their nasty sides, which could drive away some of the players out. If there is one analogy I could think of, it's the newspaper medium. Yes, digital news is the main way people consume information, but having a physical equivalent comes in handy when the means of access (i.e. internet) is not possible. That's how paper formats survive today.

What a surprise to see a new In Response! It's been so long! I was also surprised to see The Prof not going over his time...but then he went over his time. Also, did anyone catch his eye roll at Jimmy saying he was gonna be Utilitarian on one issue? I wonder where Prof lies on that issue. Touching on the topics...Topic 1: Having a Pro League where the pros can actually get paid and supported well is great, but the vagueness on how to even get in is a problem. They need a concrete and clearly defined way of making it there and they need to pick a direction to focus in. Topic 2: Leaning more with Jimmy on this one, and surprised others aren't based on the poll. Structure and rules are an inherent part of games. These things are necessary. Having a ban list for collectable games where things can get broken and awful is just necessary. It's strange. In other games when OP things and strategies emerge, people call for nerfs and those nerfs usually lead to healthier environments. In Magic we can't nerf because of logistics, but we can ban, and banning also tends to lead to healthier environments so I'm bewildered by the response people have to it. Granted, banning and nerfing isn't exactly the same. Topic 3: I think the fact that both debaters said that Magic should balance tabletop and digital should be a hint that I think that the question of "Should Magic go all in on digital with Arena" is flawed. Magic is almost certainly not going to abandon the tabletop aspect of playing. That's where it started and that's its heart and soul. I'm not going to do any "0 or 100%" style thinking errors here because they could abandon it if they really wanted to, but it most likely won't happen. The digital side is important, but they aren't getting rid of tabletop. Magic is the only one of the most popular games in the world that isn't purely digital and that's a cool place to be.

This debate......I was on the majority side once, and the minority side twice, but all I heard was 3 guys who love magic, and want to see it grow. Makes me realize how hard it must be to work at Wizards. Constantly battling between multiple sets and classes of players and doing right by all of them. All in all, I'm happy with the game and the direction it has taken. All nit-picks aside. Great job guys! I loved it!

Its the opposite to me. Its why i prefer MTGA with plugins that let me hover over cards and look at them as i want for however long i want. And it gets rid of the cheating that paper invites. However i think both can be a boon to eachother ( paper and digital)

Very interesting that Hasbro (which owns Wizards of the Coast) just put out its quarterly earnings, and they stated that the exploding popularity of MTG Arena has not diminished the popularity of paper magic, but caused a large bump in sales of paper magic products. In particular, they attribute it to MTG Arena bringing paper players who have left the format back in

I've personally considered the commander banlist more of a guide as opposed to a set thing, if you want to play a card on the list, ask your playgroup and if they're okay with it then go for it.

I like how the question of having a 200 or more card banlist for commander is brought up as an impossibility and yet the entirety of the silver bordered cards are once again currently banned and those numbers are beyond 200. I also acknowledge just as the rules committee did that not all silver border cards should see play, meddling kids is very broken, and should not have been allowed from my personal play testing where I removed it from my own deck realizing its Own power, but the banlist is actually already well beyond 200 cards. I also bought a whole set of the first conspiracies to use for my first commander deck and found out rather sourly those too were banned.

EDH: The committee is not regulating fun Prof, they are regulating social expectations. They make it so any player at anytime can just say hello to another person and ask to play a game knowing there is a set limit to what can and cannot be done. In your own personal groups the committee says do as you want, but in dealing with anyone outside of that group here is the social expectations and general guidelines to follow. 60 card kitchen table magic plays the same way, at home you do as you want, in public here are the designated formats that are general accepted and the list of cards you can and cannot play with.

I don’t know If I’m the only one. But watching paper magic in tournaments or any form is much more exciting and engaging to me. It’s like the real deal. I’m already over watching a mtg arena stream in 2 min. Paper magic will always be the number 1 in my mind across the board. Even myself in all my years of magic I will never sit down for more than 10min on arena, I rather brows threw my bulk cards and sort them

Whenever I introduce somebody to commander I always tell them this: that there is a banlist and it's good to take a look at it if you get the chance. But you can play whatever you want and most people won't care. But if it makes playing with you unpleasant, people aren't going to want to play with you. The goal is to have fun. Like idc much about awful cards because I'm smokin and drinkin beer and laughing with my friends.

