In the 1890s, Grace-Victoria Burnham (Amber Heard) is a pioneering psychiatrist during a time when psychology was not yet a respected science. She travels from New York to the Marquez Ranch in the Columbian highlands to treat an 11-year-old boy named Martin - a prodigy of music, science and learning who also seems to have inexplicable abilities. She begins treating the child, but in doing so ignites a war of science versus religion with the local priest, who believes that the boy is possessed by the Devil and is the reason for all of the village's woes.
