CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Gillespie (Rod Steiger) and Virgil (Sidney Poitier) bond while drinking.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The winner of the 1967 Oscar for Best Picture (as well as four other Oscars), In the Heat of the Night is set in a small Mississippi town where an unusual murder has been committed. Rod Steiger plays sheriff Bill Gillespie, a good lawman despite his racial prejudices. When Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier), a well-dressed northern African-American, comes to town, Gillespie instinctively puts him under arrest as a murder suspect. Tibbs reveals himself to be a Philadelphia police detective; after he and Gillespie come to a grudging understanding of one another, Tibbs offers to help in Gillespie's investigation. As the case progresses, both Gillespie and Tibbs betray a tendency to jump to culture-dictated conclusions. Still, the case is solved thanks to the informal teamwork of the two law officers. Based on the novel by John Ball, In the Heat of the Night inspired two sequels, both starring Poiter as Virgil Tibbs. In 1987, a TV series version of In the Heat of the Night appeared, with Carroll O'Connor as Gillespie and Howard Rollins as Tibbs.

Just one of several scenes in this movie that got Steiger the Oscar. "Don't you get just a little lonely?" Stirling Siliphant's script cuts like a knife but a lot of this scene was improvised by Steiger and Poitier.Apparently, it was raining so hard they couldn't film the scene due to the noise. So Jewison sat in a car with the two leads and made up the scene. Remarkable.

The lot of the common man and women has not been a happy one for a long time, whatever colour of skin they posses. This is also true, when an individual moves into an area which is not of his birth, and often not of his parents birth either. Being of a different religion, or skin colour only serves to exasperate this difficult situation. This is particularly the case in Rural areas, such as much of the USA, but does indeed happen all over the world, in my experience, with no exceptions. Even the most tolerant and sensitive white weaterner would quickly find, if they attempt to settle in another part of the world, and in many cases simply by moving to an adjacent district. When I stay in my wives country of Mauritius, the level of racism is subtle, and I am of course outwardly treated with respect, but it is as clear as day, that I am never treated as a normal member of the family, and certainly not a Mauritian. I am naturally regarded as an outsider, with all levels of racially, culturally, and religiously motivated assumptions, which no amount of talk on my part, in any way changes. I don't complain, as I perfectly understand why they do this, as I hope that everyone in a similar situation, also would. The point I am making with regards to this film, is to remind people that the problems Tibbs finds himself confronting are NOT, purely because of the colour of his skin, as he would be having to deal with many of them, if he was simply a white police officer from a different state, or even a different town.

Great movies were made with subtle dialogue so you could experience it, and they were not over sexualized either straight or gay. The difference in a quality movie from then to the moronic garbage that passes as entertainment today is vast. The new world order wants you to bow to them and keep over simplified entertainment as a pathetic standard. To make sure you don't question the underlying authority of secret societies to tell you who you are. Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger are showing you how to think for yourself and that reeducation (as Steiger experiences through Poitiers' character) is truly possible. And no computers or cell phones to clutter up thinking.

Susan Jones I didn't get any sexual overtones from this film. Two men just trying to solve a murder.

It's the difference between a tomato and a candy bar. Tomato is what you need. Candy bar is what you want. Over stimulation.

This was filmed during a time when the interaction between black and white, especially when mixing urban and rural, as well as North and South, was fraught with tension. Virgil' s statement was actually fairly benign. Unfortunately, we seem to be in times such as these depicted, again.

That is such a terrific scene, but what is missing, from the movie, is the setup. How did it come about that a white man invited a black man into his house to socialize, as equals, and to drink with him, as equals, in the deep south at that time? That sort of thing just wasn't done, it didn't happen. Now, sure, Gillespie, and Tibbs, have both overcome a lot of barriers and prejudices, but I really wish they had included the scene where Gillespie extended that invitation, and how Tibbs reacted to it before accepting, and them shown the conversation and the drinks leading up to this point. Of course, by not showing it, they let us imagine it. That was done several times in the movie. I don't know if it's damned brilliant writing, directing, or editing, but it is damned brilliant story telling.

I’m 36, alone and restarting my life. I know I want to change for the better but is it just me or do you feel at times you got trapped into something, unintentionally? Maybe I made bad choices but don’t we all? All I’m saying is I deserve better and I say this to any of you- who feel as I do-so do you. Turn your ways, repent to Christ, make your life count and seize each day! God bless you all. Don’t give up!
