This was an INCREDIBLE day and NIGHT of rockhounding all through the mine spoils and beaches of Michigan. We found SUCH a variety of things including chlorite replaced garnets, celestine crystals with calcite, pyrite (or chalcopyrite), staurolite, black tourmaline, serpentine, yooperlites (fluorescent sodalite), a few fossils and a ton of other incredible things. I have to say, just because of the sheer variety of things found and the intensity of this adventure, it has to be one of my favorites yet.

Hi! At 24:30 you were wondering what the blue glowing Rock is and my wife loves collecting those on our Sodalite hunts. That mineral is called Feldspar and you've probably seen some that glow purplish as well as blue, very cool! When you were at the creek and right before you found the unakite, that red velvet glow on the stones was algae, it's weird but algae glows red under UV light

those arent aquamarines. ive rockhounded in northern Michigan. If there were aquamarine laying around like that, the place would be swamped with prospectors staking claims.

Could be the chitin in the spider's exoskeleton causing it to glow under UV light. In fact, that's one of the easiest ways of finding hornworms on tomato plants before they get too big to do too much damage - go out in the garden after dark with a UV light and the caterpillars on the plants fluoresce a bright green. Edit to add: Chlorophyll definitely does fluoresce red under UV light. That's why the moss and lichen on the rock looked red when you shone the light on it them! (I'm a botanist and used UV light in my research student.)

The blue crystals are not kyanite. Kyanite forms in metamorphic rocks which isnt what you are digging in. The rock looks like a dolostone and limestone, which explains the pyrite, fluorite and calcite crystals. The lime green mineral is likely part of the serpentine group of minerals and could be a number of minerals. The black shiny rock is schist. If you have anything else rock and mineral related, I am happy to assit.
