as a buddhist person this movie was really scary because it subverted a lot of religious symbols ! it borrows from conventional imagery in tibetan buddhism, esp. that scene in the temple where the ceiling mural had a blacked out face. this is called a thangka, and they usually serve as teaching tools depicting the life of the buddha, influential lamas (spiritual leaders) and other deities. some deities (particularly wrathful deities) in buddhism have multiple arms and are surrounded by severed heads (symbolic of their purpose in destroying obstacles to enlightenment), but the one at 6:46 is particularly disturbing esp. because it has a crown of other buddha heads (the other conventional representations of the buddha) with eyes closed (implying the death of 'good/conventional buddhism' in this cult) AND is accompanied with a baby; i think as a buddhist person, it cleverly foretells the child sacrifice aspect of the film, especially for discerning buddhist viewers. so many easter eggs :D

one of the biggest scare from this plot is that Ruonan was actually trying to sacrifice her own daughter at first because of the terrors she faced even in the psych ward, the mother buddha tortures her to give her daughter's real name (aka sacrificing her), that's why in the ending she said please forget her real name.

Honestly was spooked for half the movie until the mc did something she shouldn't have, considering how close she is to be freed from evil. Then I just can't get over how stupid she was. Throughout I just kept thinking she deserved it and it didn't spook me anymore 😂

Ruonan's initial intention for adopting back her daughter was to sacrifice her daughter to the diety in order to save herself from the curse. This kind of sacrifice was carried out by the villagers to the young girl in the beginning of the show. Ruonan did not adopted her daughter out of love. This is also why the daughter found the girl by the roadside and why Ruonan cut off the girl's ear. However, after living with her daughter for sometime, she realises that she has developed her motherly love for her daughter and decided to sacrifice herself to save her daughter.

I watched this movie with my boyfriend (he is Chinese) and even though it was scary for me and really liked the movie, he told me that all of the symbols that are subverted in the movie is what really got him. Like, all of the things that are supposed to protect them from evil forces are the things that actually hurt you in this movie. So I think that as western people, we lack the cultural background to really appreciate all of the symbolism behind it, because at the end, they grow up with it. It reminded me as when we were watching the Exorcist and the Omen and he thought they weren't as scary, but I think it was because he doesn't know of all of the Christianity's symbolism behind those movies. This is not a critic, but more of something that I noticed and I think is very interesting.

After watching this movie, the one thing that freaked me out from this movie is when honestly I can't tell if the mantra chanting is real or not irl... when Rounan starts getting the audience to recite the mantra and memorize the symbol, reciting it wasn't the issue since I'm just watching it and not giving a damn, but the fact she said you can recite the mantra with "your mind" if you don't want to be vocal, lol...I started talking gibberish to myself as loud as possible as the mantra is being recited so that I keep my mind occupied from thinking those mantra....hell naw i'm not gonna get cursed unnecessarily....otherwise the movie is totally awesomeee

I really like the final scene where she uncovers the Budha's face, that was very disturbing.

This is the kind of feverish dream-like movie that I love watching reviews on. The quick jokes you do also make videos much more enjoyable to watch as they don't feel forced at all. Glad to have you back man.

the movie was so disturbing to me but mainly because i just hate seeing holes. other than that, it was fairly predictable and i believe that the 55% scare score was warranted. so glad to have finally watched this review from you!

I was so excited when this made its way on Netflix but I was a little sad they couldn't edit that final slide show of mesmerizing message of the big plot twist into different languages, to see that in Chinese and each character in the center slowly spelling out that sentence and the whole truth is really beyond words, bone chilling to say the least. the whole iconigraphy of those searing words into the back of your mind, can't escape even if you close your eyes was AMAZING, too bad other people had to go back and forth while reading the subtitles, really wish they had customized that part for different languages for the full effect

this guy is too funny and underrated

I absolutely love this movie. The narrative style is really cool and this movie doesnt spoonfed you and really trust you to put the pieces together. It's one of the best thing I've watched this year.

this is honestly the only horror film I find unsettling and chaotic. found footage + tones of gore and curses and it honestly leaves some sort of presence

first movie to scare me in years. I really felt like she cursed me at the end I was like great, thanks. very realistic because I know they based it on real things.

The movie was quite scary to me ( haven't watched horror movies in a while) especially the ending scene. I skipped the parts with the actual movie because it's night here and I would start imagining things. It's good to here your voice and it's good to be back here. To many more videos 🥂

This movie, amazingly, has you invested in the characters as well as their fate, while simultaniously throwing chunks of uneasiness and upcreeping terror at you every few minutes. I was terrified watching it the first time, while my mum shed a tear when Ronan talked about trying to become a good mother to Dodo. I wish I could have seen it in a cinema tho.

It had an awesome buildup and the twist shook me to my core. I grew up in a community with mainly Buddhist beliefs so this creeped me tf out. I watched this with my siblings and cousins during Halloween and now they can't stop chanting and doing the hand symbols. Freaks me out everytime lmfao 😭😂

Also the time jump doesn't work with this genre and actually made me confused at the first time yet the story is quite simple but the way they told the story, it's like watching Christopher Nolan's movie. It was okay, not that scary but quiet creepy at some moments.
