Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods on the East Coast of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. Fantastic! Cut a couple more notches in the ladder a foot lower. then you can lift it up and hang it flat against the wall when you aren't using it.

Yes. That’s what I was thinking, so now they are only 85% complete with this project. They need a safety rail with grab handles and lighting… Personally I would have made the ladder longer. It have reached or longer then the floor in the loft.

That was my thought when they were making the first notch. A lot of small spaces/tiny homes do that. I can see them getting aggravated by running into it and/or tripping over it. You gals (Crystal) did a great job!

Looks beautiful, maybe a light and one more thing that might be super functional. It may not look great but a handle at the top so that when someone has gotten to the top they can pull them selves up safely ......more importantly, when someone is coming down they have something to hold on to until they get to the ladder rungs. I love it.

Love the attic bedroom. I would suggest adding some grabber arms somewhere for someone to hold onto when they go up and down. Safety! Just some bars on either side in order to help break a posisble fall or slide off (slippery socks) down the ladder. Just a thought :)

You could add another indentation at the top of the ladder (a little lower than the one already done) and then You could hang the ladder vertically (on the new indent) so it doesn't take up space when you're not using it

Suggest some grab handles on the ceiling or side wall of the new bedroom nook, to steady oneself as you leave the ladder. Also perhaps a dedicated bed cover - things get dusty and if you can just pull off the bed cover (a large sheet) then the bed is instantly ready for guests.

The angle was out because the angle of the upright changes when you cut the angle on the bottom. The cut shortens the upright moving the upright closer to the wall changing the angle. Love what you two manage to do, looks amazing!

If you build some safety rails on either side of the ladder opening, you will have something to grab when you get to the top, and when you start down. That would make it MUCH safer.

Crystal using her leg as a saw horse? Good god lady! The loft looks amazing! Reminds me of a little cabin I rented. The bed was in a loft just like that..only there was only enough room for a mattress and it was terribly claustrophobic despite sky windows. It was scary getting up to pee in the middle of the night. Maybe install some lights for your guests. Also extending the ladders hand rails past the floor or having something to hang onto as they put feet on ladder will help.

Awesome job, would recommend that you put a ceiling vent in as it is a small area. Heat rises and it can get quite stuffy up there.

You guys are incredible. The only thing I could think of is to build a couple handles out of that same metal on both sides so somebody can grab onto it when they’re coming into the little area or grab it when they’re getting on the ladder for more security.

That loft bedroom is soooooo cosy. I love it. Just get a rechargeable light and a hook on the wall in case any guest wants to read a book.

I have a ladder to my loft but the last two steps at the bottom were attached with hinges so that you can fold them back and the ladder sits flat against the wall when not in use. It is secured at the top with door hinges so it hangs in place against the wall.

Need small grab bars for the loft entry. Similar to the ones used in bathrooms. Might prevent a serious fall while climbing up, and down at the top of the loft. Great job girls!!

If you make the holes that are there for hanging the ladder further down, then you can also hang the ladder and have a little more space. I would of course attach a buffer to the wall at the bottom so that the ladder doesn't always scrape against the wall. But otherwise very well done, this is a bed in heaven! Cool!

Hanging the ladder will be nice, so as to not loose floor space, but I'd do it different than suggested. Make or find a space on your wall where you can hang it when no in use. Also some lights would be nice too, esp when you have to get up in the middle of the night to go pee! LOL Some sturdy hand rails at the top, so when you get to the top, you have something to hang onto. I wouldn't really call it a room, but, a place to sleep, for sure. Great job ladies.

Ladies, you could easily provide the little attic bedroom with all manner of small closets. Just tuck in mini-closets between your rafters, behind the drywall you just put up.

#Crystal be awesome. Jazmyn also be awesome. Love the idea of using your ladder as a tool to figure out the angle for the build. IDEA!!...it might be a good idea to put some type of rail on either side of the ladder at the top to give yourselves something to grab onto when getting off or on the ladder. You could also add a light at the end of the bedroom with a switch near the front so it's not so dark up there. Anyway, you all did a very nice job on the drywall and floor. And, as usual, it was nice seeing the fur babies doing their usual great job of supervising. So, love you all; get some rest and can't wait to see the next project. Bernie ❤

I would love to see you add wind turbines in addition to the solar array. When the sun goes down, generally, the wind comes up. It would be beneficial for dull days where there is not a lot of sun.

@@Vanwives I find that Vertical Axis turbines are superior to Horizontal turbines. You can either incorporate them into your battery bank or mount them on the greenhouse, storage shed, or any of your buildings independently and hook them up to a dedicated battery. You'll probably need a 50 amp charge controller. I was going to put them on the camper for power on the go!

If you duplicate the ladder hanging notches a bit further down you can hang the ladder so it lays flat against the wall when you don’t need it.

Bless you, Jasmine. Secret door, wow, I guess I missed that in the post of pictures. Beautiful. You might add some rubber strips to the bottom of the legs of the ladder. Just to keep them from sliding around when the latters in use. Love the idea of notching the ladder another foot down to hang it flat on the wall when not in use. If you want to hide the handle for your secret door then use a magnetic push closure like they use on kitchen cabinets. You simply push on it and it springs out to open. Love ya Pack Attack.

Two nice grab bars on either side of the ceiling at the entrance of the loft was my instant thought. I called it in my head that you were going to do this the minute I saw the loft ages ago. I work with tyres and big racks shifting loads by hand on a platform ladder, and you always want three points of contact when you're climbing. Esp. when you're at the top leaving the ladder. (The ladder is lovely btw) Top is the danger tip-over or over-balance point. Put in something to grab at that point 😀.Kudos ladies, you've made an amazing space and you make me smile every week!

For the ladder to get the correct angle you can measure the height for every 4 feet high it’s 1 foot out. 4:1 ratio this was drilled into my mind as a trades worker. It’s a good rule to follow whenever you use a ladder. You should put a handle on the wall in the loft on the left side with the galvanized pipe Other than that great job!!!!

Beautiful ladder, really like the design with the metal bar. You could add similar metal bars on the top part of the ladder to hold on to when you climb. Two vertical bars on the left and right side.

Looks great. I would cut the legs off of the bed frame so the mattress can lay a little lower to give more head room especially if you have 2 people in that tight space.
