REVIEW ON ITALERI KIT #6549, „STEYR RSO/01 WITH GERMAN SOLDIERS AND ACCESSORIES“,
YEAR OF RELEASE: 2017*
(* The year of release is just for this set. Its contents were released before seperately.)
ALL LINKS AT THE END OF THE DESCRIPTION!
Hi guys! A couple of weeks ago I purchased a kit I wanted to build since I switched from 1/72 aircraft to 1/35 armour in 1981: the Italeri RSO/01 (Raupenschlepper Ost/Caterpillar Tractor East)! I built the RSO/03 before, but I always wanted the closed cab type!
It's got a very long history, starting in 1976 with the original release by TOMY. Italeri's first reboxing was released in 1981, the year I first saw it in a model shop - and didn't have enough allowance/pocket money to buy it! Now here's the newest re-release. The kit or set includes 7 figures and accessories. I was quite amazed when I found out that two of the kit's dates are the same as the most important ones in my modeling „career“ and so it seemed to call even louder than before: „Buy me!!!“ By the way, around 1980/81 Italeri also changed the company's name's spelling from ITALAEREI (from ITALIA and AEREI for aircraft in Italian) to ITALERI to make pronouncing the word easier. Somehow it didn't work! Mind your pronunciation! The stress is on the third syllable, hehehe!
If you should ask, why I didn't buy the Dragon RSO/01 which has definitely more and most likely better details, there are two reasons. The first one is that I love old kits like this. There's enough room for scratch building and that's what modeling is about for me. These classic kits can be a lot of fun, depending on their quality. The second reason is that I usually can't afford to buy kits that cost more than 30 €. This was 28.50 €, so it was exactly in my price range. Well, the „famous“ Dragon instructions may have been the third reason, hehehe. Oh, and the Dragon kit wasn't available anyway! Hmmm, that makes FOUR reasons altogether, lol!
EDIT: I found a review in a German modeling magazine and it seems Dragon made some bad mistakes with the measurements, because they used the wrong vehicle ("Gebirgsschlepper"/mountain tractor) which is smaller or at least narrower! If that's true, there are even FIVE reasons not to buy the Dragon kit!
This is my personal point of view, but the vinyl tracks are horrible and they'll go right into the bin. I'll order MasterClub tracks for this kit. They are easy to assemble and they look brilliant with their natural sag. You must think I'm nuts to buy those tracks for an aged kit like this, especially since they cost as much as the kit itself, but that's not the way I (can) calculate the costs. The tracks are necessary for the kit. Without them the project can't be started and doing it this way I can split the costs - and also have much nicer tracks than the Magic Tracks of the Dragon kit! If it still comes with Magic Tracks!
And now let's crack the box open and see what this kit has to offer - apart from the tracks. It comes as a set and that means figures and accessories usually don't belong to this kit. They look nice on the box illustration. Can we talk about new parts then? Well, let's see. I can promise you a real big surprise! And you get two reviews for the price of one! :)

I recently got the Peerles 1978 version and I was wondering if Italeri got more details or at least less sprue and pinmarks...but no! It's exactly the same pieces. The figures on peerles are to...rough and thick...I can't even modify them! 😅 I was wondering how were the figures on the Italeri because in the box art they look very nice, but they were molded exactly as the Peerless ones. Nice review! You inspired me to build and get serious with this little dude. Greetings from Mexico!

Thanks a lot, Diego - especially for taking the time to watch this very long video. I envy you for having the original Peerless kit! Although both kits are identical it's very special to have such an old and still quite nice kit. I wondered if the Dragon kit might be an alternative but it isn't. Dragon used measurements from a different vehicle - the "Gebirgsschlepper" (mountain tractor) - which is smaller, so you wouldn't get the correct vehicle if you bought it. In this case there's no use in the better details. There's a lot that can be done with this kit and it'll look very nice when it's finished. Good luck and a lot of fun! Greetings from Germany, Jens :)

@@non-prolific135thscalemode7 thank you so much for the advice! So I can feel very relaxed for having the right version of the model. I wonder how many years my local store had it even the soft tracks had a film of oil or something haha. I will do my best effort ! 👍

After reading your comment I had to watch my review again, hahaha! The tracks in the Italeri box weren't any better than those you found in the box of your kit and I decided to use metal tracks. I almost ripped of the rear sprocket wheels trying to put on the vinyl tracks on my RSO/03 (also Italeri but a Revell reboxing), so I used Friul tracks instead. Like you I was really glad to have found out that the expensive Dragon kit is wrong, lol! Strange that they made such a silly mistake. :)

@@non-prolific135thscalemode7 I see! I'll try to get those metal tracks then. Thanks for the advice! And yes, it's funny how the old models like Tamiya where pretty decent and were so simple and practical :)

Yes, old Italeri and Tamiya kits are still a lot of fun and a fantastic base for some scratch building and extra detailing. And they're cheap! There are two different sets of metal tracks for the RSO. The Friul tracks I used are item #ATL-29 and the Masterclub tracks I want to use for this kit are item #MTL35066. They look even nicer than the Friul ones. Have a great weekend, my friend! :)