Topic 1 - I agree with Josh that Arena is the way to go in the future and it has to be incorporated in some form or fashion moving forward. It's the natural progression of magic tournaments. However, I feel the Prof presented his argument much better. You can't throw out the old before you have a functioning new form. I don't want to go back to the old and throw out the new, but bring back the old while we're working out the kinks at least!

Wow, I really enjoyed this episode. Seeing this kind of debate was great becaue it let me reflect on my own ideas on how Magic should work. With regard to the debates, I think both Prof and Josh made compelling arguments over the banlist. It's better to not meddle in a social format, but it's also important to create a baseline expectation for players in new groups. The MPL question was a bit tougher. While I am in favor of paper tournaments, I think there's a strong case for Arena as a tournament platform that can supplement paper magic. In the end, though, I honestly don't think Jimmy made a compelling argument in favor of Arena over paper. He mentioned that multiplayer formats like Oathbreaker and Commander were fan-made and right now there's no way to make new formata on Arena, because there's no free play. Additionally, I don't think Mobas are a compelling analogue multiplayer games because each player always has agency in those games, as opposed to magic, where you're often just waiting. And with arena, I worry you'll be waiting more as attention lapses or people alt-tab when it's not their turn. Overall, I think paper and Arena each have a role to play, and choosing one at the expense of the other is folly.

As a returning Magic Player, I love Arena. I don't have enough free time nor patience anymore to searsh through thousand piles of paper cards anymore. Moreover I lost contact with my playing group after High School. I also don't feel like searshing through huge databases and ordering cards online to fill my gaps after more than 15 years without investment. So Arena is perfect for me and I'm so glad it exists. I tried many other CC video games and never found the true fun I had with Magic back then. I would personaly love to see multiplayer experience improved on Arena but I admit it should not be prioritized at all. Online real drafting or 4 to 6 player modes are limited like any other online game by the technique. I would really like to try a game of commander in the near future but, for this goal, I will look for real players to interact with instead. In the end, that's what board games are all about... and no one would found himself afk/linkdead in the middle of an epic game or drafting session. Great debate from my three favourite youtubers !

I think that there should be no legal ban list, with store-specific ban lists. Stores could download ban lists from wizards based on the environment they want to maintain. Easy, so they don't have to spend time figuring out a working ban list. If they choose they can still have player-sanctioned ban lists. It'd just be there to access. Likewise, professional tournaments could also have their own specific stringent ban lists, cuz otherwise it's who gets to untap on turn 3 first...

Not to mention; it’s a collection aspect of magic the gathering. If the server shuts down or even if they decide to come up with something beyond arena; your investment will be stuck in limbo. I am leery of spending real money on digital cards because at some point in time for whatever reason I may not be able to gain access to them

My final point about Topic #3: Even if I wanted to play Commander format, often I find a card that is "Commander legal." Although I only need 1 copy for that format, these cards often did something unique or were integral to the function of an "engine." The downside is they are expensive or more than I can warrant on 1 card.

The problem with focusing on digital vs paper is the limitations. If you look at the top 3 formats in magic, a strong argument would be made for draft, Standard and EDH/Commander. Of the three, how many was created by WotC? Not EDH, and not Draft. Paper Magic needs to exist and maybe even be on the forefront to continue to allow the evolution of magic. In a digital space, you're limited the confines of the program.

I think they could add some features from paper magic coverage to arena tournaments. For example dice instead of numbers for counters and promo cards instead of tokens if you make more than 3 identical tokens. Naturally there would be a "judge hand" that would replace your crummy dice and promo cards to official ones in a minute. Never could figure out how WotC could not provide a rack with tokens and dice for their feature tables. Oh and glossy "sleeves" would be a nice touch to make the board state incomprehensible.

