The whole Gifted and Talented program is a scam, I tell you. All you get out of it is more work and a social stigma of being one of the "smart/nerdy kids" and then there's no actual end product for doing it. PSEO programs are different and good because you actually get college credits for doing those.

@@phokeydhoo8940 dunno how it is now, I graduated HS back in 2015. but I got stuck with the gifted label in like first grade and it really screwed my experience with school necause children are awful and I was immediately and inexorably othered socially forevermore for being one of the nerds. Also in my professional life after school I have similarly learned to operate at a functional baseline of performance because doing a better job than expected does not incur extra rewards, just an expectation of doing that better job consistently, or the normal level of work faster/with less

​@@Lunageldia I think it's also true that these gifted kids, if not given enough challenge will also not perform to their fullest potential. I think the idea is good but it could definitely be better for sure

@@blahken3126 I'd expand your point by saying that all education should strive to provide a reasonable level of struggle and challenge for each individual child so as to allow them to learn and overcome. The fact is though that not all children exist at the same point in learning at any given age, and the current system of having grades-by-age and pushing them along almost regardless of performance punishes anyone who deviates from the expected level in one direction or another, either intellectually or socially. I have very strong opinions on this topic, which I think is evident in my comments. I'm glad though that there's some thoughtful discourse happening here though. The more people that are thinking about these sorts of things, the better.
