I WAS WAITING FOR YOUR REACTION TO USNAVI! And you did not disappoint. Next time you can sing Breathe along with me. Also can we please find Latino clubs and go dancing’s tnx.
When Barbara got confused during The Club when Benny sang "yo this is the girl who cost us our job today!" Was literally me when I listened to In The Heights for the first time. For anyone who doesn't know, what Benny is referring to is that Kevin (Nina's Dad) sold the Rosario's cab service to pay for Nina's college tuition. And so, Benny lost his job.
Having so much fun and then crying at Alabanza is how all of us experience this musical. I literally started crying at the beginning of the music. It's one of those songs I can't listen to without crying so I always have to skip it!
It's a pretty basic bust mural of her in front of a Sunrise, but I promise you the reveal will make you cry! BTW: The film version comes out next year and Lin is playing Piragua Guy!
I'd suggest: Heathers (if you like satire and dark content) Amélie (if you like Philippa Soo [Eliza from Hamilton]) 21 Chump Street (More Lin Manuel-Miranda!) Waitress (A lot of people cry at this soundtrack!) School of Rock (Epic soundtrack! More Alex Brightman (Beetlejuice)) Wicked (if you haven't heard it yet! I was very hesitant to listen at first but it's amazing!) The Prom (It's got more of a pop vibe but it's really good!) A little extra item: Hamilton in 7 Minutes (I'd recommend the animatic by Ziksua) (It's incredibly well done!!) Also I love the She-Ra drawing in the background and I look forward to your new videos!
Yay thanks a lot for the suggestions! Out of those I only haven't listened to 21 Chump Street, School of Rock and The Prom, so will add those to the list! Funny thing about Wicked is that I actually didn't like the soundtrack much until I actually saw the show and fell absolutely in love. Quite a few people suggesting me to react to animatics so probably happening soon ;) Can't believe you actually spotted the drawing hahaha Good eye! So so happy to have you on the channel
i worked on a production of In The Heights last summer as a dresser (costumes, quick changes, manage dressing rooms/repairs/laundry etc) and this show is honestly so electric and fun. our cast had a better Nina and Vanessa (imo) than these recordings. when things come back to life again, i highly recommend seeing it! you miss so much in just the songs. so much of the story is about the energy of the barrio and people living life while someone else's song is taking place across the stage. it definitely shows you how important neighborhood can be (or highlights the lack thereof in your own life D:). and yeah alabanza is sad every night somehow. :(
That's awesome Kellyanne! And I totally believe you, you can already feel the sense of community just by listening to the soundtrack, I can only imagine seeing the show just reinforces that. Besides, I don't think you can ever tell a story about a Latin community without that electrifying energy (speaking as someone who lived in Latin America for years)
Me: When you can sing all the lyrics including the Spanish because you’re Mexican and this musical holds a special place in your heart for the amount of Spanish it has and like you can understand it. Also me: noice
"Everything I Know" is my favorite song. Okay, strap in for story time: There were two women who were highly influential "Abuela Claudia" figures in my life - Abuelita Enelda (🎶she's not really my abuela🎶) and Miss Sigrid. Abuelita Enelda taught me Spanish and loved my siblings and me as though we were her grandkids; Miss Sigrid was my mother's German friend - more like an aunt to me - and she taught me proper etiquette, love for all types of movies, and how to swear "like a lady". When I got the news that Abuelita Enelda passed away, went straight to my room and listened to "Everything I Know" on repeat. It helped me grieve her, and really allowed me to cry. Fast-forward to New Years' Day 2018 - I was visiting friends in Peru for the holidays and had just finished up a morning at the beach. As I got ready for lunch, I suddenly felt this inexplicable, overwhelming grief; the weight of it felt like an anvil on my chest. The song "Everything I Know" started running through my head on repeat and just wouldn't leave. I finally gave in and listened to it, and I started sobbing. Again, I was quite confused - I didn't have any reason to be feeling these feelings so strongly or really at all! I went down for lunch and started talking with my friend's family. Somehow, we got on the topic of family friends. Suddenly, I found myself talking non-stop about "Sigrid, la amiga Alemán de mi madre". All of these stories just started pouring out, and I felt that inexplicable weight on my chest again. For the rest of the trip (one week), I found myself making multiple comments about how "Miss Sigrid would have your head if she saw you doing that!" and generally thinking about her often. When I got back home, I got the news: Miss Sigrid had suddenly passed away on New Years' Day. I did the mental math in my head and realized that, accounting for time differences, "Everything I Know" got stuck in my head at around the same time that Miss Sigrid's medical emergency started, and I started telling non-stop stories about her at around the same time she passed away. I still get chills when I think about it Both women played such a big part in my upbringing and helped shape who I am today, and every single day I thank them for everything I know.
