Interesting bits and pieces:

2:46 On Digital and Analog Technology
5:00 Sound Poerty
6:17 On The MS-10
11:40 Inside The Box
17:56 Sidechain Compression

I really like these videos that you guys are doing where the artist just gets to ramble on and show his methodology and techniques without any heavy-handed editorial comment or product focus that is found in some other types of channels.

Can't agree more on the philosophy and the T-shirt. Scott's energy is so special, that I felt myself like talking to him in a room (or a space?). Great to see him doing what he does best, healthy, inspired and with shining eyes. Mine do shine too, watching him talking and recording with passion throughout the years. Great vocoder trick! Thank you, Scott!

you definitely can do everything ITB these-days, software is incredible and you can do more with it than hardware. Where software falls down for me is when you want to jam and practice playing chords etc, just switching on my Nord, Virus, Analog keys or Sub 37 and jamming away tweaking aimlessly is so easy to do compared to software.
@rdean150
@rdean150 2 года назад
100% agree. But where hardware then loses ground again to software is in the ability to revisit that jam days later and tweak the composition / performance slightly without losing the original sound. Although the specific synths you mentioned are actually some of the best at facilitating this, due to their tight software integration. Virus has Ti, Elektron has Overbridge, Sub 37 has a great Vst and comprehensive MIDI implementation. Don't know about Nord, but I assume it at least has full MIDI CC output (it better at that price point). But even with these, you still have to take nontrivial steps to capture the starting point of all parameters before you begin your jam session.

Its cool to hear him say you can do everything in the box. I stopped using and buying hardware 10 years ago and never looked back. I sold off everything that had been collecting dust two years ago. Don’t miss it. I use a vocoder to make Dub chords sometimes. I send drums through it. Sometimes just play chords through it. His technique is interesting too. Might give this a try.

@21:31 Love when he explains the air pressure being changed in a room and how it applies to sidechain because at some point, it’s not adding or even removing instruments that makes a track great. The concept of playing with negative space is one that fascinates me. Would love to know if you use this in other ways than sidechaining Scott.
@scottmonteith7258
@scottmonteith7258 2 года назад
Absolutely. I think on a mix level it is great to create a tactile situation whether with a physical mixer or midi controller to move through parts and try different volume settings, also with fx levels. I think the more organic, human-driven decisions made during the arrangements and mixing process the better

@scottmonteith7258
@scottmonteith7258 2 года назад
not at all!!! subs are the foundation, just set them at a level that sounds good and don't touch them until you can hear them coming through a proper club sound system and have that channel with a fader to adjust to the room
