Hey Jordan😁, I love your content! Tell me, how do you approach a mix? Because I have problems finding the balance between mixing a mix cleanly so that you can hear every sound well and with priority but on the other hand listening to everything together to make everything sound like it belongs together. For example, do you first listen to the kick solo and then add the stems sound by sound? Or do you mix the songs while listening to the song in its entirety. Do you have any tips for a fan?😅

I have to say this... I spent around a week mapping out all the vocal parts to give to a singer to re-track... seeing you go through the vocals and the harmonies is such a crazy "synchronicity" moment man. I swear I know this song like the back of my hand... I just am finishing up the vocals for this remix. Would love to email it to you when it's done, get your thoughts. It's a completely different take... 125 bpm futuristic sounding melodic g-house.

Hey Manny! That would have been my buddies Take A Daytrip...can't say exact cuz it's their sauce!!! But as a general...most people on a hiphop vocal will jump at a Sony C800 mic, a nice preamp like a Neve, than a compressor like the TubeTech or 1176!!!

I'd really appreciate if you took the time to answer this; but on the mix bus for Holiday did you end up messing around with the stereo image at all? (Kinda like how you did in your Mix Bus video with the Ozone Imager) And if so, can you briefly detail what you did exactly? Thanks!

I typically do some minor stereo imaging. Usually with Ozone, or my plugin Spread. It's usually very subtle and it's more on the highs, a bit less on the mids, and none on the lows.

@@djswivel When using Ozone for mix bus imaging, do you use the Stereoize button? In your mixbus video it seemed like you didn't. Care to elaborate why/ why not?

This is a bit late, but I'd really appreciate it if you took the time to reply : 1) Was Nas's vocals tuned (like manually using Melodyne) prior to being sent to you? Asking because in my experience vocals sound really wobbly and bad if fed directly into AutoTune with the settings you have on here. I always needed to have a grid tuner do the heavy lifting, then have the AutoTune on top as a polishing "effect". Idk if that's proper. 2) What sample rate are you working at and what sample rate do you send out to the mastering engineer?

I've never had any issue with autotune. I only use Melodyne in rare cases when it's absolutely necessary. I believe Nas's vocals were just autotune, no Melo.

@@djswivel interesting, because you seem to leave Flex Tune, Humanize, and everything else untouched and still get a very natural sound. By any chance are you working at 96k sample rate? I've heard somewhere before that AutoTune works better on higher sample rate sessions.

The best thing (and most cliche) is to just keep mixing mixing mixing and compare it to the stuff you love...trust me you'll get there if you don't stop trying!

Excuse me sir. I have a question. If you don't high pass filter hi-hats or low pass kicks, don't unnecessary frequencies overlap or make mix muddy? I always high pass and low pass almost everything. So was it wrong? I appreciate it for breaking down your job😊🙌

It’s a choice. I personally like kicks that have more complexity in them - including higher frequency information. But each song requires its own approach.

How can all the drums be on such a high volume setting without being clip gained - were they clip gained before being printed and sent?

Well, the fader volume isn’t relevant if the audio was printed quieter. But also, when working in 32bit floating point you don’t have some of the same clipping issues with bussing etc.

Hey Young Banker! I'm mixing totally in the box but on the occasional time I'll use an AVID fader box to do some vocal rides...mixing is about your ears, not the gear! Keep listening and you'll improve daily man!

Well...there is always an advantage to using analog gear on the way in...but with the emulations these days you can do so much with the right creativity :)
