I have witnessed this "phenomena" multiple times. "She doesn't look Mexican!" I reply that "she could be Spanish, like FROM Spain!" Spanish people range from light hair and complexion to Antonio Banderas - who could be mistaken as "Mexican", probably because Spain was invaded by Muslims. I think this further confuses the issue. As always, very insightful video amigo. You present these like a good college professor-a casual conversation, which makes people enjoy learning.

PS: I am referring to the Muslim/ Moor Invasion of Spain in 711- I am not an anti-immigrant person referring to immigration as an "invasion". I realized that some people might misunderstand.

It wasnt because of the arab occupation but because the more south you go in europe , darker hair and often skin is more common Also a there is an amazing sun light and people LOVE to get "Tanned"

Is Antonio Banderas really that dark? I think he tans artificially. He doesn't really look darker than Catherine Zeta Jones. Look up La gata de schrodinger or Diego Ibañez from Carolina Durante. Those are dark spaniards. Also I think they are darker because of earlier iberian immigration into the coastal regions of spain. But interestingly alot of the darker spaniards I have seen in the Basque country which had minimal arab influence.

@@em-sf7me Great point. I just meant that people from Spain range in phenotypes for a variety of historic reasons. The real bottom line that Spanish women are almost always gorgeous - Scientifically speaking of course!

I am from Spain. When I lived in Alabama I had a hard time trying to speak Spanish with Mexican immigrants who spoke Spanish among themselves. I didn't have that problem in Miami though. Some white Americans told me that I looked American. I told them that they were the ones who looked European.

« I’m too white to speak Spanish »... this typical American sentence make all the rest of the world laugh hard Does this works also with other latin languages ? Do American people usually can distinguish latin languages or do they assume that all latin languages are Spanish, so are seen as « non-white » or « non-European » languages ?
@Jamestele1
@Jamestele1 3 года назад
Depends on where you are at. In parts of Northern Virginia, New York, California, etc., most people would definitely distinguish Italian from Spanish. Some areas maybe not so much!

It is amazing how you represent the and bring to our attention USA's worst attributes, that of being egocentrical, racist, ignorant and talk about it so relax. I am well aware that points you are making are very real among the least educated and racist people, however there is a small percentage, maybe less than 10% of people from the US that do know the different backgrounds of Spanish Speaking people.

Each one depends on what they consider to be Hispanic. Some will say only those that their mother tongue is Spanish are from Spain or in their day they were Spanish colonies although today the official language of their country is not Spanish, for example those of the Philippines, others will say that only the descendants of the current Spain, in my case I am Basque, not peninsula, I am continental, what they call French Basque country, by proximity I know the language, am I Hispanic? Is a Sephardic or Berber descendant of those expelled in 1492, although they do not know Spanish or Ladino, are they Hispanic? I consider that YES, an IrIsh Ian Keith Gibson Ritchie who is a Hispanicist of Irish origin and nationalized Spanish since 1984 can be considered Hispanic? I consider that Yes

Let´s make a test. Why don´t you try to say something in spanish? Also you can have a T-shirt with the words "I´m too white to speak spanish"; or, better, you can wear that shirt and made another video in the streets asking people if they like your shirt.

When I'm better at spanish I'm going to speak to more Americans in spanish to see their reactions. I already do it once in a while. People at work are like "speak English!" They mostly ignore me. One guy who didn't know I was learning spainsh looked really shocked lol. Next new guy at work I'm going to try all spainsh to see how he reacts.

More so in Mexico there is racism because there are a variety of different races in Mexico and in every Latin American country including White, Black, Asian and Indigenous but as soon as your come to the USA everyone is pumped into Hispanic and at this point in history Hispanics = person of color. Not to mention that each Latin American country has its own culture and identity. It would be like if a USA citizen moved to another country and was just flattened into 1 monolith concept . This sounds crazy because we are so invested on everyone having there own identity in the USA and to flatten it to one thing would update some people. This is the same thing with Hispanics.

Definitely notice this as a common misconception even amongst people from Mexico. They've racialized the language to the point that they think it's a "brown" thing to do (to speak spanish). Americans if they have this misconception at all I suspect it's largely because of exposure to Mexicans who insist that Brownness and Hispanity are inherently connected. No language is inherently attached to any phenotype. That would be proposterous as race doesn't actually exist and one's cultural behaviors have nothing to do with one's physical appearance. Not speaking for other latin american cultures, but Mexican culture is very race obsessed and often draws racial and cultural lines in the same place. (Not all Mexicans, but most I'd dare say) A solid chunk of Mexicans have no idea that Mexican isn't race and so honestly think of everything through a "brown skinned equals mexicannor at least hispanic" lense. This shouldn't come as a surprise considering highly impoverished nations with poor education are bound to produce a large populace that are ignorant of their own cultural reality. (Mexico is not exactly a well off country and many Mexicans don't have the luxury of learning about these things.)

Yeah we Americans aren't good at geography. I'm better then the average person, but that ins't saying much. I'm learning Spanish and a while back I was talking to someone who didn't know english. I heard México and Barcelona. I know Barcelona is in Spain, but hearing México I thought it probably had a city there named the same thing. Later I realized she must of came from Barcelona to México, then here. I wish I understood more, I might not get a chance to talk with someone from Spain agian.

Even before starting to learn Spanish I thought knowing more then one language is cool. My granddad was german and I had friends in german families, but no one wanted to teach me german, they pretty much barred all german. Personally I think it takes a really smart person to learn another language (more so now then before) it's hard to learn another language least for me. I'd like to learn a bunch of languages if possible.

other then learning new cultures and talking with other people. One reason I'm learning other languages is its said to help with brain health. It potentially helps with things like alzheimer's. Its a shame more Americans aren't open to the idea of learning another language. Being multilingual is useful and helpful from my point of view. I have a lot of respect to anyone who learns more then one language, it's very hard and wish more people realized what people have to go through. Especially languages not related to english. For example, a Japanese speaker learning English is impressive, I don't think I could learn Japanese...I'm struggling with spanish at 3 hours a day which is said to be the easiest to learn.