Cool!!! I found a TOMY version (!!!) on eBay USA, but the guy wants 50 bucks! Well, it's almost a collectors' item, isn't it? When I saw the Italeri box with the built model by Verlinden in 1981 I so desperately wanted it, but didn't have the money. Three or four weeks later I had the money, but the kit was out of stock! I always missed it since then!!! The RSO/03 was not what I wanted to have, but it's nice enough. This baby will get all my love and I'll pamper it till it's nice and grown up! :) Talk to you later, dear old friend! Jens

I just came across your review and it helped me decide NOT to buy the ESCI/ITALERI German Rest Camp kit that I nearly got off ebay. I needed figures in that type of setting for a Diorama I'm planning and this was the only kit I could find. Sadly Italeri missed the boat on the figures. They should have made new molds long ago for this set of figures. Sadly I cant find another company making any.

Great inbox review of a kit with some good and some bad points. The one thing that really annoyed me was the fact that it shows the vehicle with the canvas cover in just about every picture, but then in small writing on the box it tells you that it is not included. I will bet a lot of people who bought this kit ended up disappointed because of this. I am sure that a lot of modellers could make a canvas cover, but not everyone and not necessarily with decent results. I love the look of this vehicle, but might consider a different manufacturer?? Many thanks for sharing and I am already looking forward to more of these reviews. Have fun, Joe
@non-prolific135thscalemode7
@non-prolific135thscalemode7 6 лет назад
Thanks a lot, Joe. Yes, along with figures and accessories the missing canvas is annoying. I want to display my RSO open, but many would prefer the canvas top as it looks nice and - quite frankly - saves you some stowage items that also cost money. The kit itself is nice. Nice for those who have the courage to add scratch built details. A different manufacturer? The only one I know of is Dragon. If they didn't change the features of the kit it comes with Magic Tracks which is very nice, but as you know they removed them from many kits and replaced them with DS tracks. If you watched Coen's video in which he has shown two rather new unused sets that crumbled and fell to pieces you can imagine that I wouldn't use them. Well, I don't use any vinyl or other band tracks, but that's my personal preference. The Dragon kit was out of stock here, but it would have been to expensive for me anyway. There will be more reviews and I guess I'll start with the old Tamiya GAZ jeep. That's another kit I always wanted to build and it'll go along with the almost finished T-34 on the Kursk dio I started in 2016! I'm way too fast for most other modelers, hahaha! Take care, Jens

I could do without the figures and Hamilkar Barkas wasn't too wrong when he said I could have looked for the kit on eBay, but I thought Italeri had added new figures. They never mentioned they packed these Neandertals with it! :) I'll work my way through me ref pics and see what I can and what I can't do. A good and honest review of this plucky little utility vehicle, I once had the original Italeri kit of the Steyr Tractor and wish I'd never traded it off for something else! Always thought the photo on the box top was of the actual thing, silly me! The figures in this re-released kit are really showing their age....I'd pitch them and find nicer ones from Alpine Miniatures!

Thanks a lot, Max! This is a real classic kit I wanted to have since 1981. It's much better than many modelers may think. And the Dragon kit is no alternative, since they used the wrong vehicle for their measurements (Gebirgsschlepper - mountain tractor). That tractor is smaller and I can't understand how they could make that mistake. I gave the old ESCI figures to a friend of mine, because he wanted to find out what he could do with them. Haven't heard of him for a while now. I hope he still is my friend! Greetings from Germany! :) Jens

I started into armour modeling with - then new - Italeri and Tamiya kits in 1981 and although I like Tamiya kits I must admit that I love the old Italeri ones. Great amount of detail for that period and I'm always willing to do some extra detailing to take them to a higher level . In case I can get one! I really love their Dodge WCs and my favourite is the ambulance. Next time they do one of their "limited editions" I'll buy three or four of them. There's always use for it. :)

Honest and fair review of the kits. The RSO is a classic kit...even with the terrible tracks. Recently I had to actually sew together a set of tracks!!!! In depth review and I see the kit hasn’t changed since the two I aquired years ago... one was from a sale bought for 2 shekels... not much to pay, but many parts were missing and the tracks were just awful.. I gave to it to friends son, who had fun building it. The second was a gift of the version with the Pak 40.. sadly this was no better... flash, mould missaligned, huge seams... just too much work... so I also gave it away... now I have the AFV Pak 40 and the Dragon RSO.. so so so much better and neither cost me much at all.

