A few years back a friend sent me a link to Work Shit Out which I got at 4am. I was so blown away just listening on the tablet. This was the stuff.. I ran into the music room and put it on the big system. I had been in a funk believing there was nothing of any value or quality in contemporary music. You shattered that illusion with music that was so invigorating , tight, skillful and downright fun. Great to see you at Rick's place.

Musicians are the WORST audience to have though, they never lose themselves in the music like a "normal" fan would/does! They just stare at the band playing, working out their techniques, analysing the styles and seeing/hearing if there's anything they can use themselves! Then their partner nudges/pokes them in the ribs..and says...."Song's finished!?!" Replied by "oh yeah! Sorry!" 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️🙈🤣🤣🤣

First influence Jonah named is Lyle Mays. So happy always to hear Lyle's name. I hear it in Jonah's playing!
@dondouglas
@dondouglas Месяц назад
Lyle Mays ended up removed from the music scene, disillusioned. He was never recognized in life for the value of what he did, personally I think he is one of the best pianists after Bill Evans. Not only in his quality as a pianist but in the innovativeness of his sounds. Lyle was also a great person, a great gourmet and coach of his city's children's soccer team. Speaking of musicians, Milton Nascimento told me what a wonderful person he was. I miss his presence every day.

Such dopey lyrics, then an insanely great impressionistic Chopinesque/Lyle Mays/Pat Metheny Group piano solo, then the greatest drum solo ever to be hidden inside a pop song, then it ends all too soon. I wish it had a face-melting Henrik Linder bass solo as well.

Two things: Social media is obviously the modern way for artists to promote their work but the artists talked about, Jacob, Vulf, Snarky, Corey and DL are the most talented musicians in the world today who also have the visual production talent as well. Another thing they all have in common which I believe is natural because of their talents is widespread collaboration. And please let me tell you a quick DL story; We purchased their M&G package really only to get early admission because there’s no way we weren’t getting to the rail for their show. I am not a musician, I can only play the volume knob on my stereo but these three men were so gracious. They were actually standing in front of the stage waiting to greet our group as we entered the venue. They made a point to shake hands and greet everybody individually. They invited the group on stage to see and talk about all the gear. They were so humble and so welcoming. As people they left such a positive impression on me. As for the shows, I’ve seen all of the modern musicians mentioned and DL certainty fits in this elite group of musicians. I wish they played more shows in the Northeast on this tour. We did two shows and I tried and tried to get to more but timing and last minute expensive flights just couldn’t work for me. I hope they come back this way sooner than later!! We saw JC last night and we’ll also see him in NYC Friday night. I didn’t think it was possible for JC to perform better than the last tour but he has raised the bar again!! Or as we all know, musically He is “the bar”. Stunning performance on many levels. Just like the lyric Lin wrote; “Look around…. We’re so lucky to be alive right now” Rock on!!

Yes, great players, great people, great band, great music. And wonderful that Lyle Mays gets such a solid mention. He was an exceptional player whose nuanced musicality made him unique in a world where flash and speed tend to dominate the narrative. We should also remind ourselves that these lads are all speaking English as a second language. They're articulate, personable, have great vocabulary and express themselves without the need for cliches and profanity (not that Rick would tolerate the latter). Plus, it's probably safe to say that bottles of Jack Daniels, a bag of medicinals and a bowl M&Ms with no brown ones are unlikely to be on their tour rider.

Loyal viewer. This is a first. This is the first artist you've talked about that I've been totally in the clouds about. HOLY F-CK BALLS. They are awesome! Pop artists who not only know who Lyle Mays is, but can play a little like him??? (piano solo on "Work Shit Out" is serious) I now have a fantasy. 3 years from now I'll accidentally turn on the Grammy's and instead of the parade of off-key, simplistic, vomitus mediocrity that crosses that stage I'll see these 3 guys blowing everyone's minds...young kids and old musicians alike. Not a Taylor Swift in sight. Maybe just maybe the music is gonna be ok.

What specific Grammy award winners do you have a beef about? Taylor Swift is a gifted songwriter. Beyonce and Adele are incredible singers. You don't like today's pop but pop hasn't been groundbreaking for decades.

I can't get out of my head the musical explosion that could have been the encounter between Michael Jckson and Dirty Loops, who drew a lot of inspiration from him. Listen to Rock You, it's a track we'd have loved to have had at the same time from a Jackson supercharged with Bad sauce, but even more Bad. Thank you Rick for this interview, and bravo for accepting to be the candid old man (which I am too) by asking questions that the band has trouble answering. They too seem a little overwhelmed by young people, the real ones, for whom music is an earful of chewing gum that they experience like everything else through the founding, structuring and vital element that is the iPhone.

An excellent interview with an awesomely talented group of musicians. Thank you to Sweden for encouraging music in their children's lives - I only wish the rest of the world would be so gracious.

Incredible band. Took my daughter to see them about 10 years ago in Toronto. I was in my late 50s and she was mid 20's and we both loved them. In fact after the concert she said this is my new favorite band.

A friend shared with me the Hit Me vid from RU-vid back in 2015. I've been a Dirty Loops fan ever since! They are primo musicians!!!

The guy who strikes me as closest to the sheer melodic virtuosity of the Dirty Loops guys is Valeriy Stepanov out of Russia. His fusion project and other things he does is just sublime if you love fusion and pop influences melded together in an incomparable way. He's also a killer singer and guitarist - maybe Jonah should give him a call.

This is such a great interview! Hearing Dirty Loops talk about bands like Pat Metheny Group (especially the Imaginary Day album which is my personal favorite), ToTo, Brecker Brothers and Chick Corea… made me stupidly giddy.
