Inception - What do Dreams Sound Like?

Hans Zimmer's score for Christopher Nolan's 2010 psychological thriller, Inception, was perfectly placed to explore the many layers within Nolan's story. Zimmer was able to realise the sound of dreams in music, but was also able to tell a story that bound Cobb and Mal together across time. In this essay, I look at how Zimmer uses a simple chord sequence, usually played by two violins, to do this.

Hi everyone! If you liked this one, do take a look at my analysis of Zimmer's score for 'Interstellar': ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n6HtAu0fNQ4.html. Also, if you'd like to support my work, visit my Patreon account here: www.patreon.com/listeningin

Your videos on movies and the hidden messages in music are amazing. Please consider doing more long form videos on this and other subjects. The videos on lord of the rings, inception, and interstellar could have been an hour long and I would have enjoyed every minute. The only question is- do you have that much to say? Thanks for what you do. Its beautiful.

I'll never forget the final notes to Time at Zimmer's live concert, or rather the moments inbetween them, they seemed so long and quiet in a hall with thousands of people listening without breathing.

Inception really was one of those rare films that I couldn't help but saying 'wow' after watching. I had heard loads of hype around it but nothing about the story and it felt just as original to me as I hoped it would be. Thanks for the quick episode, simple musical observations like this sometimes pass me by but when I discover them it definitely enriches my experience!

It's kind of astonishing just how evocative those 4 chords are..... It's so simple, but it sounds ancient...primordial...like it always existed and was somehow discovered. Four chords....that's all really. But within that simple turnaround I hear so much depth. For whatever reason...that theme often makes me feel a sense of profound nostalgia and kinship with, specifically, the entirety of the human story over the 20th century. Everything that happened...every war...every person...every romance...every birth and death....everything. The Sigur Ros song played in the final scene of Vanilla Sky has a similar effect on me. I love it when music can convey SO much with so very little...

Once again great work! Time is one of my favorite scores in Inception because it really is a melody that has slowly been trying to grow but can’t because Mal part is always keeping it from doing so but finally in the end we hear the theme finally be able to finish in the end because nothing is holding it back.

Until the film, Tenet, this had been my favorite Nolan film. Of course, they are all magnificent, but something about the dreams within a dream hit to my very core. The soundtrack is still one I'll play randomly and lose myself in the idea that maybe I am just dreaming and my day will change once I awake. The film is brilliant at every turn. "Time" is music of reality. One small detail that you can see when watching this scene, is that the totem is beginning to topple as it spins, which is a sign of it losing momentum, that indicates it's a reality.

Listening In: Love your channel and educational interpretations on some of my favorite scores; just found/subscribed today! Was curious to hear your thoughts/analysis on why Henry Jackman's ending track "Safe Now" from Captain Phillips (2013) is almost *identical* to Zimmer's "Time." Maybe a slightly different key, but sounds like same chord progression and rising emotional build. How is this possible? Is it plagiarism or an homage to the Z-Master?
