Note that this cooldown-less version wasn't an option until 1.21, hence why it wasn't originally in the video. Cool to note though.
One good reason to still use the nether is that you load fewer chunks while traveling, so it's especially impactful for people with bad PCs or servers with bad performance
Each method has advantages and disadvantages. For me railways are always faster, because I can just sit in a minecart and walk away from my computer until I am at the destination. I don't have to continually walk, swim, boat, or fly.
This is something JetStarfish was bafflingly oblivious to in his recent widely panned "exploration problem" video: there are advantages and disadvantages to each method that extend far beyond the simple stat of movement speed.
i mean there's no 8s portal time anymore, because if you sit in a boat before you go in the portal, it's instant like creative now. i want to see a blue ice track, that goes overworld -> nether -> overworld -> nether with misaligned portals so it warps you as far as possible, would be like going through a wormhole

The thing removing your momentum is probably the minecraft anticheat that resets your speed when you move too much between ticks, removing the vanilla anticheat with carpet mod made my server not reset my momentum at high speeds
Your video got me seriously thinking about dolphin tunnels. I watched Doc build one above ground on Hermitcraft years ago, but it looked so cumbersome I hardly considered actually building one. Your strategy made me see that it could be done with a reasonable effort. Even now, there isn't a similar video explaining how to practically build a dolphin tunnel network.
4:23 another way to get coloured text super easily is to use this symbol: § and then a letter or number after it, then it will give a different colour depending on which letter/number. Also, i makes _italic,_ o is *bold,* r is clear to normal, and k gives the popular “scramble” effect.

Having your own methods of travel is part of the fun. Sure you can just use a nether boat highway like every other server/world, but it makes travel a chore instead of a highlight. On a server a friend and I are playing on I've set up a tram system using minecarts with llamas in a boat. (So, put a llama in a boat, then put the boat in a minecart on rails, the minecart with move on its own!) It's not *fast* but it's as fast as minecarts can get and is just janky enough to really feel Minecraft, and how many people can say they have a llama powered tram system connecting their server? Keep rocking your dolphin tunnels, they're a unique experience and that alone has value.
5:00, If you have an elytra and enough vertical space, you can get back into swimming by just gliding in again. This works especially when you have it like an aquaduct, where the water is waterlogged in slabs.
Probably not why everyone else got it recommended-but I found it because of the new Minecart experiments. It got me thinking about our current fastest ways to travel and remembered the dolphin tunnels being crazy fast.
in latest update riding a boat through the nether portal allows you to go through without cooldown, so a simple system with a boat dispenser and slimeblock launcher, you could enter through portal with already some speed, and then continue to accelerate and then reach top speed through nether then instantly arrive in overworld side once you go through the other side of the portal, which can make it pretty fast

I was thinking of doing a Deep Ocean (one of the 4 types, don't know), Caves-Type World in a specific version, so as Ice is not readily available for me in that Mono-Biome world, the Dolphin Tunnel seems like a cool idea since the Dolphins would be easily accessible.
There was stuff like the Pistonbolt, I forget who is the creator of it, or if even works, but it allowed you to move from point A to point ludicrously fast.
it is widely used on tech servers for two specific reasons: 1. these are programmable, so you can build a hub and a pistonbolt network 2. you can easily take a shit load of resources with you seamlessly (see the last cubicmetre's video on upgraded EoL farm, he transported a 1kk+ items in a blink of an eye)
Thanks for updating us, and i hope you read this comment: i recommend you to download a mod to improve your render distance. A lot of people like Distant Horizons, because it uses LODs and can render a lot farther away than other render distance mods (like 500+ render distance instead of 60), but i personally dont like it because the initial time it takes to build the LODs for the first time is too long on my PC. I personally use Farsight. However, farsight has a lot lower performance on servers in my experience, so maybe if you are on a server, use Bobby instead (i have not tried out Bobby yet - farsight caches loaded chunks, wheras bobby saves them locally). Also, even if you are using bobby or farsight on a server, you cannot see farther than the server's own render distance (an artificial fog blocks your vision), so the mod View Distance Fix removes this fog effect. Also, theres FarPlaneTwo but thats experimental and old i think.
Love the videos, both this and the dolphin tunnel one! Have you considered doing a world tour video at all? The short glimpses that we got from this all look very very cool.
It's definitely one of the most fun active ways to travel, but personally the time required to make it is one of the biggest drawbacks, especially with the minecart buff coming.
I just think setting them up is a major chore without creative mode and even then it's still no cakewalk. You have to take into account the amount of time spent making it vs. the amount of travel you and the other players do, and the likelihood of everyone getting bored and quitting the server
Fair point, maybe not the most efficient but some people may like it for longer gameplays/style/fun factor But I agree, setting them up isn’t the easiest thing
About the speed reset when going too fast: when a chunk loads, entities in that chunk that go faster than 200 blocks/s are stopped. To prevent that, you can build a bunch of chunk loaders near your tunnels to pre-load the chunks. Keep in mind that chunk loaders stop when the server restarts so you would need to either have the player toggle chunk loading on a line every time or have the whole network connected to spawn chunks (permanently loaded chunks)