Thanks for watching! Glad I could help you make a decision. Well, I like the kit, but was very disappointed about figures and accessories. The tracks, oomph.... But you shouldn't judge Italeri from this kit because a) it's a reboxing of an unchanged 1976 TOMY kit and b) it's one of the rare re-releases many older modelers like me are waiting for every year. They do their own kits and the newer ones are at a higher standard. Of course they're not Dragon or MENG and you should look for a good review before you buy one, but they aren't as expensive either. If it's worth the money to buy the Dragon RSO/01 instead? I don't know, because I don't know the kit. According to my friend Hamilkar Barkas it isn't. :)

Actually, the RSO kit was first issued by Peerless/MAX in about 1075-6 if memory serves. Either way I had one and mine came with a Nebulwaffer kit too !!! And crew !!! They would have been great figures for the time. If they weren't short shorts ! And they are in 54mm I think ? Nebulwaffer wasn't bad. Italiari released it in the 80's along with all the trailer and water trailer kits. Then Testors began marketing their kits in the U.S. The RSO/3 kit you have was shown in the boxart of the Peerless/MAX kits but company folded without releasing it. In fact it never appeared until the kit you have with the PaK 40 by Italiari. I have that same set of ESCI figures. I never noticed that about them ??? But I did use one of the figures. I used it in two different dioramas with the same Panzer I command tank ! First one was the officer from the tank talking over a map and him pointing the opposite direction ! Second was tank and group of Germans with a French officer who is telling them how the mighty French Army won the last war all by themselves and are about to get beat again. The Feldpolice man is telling him to go with him and about to poke him in the ribs with his Bergman ... I used one of those helmets but rebuilt it into a WWI pattern. Once cleaned up it wasn't a bad figure. New heads would help but I found the bodies over sized. I've found many uses for the boxes. They don't have wood grain because they are pine and cleanly cut. No grain shows. Damn it !!!!!! 😧

You can look it up on Scalemates, Ennis. First release was by TOMY. Peerless/Max is a reboxing. I put the link at the end of my description. Will anybody ever read them, hahaha? It's the first time this kit is released with these figures and I didn't see any pics of the sprues before I unboxed mine. Jeez! What a bad surprise! I hoped for new figures! I wouldn't have expected that. Well, I wanted the kit anyway, so be it! I built the Revell Germany reboxing of the RSO/03 and I'm sure it wasn't Italeri styrene, because that stuff was very brittle. Nice one on the crates, hahahaha!!! The ice cleats are part of this kit for the first time as far as I know. That's why they added the RSO/03 sprue. I won't use them, because my little RSO will be deployed in Italy. Better weather, more sunshine, nicer food... You may be right about the size of the figures! My first figures were ESCI German Assault Troops in 1981 and they were nice back then. Take care, Jens

Non-Prolific 1/35th Scale Model Builder Yes, you're correct. I didn't read that information. I checked it out and I'm afraid I disagree. My kit was the one with both the Nebulwaffer and crew. I don't know anything about the TOMY kit. Those were few and far between in my part of the world. Peerless/MAX or MAX or Peerless , it depended on the box ! I have some modeling magazines from back then and I'll let you know about what I find. Besides I lived in a different city in '78 than in '76. I've got my instructions !!!!!! Maybe they have a date? Now see what you've done ? I won't be able to rest until I settle this !!! Damn! LMAO !!!!!!

Quite frankly, I never heard of TOMY before I looked up the history of this kit. Your RSO with Nebelwerfer is the exact same kit. I missed the Nebelwerfer so many times that I'll buy two or three of them the next time Italeri re-release it. I saw very nice builds by Francois Verlinden and if you keep the age of the kit in mind the quality is almost outstanding. I tried to find some information on TOMY but to no avail. There's a Japanese toy company of that name but I doubt they're the same. I wasn't able to find any information on ESCI figures other than 1/72 so I guess they weren't too successful back then. It won't hurt you to do a little research, ROFL!!!

The scale of the italeri kit is NOT 1/35 it is 1/32 or bigger. You can tell by the size of the figures. If you compare Tamiya and Italeri figures. It is also written on the Internet that the scale is too large.

This is the reason that i have come looking for a review of these figures. Esci originally released these figures with their German Horse Drawn Convoy kit. Italeri released the German Horse Drawn Convoy kit that didn't include these figures which is the one that I bought. Upon opening the box I noticed the size of the wagon drivers and they are huge for 1/35, so huge that using them with any other 1/35 scale figures would look silly so I was trying to find out if the "German Rest Camp" figures were actually larger than 1/35 and you have answered my question, thanks.

Nice review. Those figures....... Sort of chunky 1960s toy soldiers !! Maybe salvage their boots and bin the rest ! Cheers.

Thanks a lot, mate! Funny you should mention the boots! I looked at the pics again and the same thought came to mind. The MiniArt Feldgendarmerie set could use them and if the shoe sizes aren't too far apart I guess I'll try my luck at a bit of frankensteining, hehehe!

Nice review jens. As bad as those figures are for flash and details I think they will be nice with a bit of work. The faces don't look as bad as some even if there are a couple of twins in there lol . Why they would have the hands joined to the sprue is beyond me though! Be hard to tidy up! Equipment looks very poor though!

Non-Prolific 1/35th Scale Model Builder that's awfully nice of you my friend. You really don't have to though you'd have to pay for postage. Hey have you had the master box german paratroops before? Think they are going to be my next purchase

I wasn't kidding, Jack. Postage in Germany isn't as expensive as it is in the UK. If you'd like to have them I'll send them this week. ) No, I haven't built any Fallschirmjäger since I last built the old Italeri Schwimmwagen and that was probably 35 years ago. I guess the MasterBox figures are much nicer, hehehe!

Mal sehen, was Jack daraus macht.

@non-prolific135thscalemode7
@non-prolific135thscalemode7 6 лет назад