I'm really sorry for your losses, but knowing that they left you with such beautiful memories warms my heart. I also very much relate to this situation, something similar happened to me, so my eyes watered a little bit reading this. I'm sure you'll forever feel their presence in your life, carry that with pride and love. And may "Everything I Know" always bring them back to you ❤ Thank you so much for sharing this, Aubrey
Fun fact: Miranda started writing IN THE HEIGHTS in 1999, when he was in college, and at the time it was going to be about a love triangle between characters called Nina, Benny, and Lincoln. The only thing, musically, that remains of that first version is "In Washington Heights!" at the end of the opening number.
My mother is a Puerto Rican from Philadelphia, so when I saw In the Heights, I knew she would either love it or hate it, but because I loved it, I risked it. We laughed, we cried, and it’s one of my top 10 favorite musicals (number 6) of all time. It feels so genuine.
I have a little bit different of a suggestion: Dr. Horribles sing Along Blog, a Short Musical (40minutes) by the whedon brothers created during the Writers Guild of America Strike, with Neil Patrick harris as the titular character and with Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day in the other important roles The Soundtrack can be found on spotify, in addition the entire musical which was released in 3 parts on the internet can be found on youtube /just look for Dr. Horribles Sing Along Blog) so it would be possible to do a reaction to the musical with the little bits of dialog not just the cast album :)
That's awesome! I've been looking for animatics I could react to because only listening to the soundtracks makes me anxious sometimes hahaha I'll check this out, thanks a lot Max ;)
I've only been recently obsessed with ITH and I'm glad I found someone else's reaction! Great video! You should react to The Book of Mormon soon, it's pretty good.
Aw thank you Nicky! Not yet, so it's definitely going in the list. If you're subscribed to the channel you'll probably get a notification about that one soon hahaha ;) Thanks for watching!
Ok, I saw the movie yesterday, and when I tell you I ugly cried- ahhhhh it was so good!! I hope you get to see it at some point, (and yes, they did bring justice to 96,000 and it is the best thing ever)
Loving your reactions to these and the channel, still working my way through all your vids. Could you add ‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’ to your list please. Seen it live recently and would defo recommend it.
Stephen Sondheim is one of Lin's heros and teachers. I think the easier introductions to his musicals would be Into the Woods and Sunday in the Park With George. Sweeney Todd is somewhat hardcore.
Sonys line in Carnaval about having a crush on nina had me so confuse first time I listened to it because my gay ass just ASSUMED he was dating pete I am not even kidding Then I found out that many school productions actually have them date and i felt validated
How have you gotten so far in this series without doing hamilton? Do you already know it? Into the Heights is so good. I took my daughter ehen it was in theaters. We both loved it. Lin-Manuel Miranda is one of my writing heroes. I don't think I've found anything yet that I haven't liked. Also, if you are still looking for ideas for musicals to do, I would recommend two. The first is only a movie musical as far as I'm aware "The Greatest Showman". The second is a personal favorite of mine "The Scarlet Pimpernel". Highly recommend finding an english off broadway version. If you contact me, I'd happy to give you a link to the one I love. I grew up on the story and love the characters. But the broadway show went through, two or three major changes especially with the songs. The soundtrack is of the first verion. I like both, but you will miss a lot of context if you don't know the story without watching it. Side note: one thing I find very interesting with retellings of the Scarlet Pimpernel stories, is that depending on who/how the character of Chauvelin it determines what characteristics of our hero are on display. So he seems a little different in each version (movie, book, show, musical) which is really cool to me.
