The ruins of Inchmahome Priory grace the largest of three islands in the Lake of Menteith. The priory was established around 1238 by a small community of Augustinian canons. Their founder and patron was Walter Comyn, Earl of Menteith, whose residence stood on the adjacent island of Inch Talla. The secluded location offered the brethren isolation from the secular world, and tranquillity in which to carry out the worship of God.
The island sanctuary functioned for over 300 years, offering solace not only to the canons but also royal visitors. King Robert Bruce visited three times, and Mary Queen of Scots once, in 1547, when she was five. In 1560, the Reformation effectively brought monastic life at Inchmahome to an end.
There are also some interesting old trees on the island.
Finally a look at Port of Menteith church with the swallows gathering before migrating.
Music by Phil Coulter.

The Graham Earls of Menteith were my direct ancestor grandfathers. They’re a proud lineage that includes King Robert the Bruce and King Robert the Second, founder of the House of Stuart. I’d love to visit the island when I’m in Scotland. So much family history to explore. Beautiful video.

Walter Bailloch "Walter the Freckled" Stewart, Earl of Menteith, is my 24th paternal grandfather. He later took on the surname Menteith from his wife, Mary of Perthshire. His great-grandfather, Walter Fitz Alan (1st High Steward of Scotland) was the progenitor of Clan Stewart. This is why the Clan Stewart coat of arms and Clan Menteith coat of arms are nearly identical.

Also Robert I is my 23rd step great grandfather. My 15th great grandfather married Robert I's 6th great granddaughter.

Apparently, according to my Mum, whose maiden name was Jean Graham Graham, our family is descended from the Grahams of Menteith.

Shouldn't it be the "Loch" of Menteith? Lakes are in America!

And England! It was called Loch of Menteith until the 19th century. It is not exactly known why the name change to lake.
