Bayside, Queens, is considered an upper-middle-class neighborhood. By the 1920s it was a favorite of a-list actors like Charlie Chaplin and Rudolph Valentino. Valentino's home still stands, although it was converted into a catering hall.
Bayside is home to Fort Totten, constructed in 1862 to guard the north entrance of New York Harbor. From there you'll see gorgeous views of the Throgs Neck Bridge.
Bayside has mostly quiet tree-lined streets. Tudors, colonials, new mansions -- when it comes to homes, variety is not a problem.
When you hear "Bayside High School," you probably think if the school in the show "Saved by the Bell." But I think "alma mater." The school was established in 1936, and I have to say it hasn't changed a bit since I graduated last year. (That was a joke.)
If you're looking to get to bayside your best bet is a car, but it is easily accessible by a variety of city buses and the lirr.
All Saints Episcopal Church is the oldest house of worship here. It sits just off Bell Boulevard, Bayside's main thoroughfare. The avenue is chock full of quaint shops like Bell Family Jewelers, which has been around since the 1950s. Owner Harry Rutgers says the neighborhood has been good to him.
Barbershop owner David Jacobs says it is a great community and the best neighborhood in Queens.
And finally for a delicious nosh, look no further than Donovan's, which is famous for its chicken pot pie, shepherd's pie, and burgers.
Bayside is a neighborhood with a view.
