Your grandmother's apron is gorgeous, too nice to hide in a basket and I think it is good that you are going to use it. You could always make a copy of it as a future sewing project so that you will preserve the design. I completely get what you felt about sorting your sewing machine problem. I have a similar situation and I'm going to check my bobbin as soon as I can!
Sophia, I admire your Drive and Energy you have so many projects going on plus your full time job, I get tired just watching you do stuff. Your family is soo lucky to have a Mom and Wife like you.😊
Oh my. Anyone who sews has been there. You are a great sewist! I am happy you can get back to sewing. You have answered my messages privately about my life being turned upside down. I have not been able to sew with losing my 2 younger siblings and then my mother.. .all in 9 months. Depression was added to my broken heart , and I know getting back to sewing with help tremendously. With all this,my marriage of 45 years has come to an end. Another devastating, unexpected blow. AND I broke my wrist and just had my total shoulder replacement. I had started buying supplies for purse making and will get back to organizing my sewing room.. AND THEN BEGIN SEWING. I have been watching you for many years .. and love you still! Maybe one day I will start You Tubing. 😊
When I was growing up my parents had seed starts in the basement, the dining room, the kitchen. Wherever we could find a spot they were put there. Don't worry about what anyone says. Life isn't a pinterest board. You are perfectly fine doing whatever you want. The house looks wonderful by they way. Have a great day and week!
Sophia, you give yourself such a hard time. You need to not worry so much about getting to projects, believe me you achieve so much and work really hard. I am so glad you are decluttering those baskets, as they are like you say, just clutter hiders or catch alls which we all procrastinate on sorting. I am thrilled for you that you fixed your sewing machine problem. It is so hard when we are deprived of doing the things we love and that are our stress relief due to minor frustrations beyond our control. I think the blouse you are making is so gorgeous. I can’t wait to see it completed.
Awww, so glad you figured out the problem with your sewing machine! You may want to add two black dots somewhere visible on the sewing machine itself so you remember which machine takes which bobbins. It would also remind you that they ARE different bobbins.
That's it!!! I'm coming over & organizing your sewing table & drawers! SEPARATE THE BOBBINS! Put all the Brother machine bits 'n bobs in the left bank of drawers. Then, the Singer machine items in the right side drawers! B&S! BS! GET IT?!?
Me literally on the edge of my seat... oml I feel you Sophia! I know this feeling too well, when you agonize over what's wrong, and the fix is way too easy, "why didn't I think of that?!" It's not pathetic, you literally figured it out all by yourself! Oh the relief, the joy, the frustration at yourself for not figuring it out sooner lol ohhhhh I KNOW! I know all of it too well 😂
When I was a child my mom had a lost socks basket. When my dad ran out of clean sock, my mother would dump the basket on her bed, and my sister and I would match up socks. There were very few without mates.
Sophia, bravo! The bobbin discovery was brilliant!!! I teach new sewers and this minute problem solving is a game changer for you! I’m so proud of you and I’m not even your teacher! Well done!
Oh Sophia. I am not a fraction as good as you are about de cluttering. I have watched you for almost as many years as you have videos. I remember (unusual for me as I have a bad memory) the last time you bashed on baskets. You said never again. I am an out of sight out of mind gal and that day I made sure I never brought a basket in my home. Love you so much. PS. Dr Kildare is living happily amongst a bevy of Barbie lady’s. Cleaned up, starched with replacement shoes. Thank you for being the matchmaker that United me with my first crush ❤️
I feel for you with your sewing machine problems. It is OK to be emotional about it. I felt the same way when mine was not working and I took it to be looked at and the screw was loose that holds the bobbin case. Simple fix and I cried because I was so happy that it worked! I understand the frustration totally. Love your videos and am so glad you can sew again!
On the bobbins, your Brother machine takes a Class 15 and most likely the Singer takes a Class 15J. The 15J is that micro millimeter taller you were mentioning and it is slightly curved. I have multiple machines and I keep accessories for each machine in a separate drawer. My label maker is my best friend. Also, if your family chews gum, Wrigley’s has a 35 piece pack ( spearmint, double mint, etc) and the plastic container is the perfect size to hold machine needles. It holds about 5 packs, and of course I label the top and side so I can see which ones are in there from any angle.
I know how it feels when you have difficulties with the bobbin tension on your machine. I had that issue during lockdown and it drove me mad. I ended up getting a new machine, when it could just have been something this simple. It's so frustrating, especially when sewing is your happy place
Here's a tip for your bobbins. When you figure out one brand. Put a very thin dot or stripe of finger nail polish on the bobbins of one machine. Never have to guess again.
I totally understand about your emotion when you were troubleshooting what was wrong with your machine. I have a new Longarm machine and am so frustrated with the bobbins that I walked away and haven’t quilted in almost 6 months. It is my dream machine and was so excited to get it but hate to troubleshoot machines. I gotta get over that! I will take inspiration from you and get back in there and get it fixed!!!
