Student movements have an essential role and democratic function in contemporary politics, and in a society’s struggle for democracy and human rights.
Over the last years, we have witnessed a continuation of attacks on higher education along with a shrinking space for civil society. With increasing restrictions on academic freedom and university autonomy, students face violent repression by means such as persecution, torture, arrests, expulsions and even killings.
Students must be acknowledged as human rights defenders, so that their voices can be heard for what they are, not as “dangerous rebels or terrorists”, a label given by many authorities today.
