One thing that is forgotten about the Silents is that they were major social activists, organizers, and leaders: Beatniks, anti-nuke activists, civil rights leaders, Vietnam War protesters, LSD advocates, etc. The youth of the 1960s were Boomers, but the many involved in the events of the 1960s were Silents. Yet the stereotype of Silents that has been invented erases this real history of that generation. Even before that, back in the 1940s, the older Silents were caught up in a moral panic about their generation becoming juvenile delinquency, drug use, and teen sex. Consider that 50% of Silent teenagers had sex, higher than the percentage for Millennials and GenZ. It was an era of mass change, including increasing rates of women in the workforce and so many Silent youth came home to empty houses. This led to a lot of public fear. That entirely doesn't fit the generational stereotype.
very interesting! I call the Black members of this generation the "Great Migrators" because they were anything but silent. They were the first to start leaving the South/the Caribbean en masse, which critically solidified our place here in America, AS Americans. In many places, they were enthusiastically embraced. In most places, they were ambivalently or begrudgingly accepted. Most importantly, they refused to be intimidated/rejected-- even when they faced violent opposition. The whole world was changed (for the better) by their music, style, art, and conviction! Soul Music, Calypso, and Electric blues touched the entire world, lighting the matches that would eventually spark Rock & Roll, Country, and Disco/Pop music.
I'm a gen X and I just loved my grandmother who was from the Silent Gen. She was the one who saw my potential and inspired me to do what I do today. I Love the values of this generation much more than the Boomers. Integrity, fairness and good behaviour.. This was not something I was raised with but I wish we will get it back.
I am 35 living in 2021 and I was raised by my grandparents born 1940 and 1945. The values and practices and beliefs I was raised on is hated today. Praise God, Be a real Man, Don't be sensitive, Dont let the dog in the house, Don't trust Germans and so on.
What the heck. Imagine being a small child in the insecurity of the Great Depression and WWI, and then being a teenager during the prosperity of the post war boom, and then a young adult when everyone your age is having massive amounts of kids. What a mind trip!
My grandparents came from this era, the older Silent G's though from the late 20s. They were int heir early 30s when they had my parent, whom were in their late 20s/early 30s when they had me in the late 80s. It's a very wide gap, lol.
You hear alot about baby boomers, millennials and gen z but not too much of the silent generation. 3 of my grandparents would be included in this generation. One of my grandparents was born in 1924 do I guess she would be a greatest generation.
And the millennials are like the generation that came up in WW 1, the lost generation, the similar issues both groups experienced in a dystopian world with a bleak look is so different than Victory day for the GI and summer of love for the Boomer
Whatever I am glad I didn't have them for parents the WW2 gen was bad enough. Gen X ers got everything good handed to them by boomers. And they went to work destroying most of it .... Because they JUST DONT CARE!!!!!!! AS GO THE BOOMERS SO GOES GEN Xers. You all better hope we steer it back to the middle.
As a Millennial, same 😖 them and the Greatest Generation are like no other. Too bad people don’t acknowledge they did what they had to do to get ahead because they had no other choice.
You know, they have a lot common with our gen z. If we scratched away the outside surface of both generations, we have a lot of commonalities with the silent generation.
We courted. That can take some considerable time; until death do us part was the goal. And so it was for we two. We were born within a few weeks of each other. We were born most likely for the same reason. By late '39 the women became aware that the US would become involved in the war. The girlfriends and wives realized that they might lose their men. They wanted the men to leave them with babies. because they feared the men might never come back. Both of our fathers entered the service. Her dad - submarines. My dad - Army Air Corps. Those guys did not talk about the war. They were silent. No, she and I did not know each other. She was from the Great Smokeys. I was from the Chesapeake. Religions were different, too. When we finally met, her childhood stories matched mine. During the war, we lived with relatives. Our moms were single moms, who were not really widows but the war held their husbands hostage so to speak. Only after a few years did our fathers return. This was the story that cemented us. She told the story of pointing to the picture on the mantle when introduced to her father saying, "I want my real daddy". I had a similar story, but I only had a drawing of my father. We both knew well the saying that children should be seen but not heard. Basically, we were silent. We knew more about the great depression than anything else. The relatives we lived with had all lived through the depression. Usually they were silent, too. War and depression will do that to you.
Depends on her circumstance, but the Lost Generation came before the Silent Gen. she might have attributes to both kinda like how young millennials and older gen z have lots of things in common
They sure created a better world for us baby boomers, I was born in 1961. I wish I could turn the clock back to those times, much better than today's world.
to me people born from 1940 to1945 are early baby boomers, because what would the Beatles and Rolling Stones have in common with Neal Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.
@@jiveassturkey8849 we'll make the world a better place because the older generations don't know how to handle us because they think all of us are lazy. Many of us are hard working. Many of us harder working than the silent generation amd baby boomers. In their day one 40 hour income was enough. In our day you almost have to die at work to make a living. If nothing more we will teach our childrens generation right and wrong of politics and it will be them fighting for the rights that we taught them. This way of the elite taking advantage of us will only go on for so long.
No lol, millennials are just continuing what the boomers started, the west is going to fall soon. If you extrapolate from whats going on in Silicon Valley our future is not looking bright. The only decent generation in modern history is the Silent Generation.
@@liquidpuffin5267 to make a living now you need to get a better job, not die at your job (I had to go back to school). You may also consider addressing the view of yourself as a victim of manipulation and oppression by the 'elites' and politics. Let your actions define you not the actions of others.

Hitler was born in the LOST generation, the generation that fought WWI. Einstein was born in 1879, so he’s in the generation before the lost generation, if it has a name, I don’t know it.