Though it was a very long time ago when I was getting to learn a new sewing machine, I did the same thing. I had been sewing on my mom's 1961 White brand machine, a class 15 machine. Then in the mid 1980s I inhrited my grandmother's Singer "red eye" model 66 [manuf. in 1921] class 66 machine. I had to learn by frustration experience about compatiblilies across machines even if they are the same manuf./brand. Then in the 1990s I really wanted a machine with at least a zigzag feature so bought a modern inexpensive Brother portable with zz. Since the 2000s I started to buy and refurb many vintage machines, mostly Singer modell 99s that are 3/4 size and converted to handcrank because they were being donated to villages that not only had no running water but no electricity and their clothing was all from USA mission trips bringing meds and clothes on a random basis. So my donated 1 machine per village kept their clothing in repair, "until" [the church mission couple stationed there also trained villagers to sew and mend]. So I have an entire hose full of various brands of machines with every size of bobbin/accessory you can imagine and have to keep them all straight. That was a challenge in itself but now that I am legally blind it is more than I can maintain. So I am proud of you that you figured out the "bobbin bird's nest" nightmare -- AND SOLVED IT!!
I have two plastic bobbin storage cases that I got at Joann’s. They each hold about 20 bobbins. On one of them I wrote Brother and the other Viking for my two different machines. I used a Sharpie marker. The bobbins look so similar but now I never get them mixed up. Something you might try. I’m glad you figured it out!
I have had great success with winter sowing, you need to do a little research on the topic. Basically you are making mini greenhouses. Pretty sure we are in the same planting zone so I know it would work for you. Good luck.
You are doing so fantastic!! I was wondering why you weren’t working on your blouse! Yeah!! I have a similar story on a malfunctioning machine. My featherweight started messing up. The guru Vicki from my quilt group couldn’t figure it out I brought it home, and there it sat. For 3 months!! Finally decided to contact my repair shop. Yes they would take it and hold until the repairman could look at it. It was July. Her hubby/repairman worked in the summer as communications for the wild fires, and probably couldn’t look at it until Oct or Nov. Oh well at least it would be there for him to work on. I wasn’t going to be using it. So we drove the 3.5 hours to deliver it. The shop owner came out from a back room, where she longarms. Right behind her was a gentleman, could it be? Be still my heart. It was!!! I cautioned him I need the cost of the repair before he did anything because I was on a tight budget, like everyone else. Took him about 5 mins to determine the needle was in backwards!!! Then he adjusted the belt! Asked how much and he said nothing!!! Could have kissed his feet!! They did alright. I dropped $180 on supplies! Lol So I know exactly how you feel. And you didn’t have to travel 7 hrs to solve your problem !! Lol. You rock!!
Sophia I was so happy you figured out your sewing problem(not gonna lie...you made me cry). You are doing such a great job getting all your tasks done and going onto the next. Gardening I am interested in too. TFS. Have a wonderful day! ❤😊
i have two sewing machines and my trick for keeping bobbins seperate is the plastic singer bobbins. now i know if its metal its for my old elna, if its plastic its for my new singer.
Sophia, once you have sorted your bobbins, consider taking a red fine point Sharpie and putting a dot on each side of the bobbins of one of the brands. Being on the sides, the dots won’t come into contact with thread, but will make it easy to identify the difference! Happy sewing!! YOU JUST DID THIS ON THE VIDEO! GREAT MINDS!
I'm into gardening and a few years ago I bought a shop light at Home Depot and use that for the plants. It works great! I have 4 now and no issues with leggy plants. I keep the lights low and raise them a little at a time as the plants grow. This year I bought ratchet hooks to raise the lights and it's so much easier. Can't wait for your gardening videos. BTW my plants are growing in a spare bedroom. LOL
My husband bought me a new Bernini a few months after we were married in 1965. It died last fall! I sobbed for months. I sew everything and thought my works had ended (dramatic I know). I also own a newer Janome and several(yes several) other machines. I just cut out five Levi quilts and started sewing them! Yep a gal needs more than one sewing machine!
I have a Janome 10001. It is older. It’s ok but I would suggest you go to a Bernina dealer and try out a Bernina. Whatever you buy be sure to take their class. I have sewn for over 70 years and learn new things all the time! What diet are you on? I need help!
just throw out the lost socks. save your mental energy. minimal mom did a vid about this. and with brother bobbins, get a sharpie and initial with a B, so if in hurry you will know.
“To me gardening is just like sewing”, (40:13) OMG exactly!!!! That’s why I don’t do either! I absolutely cannot relate to people who love to do either for relaxation????? I was surprised to find out that “tension” was actually something on the sewing machine!😖😂😬🤣😵💫😅 However, that being said, I still have the basic Singer machine that my mom bought me in 1974 when I was 15 years old. (I think it’s cast iron!😂) I decided early on that thrift shopping would save me more money than sewing but second hand clothes always seem to have an open seam that needs to be repaired, so the lady at the Singer store taught me how to make a bobbin and thread the machine. Since that’s all that I know about sewing, I would pick up extra bobbins at yard sales etc. to add to my supply, never realizing that they might not be the right size. Sometimes the seam repair would go quickly and I could escape my onerous task while other times there was MUCH time, crying and frustration). (and eyelashes! - I love that description!) So thank you for this eye opening video, I’m going to check out my bobbin box and may just get to my mending pile! 🎉 And I’m so happy for you too!🙌🏻
Every time you're in the basement, you're looking for someplace to store the cous cous cooker that was grammas. May I suggest you use it as a planter in the garden? Then it could be put to good use.
