Making spares in bowling don't have to be difficult -- you just need a system. I'm USBC Certified Silver Coach Arthur O'Connor, and in this video I show you how to implement a spare system that works for me. Please like, leave a comment, and subscribe for more tips and tricks on improving your bowling score. Thanks for watching, and see you on the lanes!

The method you taught me a few years ago was to move 3/6/9 based on where you line up for a strike shot. That method worked for the most part, but I still struggled with it because it really depends on the pattern you're bowling on. You're never going to become a good spare shooter when you're shooting spares differently on every shot. Good to see a method that's applicable to all lane conditions. I appreciate this!

I use a slightly different 3-6-9 strategy from yours. All of my spare shots are based off of the 15 board or thereabout, depending on lane conditions. I have bowled on conditions where even a plastic ball will hook, so the target maybe slightly left or right of the 15 board. That’s something that you determine during your warmup shots. Also, I use my regular ball for spares on the left side of the lane (I’m right handed) and the plastic ball for the right side of the lane. For the 7 pin, my left toe is on the 20 board and I shoot over the 15 board. For the 4 pin, I move 3 boards left and shoot the same 15 board. For the 2 or 8 pin, 3 boards left again and same board. Shooting the 10 pin, my left toe is on the 38 board and the target is the 15 board. For the 6 pin, move 3 boards left and same target. For the 3 or 9 pin, 3 boards right (32 board) and same target. This is the system my coach taught me years ago (before all the USBC levels) and I’ve used it ever since. In fact, back then, I used the same ball for everything. We didn’t use plastic back then. 😁

This is a very interesting technique that I will have to try. I am quite the novice bowler, but, I have become pretty good at picking up spares with my plastic ball (get a lot of practice since I don't make so many strikes). To this point my technique has been super simple, especially for single pin spares. I simply line up my feet about 6 boards left of the arrow of the board that my pin is on and throw straight down the arrow board. Rarely miss. I see a lot of the pros in various videos using something like this 3-6-9 though, and I have wondered what they were doing, now I know. Thanks Arthur !! .. you're the greatest!

@@ArtOfBowling - Thank you for the very kind words coach! .. I like to learn new things (and they say you can't teach an old dog new tricks .. HA!) .. The reason I got back into bowling, after a nearly 40 year absence, well, first was for something my wife and I could do together, but, the reason why I now have 5 bowling balls and all the gear (after just 4 months of playing) is because I am fascinated by all of the new "science" behind it all. Back in the day (early 80's) I don't think there was quite as much "science" to it all. You threw a rock down the lane and hoped for the best. At least that's the way it seemed to me then. Now, look out! .. there's plastic, urethane, reactive, solid, pearl, symmetric, asymmetric, oil patters, yadda yadda yadda. Well, for me this just fascinates me and so I try to learn what it's all about. Someone like you has lived through the progression of ALL of this stuff and has gained invaluable knowledge as to "why" all of these things, and, what works and what doesn't work. Let's be honest, there are all sorts of myths out there of what works and what doesn't. Just like golf, there is no "magic" to it, it is physics and biomechanics. I became pretty darned good at golf (set a couple course records) because I learned to differentiate between myth and physics. To me, you concentrate on the physics and how to get ones body to perform as consistently repeatably to those physics (if that makes sense). There must be a learned reason for using the 3-6-9 technique. Even if my "straight" technique works for me, I still want learn the 3-6-9 technique and learn the "why". To me, this is the fun part. Perhaps this is why I have thought nothing about hitting 5,000 golf balls a day training with video, launch monitors, etc ... Bowling is doing the same thing to me .. drives my wife nuts .. hahaha! .. Keep up the fantastic stuff coach .. I am reviewing some of your older videos (as you can see) .. and it's all just pure gold!

I stand on the left-most dot for the 10 pin, and move 3 right for every pin to the left, but if I aim at 4th arrow I don't make the spare, and by the 7 pin I'm practically all the way to the right; advice?

The 3 6 9 system is pretty inexact, don't you think? If you were to throw the ball straight, you would miss to the left.
@MikeDCWeld
@MikeDCWeld Год назад
You seem to have "straight" conflated with "parallel." The ball is traveling on a straight line from the foul line to the pin deck. The 3-6-9 system gets you lined up so that the line of travel is at the correct angle on the lane and takes the gutter out of play.
@MikeDCWeld
@MikeDCWeld Год назад
Is there actually any real benefit to throwing a plastic ball versus throwing your reactive ball straight?
@TheGeniusHaileyPerlstein
@TheGeniusHaileyPerlstein Год назад
Yes there is a benefit to throwing plastic balls. What I do is throw my plastic ball for the right side shots. And for the left side I hook at them because it is just easier and more accurate. They say that throwing straight at spares are more accurate, but as a pro, I’ve seen many bowlers such as myself be able to hook at the left side spares and make them most of the time, if not all the time. Hope this helps. 😊
@MikeDCWeld
@MikeDCWeld Год назад
@@TheGeniusHaileyPerlstein are you throwing the plastic ball straight or just with less hook? And do you use the same release you do on your strike shots or do you adjust it to take revs off the ball? You didn't explain what the benefit actually is in your reply.

A plastic ball isn't necessarily required, but it will allow you to take lane conditions out of play and not have to alter your hand when throwing the ball, so it helps a lot. But again, it's not necessary required. EJ Tacket is a great example, he throws his reactive ball at his spares but he flattens his wrist and doesn't put any revs on the ball. It's a lot easier to use plastic and throw normally
@MikeDCWeld
@MikeDCWeld Год назад
@@CMonKeY135 only if you're not already hooking plastic with your normal release. It's just as easy for me to throw my reactive ball straight as it is to throw a plastic ball straight. I primarily use my T-Zone for the right side corner pins thrown backup ball. Everything else I either hook to or throw straight with my reactive ball.

3-6-9 method does not work mathematically. It can get you in "the ball park," but it is not precise by any means. I used this method for years until I sat down and did the math and geometry. There is a much more precise method. Look up "beyond the basics of bowling." They have a whole chapter, including debunking the 3-6-9 method and proof of why it doesn't work.
