I've spent the last year in this limbo of knowing Lin Manuel would never lit his baby be harmed, and worrying that I've set my expectations unattainable high!
I told my friend (who is also a big Hamilfan like me) that I was listening to a musical by Lin Manuel Miranda starring Lin Manuel Miranda as an orphan immigrant from the Caribbean whilst I was listening to In The Heights then we started sending each other the lyrics to Alexander Hamilton until she sent 'What's your name man' and i replied 'I am Usnavi and you've probably never heard my name'
She didn't reply for ages and I'm just sat there thinking 'I've scared her away with my new fandom, haven't I' I saw her at school and asked her why she hadn't replied and she just said she didn't know how to and I'm there like 'XD Yep, I've scared her off with my new fandom haven't I' she likes Hamilton and DEH but she hasn't managed to properly introduce me to DEH yet and I think I failed with ITH but she's still the biggest Hamilfan I know (other than me and about equal to another friend I've got who's actually going to see Hamilton but also knows a few ITH songs) Also, I love your profile picture XD
Yeah, he seems to enjoy playing immigrants from the Caribbean (or the part-time superhero duck child thereof). I think he may be a bit biased in favor of that role. Though I can't quite put my finger on why...
Yes, and I'm still wondering why (again) they didn't find a Dominican to play a Dominican character, unless Anthony Ramos has some Dominican roots, which he looks like he could.
+Autumn Kalista now, now, it's important to remember: what he did in college was a first draft, which had like 2 songs and it was completely different. He started writing in college, yes, but it took years of refining, rewriting it, and having multiple other talents working on it before finally, years later, we received the definitive version of In the Heights.
A Comment like that makes me sad that Christopher Larson died so young. I think he could of still made amazing stories. But he inspired Lin so I always feel that his spirit continues
I imagine everytime he writes a musical it goes like: Lin: so I just wrote this amazing musical. I guess who'll play the main role... Everyone: Lin, don't. Lin: Oh yeah! ME! Everyone: Not again.
@@sorrynotsorry6 he said in an interview (a spanish one while Mary Poppins Returns was con theatre) that he always wanted to be into musicals, but it was hard for him to be on broadway because of his "latin origin" X) so he decided he had to solve that by creating his own stories to be part of that world :')
George Washington rapping about Donald Trump... No comment. I wonder if Lin regrets that lyric now! (Chris Jackson looks so different! I'd forgotten...)
this show is absolutely brilliant. I got to see it 3 times with the original broadway cast. i wish people would see this as a separate entity from Hamilton. It was nominated for 13 tonys, won 4 including best musical, won the grammy and was nominated for a Pulitzer. I'm so happy people will get to see more of Lin's brilliance when the movie comes out next summer!
3:07 not a criticism, but i just noticed that this detail was lost in the movie as they went with a different kind of setting and choreography. When Vanessa starts singing about leaving town when she gets money, Usnavi gets sad, but Benny notices this and starts singing his lines to distract Usnavi with happy thoughts
Julia Pelletier I know. But since, timeline/historically speaking, the events of Hamilton occurred waaaaaaaaaaaaay before the events of In The Heights, yeah.
Lin's face at 1:57 if you want to see a facial expression that says "my best friend is performing at the Tonys and is killing it and I couldn't be prouder".
Honestly the sad part is Lin is always the worst actor in his plays. He's such a talented creator but in terms of actually performing, he's the weakest. Everybody always outshines him.
I still haven't recovered from the fact that Chris Jackson wasnt nominated for a tony for this performance but if he wins for Hamilton (which he better) I will feel slightly justified.
Actually hard agree. I love both of them, I don't actually find myself listening to songs from Hamilton without friends and whatever. In the Heights is so musically and fantastically complicated that similar to Hamilton I can hear different things everytime I listen to it. I think Hamilton is more somber though since Burr is reflecting on Hamilton's life and the founding of a severely flawed, yet beautiful country. In the Heights is more optimistic and feels much more alive, like the whole city is the main character
Me: "Omg Chris looks soooo different! I mean so does Lin but thats because he is older and he has longer hair and a beard. I can't put my finger on why Chris looks different other than being older...." Me: *looks at pictures of Chris as Washington* Me: *watches this* Me: *looks at picture of Chris as Washington again* Me: *watches this again* Me: Me: Me: Me: "sweET JESUS CHRIS IS BALD HELP PAPI IS BALD"
Wow, has Miranda grown as a writer and composer: as good as "In the Heights" was, you can just see the mega-growth in music, lyrics, choreography, etc., etc. in "Hamilton" eight years later: so much more sophisticated and complex. So fascinating to watch his amazing growth and development. I so look forward to seeing what he creates next, and next, and next......
lauramartha3 Ive been a fan of Lin since In the Heights. Moana and Mary Poppins Returns have been pleasant remedies of my playful jealousy toward my fellow theatre geeks who have seen Hamilton
People who love this should see his new play coming out in July, "Hamilton"; was just as good but this time about the founding fathers of our country. LIn-manual is a genius imo.
@@muckymucks Thank you for the warm welcome. I'm currently going on a long binge of just watching anything related to Lin-Manuel Miranda rn which includes In The Heights and it's really good
@@Justapersonontheinternet-li7nu In that case, check out Lin-Manuel performing Button on the Stephen Colbert show if you haven’t already. He wrote it and it’s incredible.
I watched this for the first time in 2021 and it made me cry my eyes out. I have never been able to watch this show online or on stage but i have listened to the soundtrack a million times and that was exactly how i imagined it to look. The cast looks so young compared to now. If i cried at a tony award performance, i have no chance at the new film.
Ok so I'm way too many years late but I just listened to the soundtrack for the first time and damn... I think I prefer this to Hamilton. And I really love Hamilton. But you can really feel the heart in this and connect with the characters. There's a slight detachment (for me) with the fact that Hamilton is happening so long ago. But... I'm also a broke college student trying to figure out my life and I feeeeel this.
@@sentrogaspers9813 Can I ask why exactly? I only ask because I generally compare musicals written/composed by other people. I’ve got a favourite Sondheim musical for example but I appreciate all of his works and like to compare them against each other just to study his style and see the similarities and differences. I didn’t mean it in a negative way.
I had the honor of seeing this entire original cast in the Broadway show over 10 years ago. OMG. It was absolutely fantastic. Lin definitely is a genius.
This was the first Tony Awards performance I remember seeing on TV, when I was 12. I clearly remember hearing Karen Olivo sing, and think "who is she, and how is her voice so perfect?!" Even now, this musical remains one of my favorites. And Karen Olivo is still a vocal angel...
What’s interesting to see is how different Chris’s performance is as Benny vs Washington. Benny is loose and funky. Washington is obviously stern and serious, as a general and the first president of the US. Shows his talent!
Hm why is George Washington singing to us with a tie and shirt. (All jokes aside I love that Miranda brought friends up with him to the highest level.)
