Impactful Pictures is a docu-series celebrating powerful, important movies; their influences and what made them so "impactful".
Episode 4: In this Corner of the World (Kono Sekai No Katasumi ni)
"Set in Hiroshima during World War II, an eighteen-year-old girl gets married and now has to prepare food for her family despite the rationing and lack of supplies. As she struggles with the daily loss of life's amenities she still has to maintain the will to live."
Out of all the movies I've seen in 2017, this is by far one of the most moving ones I've seen. I'm really disappointed this movie didn't get more recognition because it really does stand out from the rest. It's hard to put into words why I was so deeply moved by this picture, but it's definitely something I want more people to experience.
While it's not as traumatizing as Barefoot Gen, I think this movie offers another valuable perspective on the Hiroshima bombing. What else can I say? It's beautifully drawn, you get really attached to the characters and it just reminds you how precious life truly is.
So, yeah, please go see this movie, support the director and his crew, and also let me know what you thought about it!

The thing i loved most about this movie was when the calender was shown moving across the months and they were stuck doing the same thing every single day. Cook, clean, bomb shelter, clean, cook, go to sleep, bomb shelter, etc. It gave you a sense of despair and boredom almost and then one of the most heartbreaking points in the movie comes during one of those monotonous days. But she still has to continue her same routine

@@debeshbhattacharjee3907 The music you can find in the description of the video. It's by a young talented composer called Joachim Heinrich. :) Definitely go check him out - he's composed some amazing pieces!

The Oscars would never understand a movie like this. Or maybe they would if it was a movie and not an anime. In This Corner of the World is a beautiful film. I talk it up to almost everyone I know. You did a good job here, Mike H.

Oscar is an advertising competition not a pure movie competition. In this corner of the world and A silent voice should both be nominated.
@mikeinthemiddle
@mikeinthemiddle 6 лет назад
I agree - the Oscars were never about the best movie of the year, rather which movie had the best campaign. It's sad but true! But in a world where the Oscars would've been about celebrating the best movies worldwide, this one should've been nominated for sure! :)

That was one of the most eloquent reviews of a film I've seen in a while. Great script, points, editing, etc. Frankly I didn't look at your sub or view count until after I watched the video and it caught me off guard. It felt way higher quality than most channels at this early of a point. I knew of this project's existence but never really heard that it was completed. I'll definitely be watching it soon now that I've seen this. A+ video, Mike. You definitely have a future in this youtube category if you keep it up

I’ve watched this film 4 times over the past year and you made me realize why it resonated with me so much. I’m living a verrry different life as a American teenager but I’m using my creativity to escape from my trauma (2020) it’s wild that the idea of daydreaming a better world is timeless so bittersweet it made me sob every damn time it’s a type of soft sadness that I’m way too addicted to, my mundane life took a dramatic turn cause of the pandemic and family problems, so my heart feels heavy even typing this right now but thank you I’m here just looking for more videos to satisfy the lack of love this film receives and only few reviews ever make me emotional I know I’m 4 years late but this meant a lot to me

Fumiyo Kono, the author of the original manga, once talked about her marriage and old-time women in her book titled Heibon Club. She lives with her partner today but they are not officially married. When she was a child, she was adopted by her grandparents cuz they didn't have a legal heir. She thought she was the most unnecessary child to her parents but accepted it. The grandparents' heir became the most important role for her. She met her partner later but he was the oldest brother in his family. He also had to take over his family due to the traditional Japanese family system. They both needed to live for their own family. Her job also disturbed a good married life. He said "It looks like you don't need anything but manga" They decided to break up. She was a bit surprised that she felt so sad at it. She realized that she also had emotion and it is necessary for creating manga. A few years later, he suddenly came to see her and said "I don't say marry me. When you're busy for manga and can't do anything, that's okay." They came to live together without being officially married nor changing her family name. She said, they were under the pressure of traditional Japanese family system but it made them choose de dacto relationship, which is opposite to the traditional family system. I think her history inspired a part of Suzu's character, or Kono's female characters in general. This film criticizes suppression of women but doesn't deny the life of old time women.

What I find cool is that the flak burst are dyed. To the untrained this could be just her imagination, but, for me, I know for a fact the Japanese use dye in their shells to track gunnery. Am not sure if they used it, however, in their flak shells. Been researching it after commenting and I haven't seen anything referencing it. Also, the IJN Aoba is a cool touch.

Yes, you're right. I'm Japanese, and the director of this film clearly mentions many times that the color of the bombs is based on historical fact. translate.google.com/translate?langpair=ja%7Cen&hl=ja&u=diamond.jp/articles/-/110768?page=3

Mike .... thank you very much for your review. You did a great job! In This Corner of the World is, by far, my favorite anime film ever. I fell in love of Suzu since the first time. I admire her fortitude to face the many problems of the life she had to live. But, over any other thing, her tenderness. She is simply adorable! I really enjoyed your video and I think your analysis of this movie is one of the best I have seen (and there are several in RU-vid). I have already shared it with my wife (I think she's a little jealous of Suzu) and with my relatives. I hope it helps me let they know why I enjoy this picture every time I see it (because I see this movie at least once a week since I got it!). I hope one day God forgives the "Academy" for the Boss Baby nomination.... because many of us won't! But fortunally, there are many other Film Festivals and movie experts in the world that reallly know what "art" means. Among many others, In This Corner of the World won the 40th Japan Academy Film Prize for Best Animated Film, the 90th Kinema Junpo Best 10 Award for Best Japanese Film as the second-ever animated film, and the Jury Award at the 41st Annecy International Animated Film Festival, and was nominated for the 45th Annie Award for Best Animated Feature-Independent. On the other hand, Sunao Katabuchi won the Award of the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in Film Category at the 67th Art Encouragement Prize, the 59th Blue Ribbon Award for Best Director as the first-ever animated film director, and the 90th Kinema Junpo Best 10 Award for Best Japanese Film Director as the first-ever animated film director. So... who cares about "Oscar". Thanks again, Mike.... muchas gracias, amigo. Salvador "Chava" García.

Having to follow the stations of the cross of not only history but the anime that inspired it, the story didn't flow the way it otherwise might. The story of and connection with the girl that became the Hiroshima geisha was something we should have seen more of.