I believe your singer machine takes class 66 bobbins which is totally different from brothers class 15. I could be wrong. 66 bobbins aren't as wide as 15 bobbins.😊
Why don't you write the name of the machine on the flat surface of the bobbins ,if you find that you are correct in assuming you put the wrong one in the wrong machine.
If you’re going to eventually move that whole Etsy shelf from your laundry room to where the oil tank is, it may become the perfect spot for all of the vacuum cleaners. You and your guys might be more apt to putting them back if it was a straight shot into the laundry room instead of winding around to the boiler room. (I know that I would.)🫣 (You already keep the cordless ones in there?) You could also put up a shelf to the left of the dryer and put all your cleaning supplies and rags there. It could be the Domestic Goddess domain!😂🤣😅. I’m not creative like you but maintain pretty good organizational structures because “like with like” is my mantra!🙌🏻
I inherited my mother’s sewing machine made in 1944. It sews through 6 layers of canvas like nothing! Made for the war effort. Will go through 8 layers of denim so easily!
Another enjoyable video, thank you Sophia. I was very relieved with you when you solved the bobbin issue 💪💪🙌 Not being able to do the things that make you happy, for whatever reason, can be incredibly hindering; I'm so happy for you that you worked the issue out.
I wasn’t able to comment on the video of your sons room remodel. Great job! Just one thought is to ask him to switch the clip light on the loft bed every couple days. My son was diagnosed suddenly with scoliosis and after extremely detailed history by the physical therapist they figured out that he was always lying on the same side to read in his loft bed with the clip light. It resolved when he would clip it to the other side and even out when reading!
Hi Sophia! Ofc you should use stuff like grandmas apron. It´s such a pity with beautiful useful things that ends up in cupboards and drawers and never get used. The net bag for socks, perhaps it needs a hook on the wall and be visible to get used. All those single socks, you can play "sock memory" with the family. 😆You do know what happens to socks that goes lost in the laundry? They evolve to single tupperware lids and creap in to the kitchen and lives there... 😂 Three sewing machines might be handy, or perhaps two, if one sews alot My mom used to have eight (8) 🙃 , most of them industrial, including two Overlocks, one Coverlock and one special heavy duty for leather and thick layers of denim. Now she only have four, I think. She has a studio and is "semi professional" as an 74 yo educated tailor . I only have one machine, a basic sturdy Husqvarna tho I don´t sew that often or advanced. So glad your "thred-nest" problem is solved and you are not pathetic...
As a sewist of almost 50 yrs I can soooo feel your frustration AND relief for solving the sewing machine problem!! ❤️❤️🥳🥳🥳🥳Happy sewing of all the things now that it's working!!!
Save the tie for Willie to wear for his graduation? My two sisters and I all wore the same dress for our high school graduation. It was a yellow sundress that I think my eldest sister made.
I only have one machine and have had tension issues that would frustrate me to no end. One time it was because the sewing needle was inserted backwards...even though it's designed so you can only insert it one way. I found a way though! I'm glad you have it figured out. I'd probably keep an empty bobbin of each as a reference with a clear tag on it. A small dot would have me trying to remember which machine has the dot!
Wait… what?!! There are different kinds of bobbins for different brands of machines? 🤯 I’ve been having that same problem for YEARS, and I thought I was just bad at sewing! The tension adjustments never fixed the issue, so I thought it was just me! Thank you SO much for sharing! I’m going to try the switch tonight! 😊
Sophia do you have your sewing machine booklets? May have pics of the bobbins in there. Keep them separated in a small box. Haha I didn’t even know you were gonna say the box comment until I kept watching. I am so happy for you. You are super amazing.
Guinea pig poo or worm castings are great for soil improver in gardens and veggie gardens, someone near your location probably has a lot of guinea pig poo they would love to give you. I have also heard great things about banana peel tea, probably smells foul haha. Thinking of your little seedlings🤞 That blouse is so pretty. 😍
Organizing my sewing area always makes me feel so accomplished! I recently got rid of every last bent pin! Sharpened all my needles and got all my thread stopped on the spools. Looks so much better and ready to go!
After you’ve been sewing a while you’ll get used to what yo check when your machine is not working well. A lot of the times it is a bobbin problem. The bobbin might be in backwards, there might be a thread sticking out of the bobbin, or a loose tiny thread or lint in the bobbin receptacle. Sometimes it’s the main thread coming out of a guide. I’m glad you finally figured it out 🎉
Pinks and reds are really your colours, you look great, maybe I said it before but I was watching you as a kid, now I started sewing, decluttering my own house etc. Everytime I organize my linen closet, I remember your videos❤
I had the same problem mixing my bobbins on my brother and singer so I took a apie and put an s on my singer bobbins and a b on my brother bobbins so I could instantly see which one I have. My sewing is my therapy and sanity