I think it would be a great idea to use lead a boat while either dolphin tunneling or ice boating, it would be a really cool and funny way to transport a massive amount of items
in an origins server, me and a buddy used to have a merling base and used dolphins like motorcycles. dont underestimate the dolphin speedboost, at one point i was able to get 200-300 blocks per second (because of the origin speed boost)

This might end up being applicable to me in a weird way; on the server where I'm currently playing I'm aiming to make the first actually-fully-submerged underwater base, because swimming under conduit power is fun and somehow not a single person has posted pictures online of an underwater base that isn't just Otoh Gunga. Dolphin tunnels would actually be a rational extension of the long-distance travel components, and make peripheral farms in mildly close biomes a lot more palatable.
Bedrock Dolphin Tunnels are possible, but Riptide Tridents are used instead since Dolphins do not offer Dolphin's Grace. In the rain, Riptide Gliding tends to be faster, but this comes at the risk of splatting the ground too hard or discovering kinetic energy if combined with an elytra. 1x3 tunnels tends to be easier to build for straight paths with air pockets to work with to prevent deaths along the way. You have to slow down since BR is less powerful overall, so at most it'll take a minute and a half to cover a span of 800 ish blocks via Riptiding.
If you are playing Minecraft Forge, dolphins will always drown because they continue to experience “drowning ticks” but are completely frozen in place when you walk a certain distance away.
what would you consider the optimal ranges for this type of transportation? (at what distance between locations would you start considering making something like this, what distances would you start considering looking at something more technical such as ender pearl cannons?) thank you for making videos like these
@@MisielJet Anything under 1000 blocks is probably my cutoff, I’d recommend making a smaller one first just to see how much you wanna grind for it. Otherwise you’re probably better off using blue ice with a seamless portal system
Hey, you said you didn't have bedrock, idk if you knew this but you actually do. Minecraft Java and Bedrock merged a few years ago, so if you have one you also have the other, it'll be on the left side of the minecraft launcher, underneath where it says minecraft for java it should say minecraft for windows. Great video btw, idk if I'd go through the trouble of making a dolphin tunnel, moving all those dolphins sounds like a pain, but if I ever want to go really fast in minecraft, I'll consider it!
Well I'll still stick to my ice boat tracks :P For me they're much easier to build (no dealing with mob transport! and a mob that I rarely even encounter), more convenient (not reliant on specific enchantments) and... just cool, I guess?
You dont actually need a website or commands to create coloured books. Minecraft uses the section sign "§" for the formatting. Format is "§ 0-9 + a - e for colours, (e.i "§6Orange Text") See the wiki for more.
I see this whole discorse as an argument for tech tiers. The easier something is to make, the less speed it gets (ignore elytra). Where as a minecart rail lets you chill at a brisk pace, it takes a while to get to your destination, but it was easy to set up and easy to use. Then you have your ice boats, it require a little more expensive resourses to make and you need some know how about how things works, and you cant just sit and AFK to get to where you are going, but you get there in a good time. Then you get your dolphin tunnel, its faster then those above, but getting it all together take some effort, and you need some infrastructure to keep using it, but it is fast. And then you get your stasis chambers/ender pearl rockets etc.etc.etc. Its instant, but to make and use one you have to be a wizard, and at that point you might as well just glitch in a command block and do ACE to write a TP command. They all have different tiers, both in knowledge and in resources, and to me it feels like its a fair balance between them.
I know this kind of sounds silly but when you make the text on the screen small and the background video blurry, my eyes keep readjusting trying to focus on the video that my brain thinks is out of focus. Might just be a me thing but if you made the text a bit bigger on screen it would make it easier to focus on the text.
So I think adding air pockets every so many blocks at the tops of tunnels and then putting trapdoors under them could solve the issue of potential drownings as well as not making the build look too ugly
Doesn’t work on bedrock because Dolphin‘s Grace doesn’t exist and it’s just a hidden effect that makes you ever so slightly faster and it also doesn’t work on geyser servers (Geyser Plugin that let’s bedrock users join java servers) for the same reason because for some reason Dolphin’s Grace doesn’t give you the speed boost on your bedrock client I assume since the client doesn’t know what that effect is or something idk. Just guessing why it doesn’t work.
@@ExzaktVid On bedrock it’s a hidden effect that isn’t a potion effect that doesn’t work as well as Java‘s dolphins grace. I play on switch too (yes I play on a java server using switch) and I wanted to say something but I forgot.
Dolphin tunnels are SICK. The amount of speed you get with the sheer style points is a 10/10 from me. Best travel method (for that distance) imo. Yeah sure let me hop on the fucking dolphin underground see you in 3 seconds how wicked is that
