Economist and Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz delivered the inaugural Joseph E. Stiglitz Lecture on Inequality and the Good Society at the University of Notre Dame in April 2024.
During his talk, Stiglitz outlined how powerful interests shape rules that create and sustain inequality, and he called for a people-centered economy as a sustainable alternative that would promote human dignity and flourishing.

Interesting talk ! I think one key reason why there was a great movement of progressive in the early 19th that helped reduce inequality in the US at that time was the rise of communism in Europe that toppled many governments and killed so many elites that it scared the US elites then to the point that they were willing to compromise. The two great wars then decimated so much wealth that 1945-1980 was simply the correction from the low base, plus the ideology fight with the Communists allowed the US progressive movement to have some say. Once the Soviets was done, true capitalists reined supreme again and inequality resumes the growth path til this day. I think the best hope for US inequality correction is probably the rise of China, that could once again scare the US elites enough, to the point that they will allow some more progressive wins.

Politics determines how wealth is distributed within a country, while wars and diplomacy determine how wealth is distributed between countries. Here are the direct results of government policies in the world's most powerful and richest country: Economic inequality, inflation, stagnant real wages for the last fifty years, costly healthcare, an expensive education system, student loan debt totaling $1.7 trillion with an average balance of $38,000, poor public transportation systems, racial inequality, mass incarceration, the militarization of police, deteriorating infrastructure, housing affordability, homelessness, the opioid epidemic, and gun violence.