Love the debate series "in response" its Dec 2022 n I feel like we probably need 5-6 more of these episodes to address current mtg situations/events/happenings. Did 30th anniversary sell out (no it didn't btw imo), arena now has commander (haven't played it for exactly the reasons in Josh's answer) what do you guys think of that? We have 2 years worth of C19 restrictions... with that in mind, events, GP's, fnm are starting to come back what are your concerns? What if anything should wotc do to maybe compensate lgs's like an appreciation program or something for holding on to their stores, their love for mtg throughout all of this (many stores closed forever)? What do you guys think of the new historical cards situations in recent sets ie what do you think of strixhaven mystical archive cards? kamigawa neon ink cards? brothers war serialized artifacts/historical artifacts/retro frames? Are the collector packs/boxes good or bad for mtg? Why? They're definitely lowering the costs of singles and eliminating any value in foil commons n uncommons. Personally I'm a big fan of the new chaser cards in these sets mystical archive/neon ink/serialized artifacts (I even like the transformers as im a big fan of the ip especially G1, the shattered glass cards that promote the shattered glass comic that was super good btw). In a previous episode un-sets were a topic n now we have black border unfinity cards/acorn symbols for unplayable unset cards which was advocated for in that episode of "in response." What do you guys all think of wotc recent direction, crazy amount of products being pumped into the market? Loss of sales and revenue for Hasbro after the initial covid boom in sales? And another big debate issue in mtg recently... universes beyond in general, good or bad for the game? I know I personally have heard and seen large scale backlash against the woke version of LOTR's universes beyond as well as Dr who's, stranger things and TWD's representations... however with that being said I summize its just another way to bring fans of other IP's into mtg which makes sense. I'm a big fan of Warhammer 40k and transformers im only missing Megatron, Goldbug (bumblebee in a new frame from the shattered glass comic) Jetfire, Slicer and Prowl n I can't wait to build a 5 color transformers deck under Ramos dragon engine in an attempt to tell a flavorful story about the original G1 cartoon movie vs Unicron. These are the debates we wanna hear today. Give Prof the task of defending 30th anni $1000 for 4 packs of unplayable proxies, and have Josh n Jimmy argue against it... thats what I wanna see. Answer and debate the uncomfortable questions, I'd pay a sub fee for sure patreon package or whatever just to see those sides of an argument debates when you likely don't agree with it either try to defend it if you can, push the envelope.

Counterpoint to most of the Prof's points on number 2: sure, groups can police themselves and settle on a power level as he says in the cooldown question. But what about when I grab my deck and go to a GP (sorry, Magic Fest) or something. Since playgroups can already choose to discard the ban list or rules as they wish, I'd rather have some guidelines for unfamiliar GP situations and let play groups police themselves on group unbans than the other way around. Like Jimmy says, I don't want the rules committee to go hog-wild and ban thousands of cards. But stuff that rarely lead to fun gameplay, like Iona, I don't mind having it go beyond the social contract and onto an official banlist.

Here's the thing. If Arena stays in the Standard realm, which is where I think it SHOULD stay, then it will NEVER replace paper, simply due to the fact that there's formats that uses older cards, such as commander. However, the upcoming release of Brawl should be interesting.

A little thought for maybe how they could deal with passing priority in multiplayer for MTGA: They could use a similar system to the old Duel of the Planeswalkers games, where there is a predetermined amount of time after an action, which anyone can jump into. On the flip-side, if everyone anonymously passes priority, it just ends the wait time immediately. Multiplayer will be slower than just two players, that's a given. But I think this could be a big way to streamline the process!

There is a point to be made against the viability of casual formats on Magic Arena: The pressure buildup to keep winning competitive games builds up so players can get enough resources to get cards (even more so with the doubled cost for historic). A casual format probably shouldn't have a ladder in the first place, so then there would be no rewards, so I think players would feel pressured to play any other format because the game rewards them for doing so. If you reward the daily quests on a casual format, it might be the case that people go to those games with decks designed to do the daily quests and then quit because there is no penalty for quitting instead of playing to have a nice good play. Another point against a casual format is that if you don't know who you'll be playing against you don't really have the chance to self-police and play a balanced match with decks that may not be truly competitive but would be fun to play. The other option would be to make Commander into a competitive format, but that would change the format a lot.

I love this. I don’t agree that Prof was “owning these guys” like everyone here else seems to be, because he seems way too worried about paper magic going away. It’s an irrational fear that I hear people complain about a lot, but only people that own copies of dual lands and stuff. Like chill. The crazy influx of new players is only going to provide more demand for our beloved fetchlands. Your collection seems safe!. But hot damn was that some quality content. Looking at Topic 3, and given the success of Arena, I would argue that for people like me, who are "CARD collectors" at heart, I would still rather spend the monthly fee for Arena to buy $10-15 worth of actual cards each month. I enjoy the analog option of sitting around a table with my family or friends, and trying out something new that I've constructed with new cards.

Debate 1: Professor is strong at first, but when he switched to watching, Josh took over. Post discussion was in favour of Prof again. Personal view: Paper all day long. Without the Social interaction, Magic is not the game i learned to love. Debate 2: Prof won this one easily. Personal view: I don't disagree with there being a RC, but i disagree with the poeple in there. It should be a good mix of various playstyles in that group. But its just simply not. Debate 3: Overall this goes to Jimmy Personal view: No digital Allin simply because of the social component. Digital only, Magic would be dead to me :(
