Murakami’s first work, the short novel Almost Transparent Blue, written while he was still a student, deals with promiscuity and drug use among disaffected Japanese youth.
Critically acclaimed as a new style of literature, it won the newcomer’s literature prize in 1976 despite some observers decrying it as decadent. Later the same year, Blue won the Akutagawa Prize, going on to become a best seller. In 1980, Murakami published the much longer novel Coin Locker Babies, again to critical acclaim.
Takashi Miike’s feature film Audition (1999) was based on one of his novels. Murakami reportedly liked it so much he gave Miike his blessing to adapt Coin Locker Babies. The screen play was worked on by director Jordan Galland. However, Miike could not raise funding for the project. An adaptation directed by Michele Civetta is currently in production.
In the miso soup
It is just before New Year’s. Frank, an overweight American tourist, has hired Kenji to take him on a guided tour of Tokyo’s sleazy nightlife on three successive evenings. But Frank’s behavior is so strange that Kenji begins to entertain a horrible suspicion: that his new client is in fact the serial killer currently terrorizing the city. It isn’t until later, however, that Kenji learns exactly how much he has to fear and how irrevocably his encounter with this great white whale of an American will change his life.

Glad you enjoyed it. It’s a lot more gruesome than Murakami but there is a similar writing styles yes. Or rather translating style? Would love to know what you thought if you managed to read it!

@@Shreyalahkar I think the styles are simple and easy to read, which I like. The translator has done a good job of carrying over the same writing style for and adapting it to a western audience. I wish there were more books like this. Have you read many other works of murakami ?

I find it fascinating you say a common mistake that people who aren’t accustomed with Japanese literature make is to read through the book in eager anticipation / expectance of gradual displays or key plot points when that really isn’t the case. I perceived the bombastic display of gore in the middle of the book juxtaposed to everything else as a downside. Because I, someone who’s never read any Japanese literature ever am accustomed to a gradual buildup and downfall. Not like one huge unexpected spike then an immediate falloff. But thinking back on the experience retrospectively I really did enjoy the message the book was trying to impart. It’s platitudes of loneliness and injustice within the sex industry of Japan were gripping. I also adored the almost inhuman and demonic description lended to Frank. While the book failed sadly in disturbing me, my favorite parts had to be when Frank placed the piece of charred human skin on Kenji’s door, and when during the part in the book where Frank is hypnotizing that girl (forgot her name) Kenji notices all those scars on his wrists, as if he’s attempted to end his life thousands of times. Those two details really stuck me as independently disturbing. Overall really solid book and your review of it actually made me like it more. Sorry if my comment comes off as somewhat in incoherent / rambly. It’s 2 am and I’ve just finished the book and want to see what others think.

Hello this is the first time I’ve come across your channel. I read this book about three or four years ago and I share similar thoughts to you. I’ve also tried to get my hands on ‘Almost Transparent Blue’; I think I can recall some readers/reviewers comparing it to Bret Easton Ellis’s debut novel ‘Less than Zero’. Have you read it? I have and liked what it was saying about American youths of the time period in which it’s based. P.s. Sorry for my mistakes and edits!
