Incredible Scenic Beartooth Highway - Long Version - between Montana and Wyoming
“The most beautiful road in America” was coined by the late Charles Kuralt to describe this outstanding 67-mile corridor crossing the top of Montana and Wyoming. The highway opened in 1936 and was declared impossible to build by many engineers.
The Beartooth Highway is listed as a National Scenic Byways All-American Road. The highway is the quickest route between Red Lodge, Montana and Cooke City, Montana near the northeast entrance to Yellowstone National Park.
At 10,947 feet above sea level (that’s over two miles high), the road is the highest elevation highway in the Northern Rocky Mountains. It is closed from mid-October to late May because of snow on the roadway, some years over 20 feet deep!
Be prepared for adverse conditions in the summertime since winds can blow over 100 MPH and 70-degree days can plummet to below freezing during sudden snowstorms!
This sequence was captured with three cameras: a GoPro Hero2 and Hero3 Black, and a Canon Vixia HFS-100 camcorder. Editing was accomplished with Adobe Premier Pro.

A great, very scenic byway. I rode from Yellowstone NP to Sturgis in 2012 on my Harley and it was a once-in-a-lifetime route for me!

My wife and I have always said this is our favourite road, we live in Wales UK and used to travel around America extensively on a Harley. Thanks for the Video. I did this drive a week ago from Red Lodge to the North Entrance of Yellowstone. A video can not provide the true experience, and how scary the drive actually is. If you start in Red Lodge, once you start the switchbacks and until you reach the summit, it is white knuckle driving. I am not at all comfortable with heights, and when you are on the outside, with sheer cliffs straight down, it was unnerving. But we did it, and are sooo happy we did. It's the most beautiful scenery I have ever scene, even though it was scary.
@davidegg22
@davidegg22 3 года назад
Great comment Stephen. Yes, the road can be unnerving. I myself was taken back when I walked towards the side of the hill to capture the lakes below me. I just had a funny feeling that I was on top of the world looking down. I also am not fond of heights but knew I may never return so I had to force through the fear and walk towards the edge. It wasn’t like I was going to fall off that rounded hill or,anything, it’s just that the air was thin and I couldn’t see the ground very far in front of me. Well, we both survived and we now can talk about it! Glad you made the trip and viewed this video. We both will have happy memories for a long, long time. Happy exploring! Dave in western Montana.

We all should enjoy the beauty that surrounds us. Sometimes we just need to travel a bit to find what we’re looking for. It’s awesome that you two could take a road trip, even if only for a week. It’s what makes those life-long memories! Yes, I am blessed by living in western Montana nestled between Glacier National Park and Yellowstone NP. Glacier is a three hour drive and the Old Faithful Lodge in YNP is a five hour drive. Unfortunately, some of these parks are being loved so much it is hard to get around by car. I am prone to take the roads less traveled. My RU-vid channel has a lot of video of ghost towns, just the opposite of the crowds of people in the national parks. Thanks for the chat and maybe another road trip is in your future. Do stay safe with the hurricane bearing down on you tonight. It looks bad while watching Lonny Quinn on CBS. Dave.

Only drove this once, would have been about June 1st 1975, it had been open from winter for a week or so, in places there were 8 foot tall vertical walls of snow at the edge of pavement where they cut through with snowblowers.

You're welcome. The winters here on the coast are pretty mild - very different than places I have lived before! But this winter saw snow on the ground for almost two months! That's a lot for here. Regardless, I'm ready for spring too. I'm welcoming the longer days and look forward to the world coming into bloom and getting out hiking! Spring has always been a favourite time of mine.

davidegg22 👍 I should add if you stand in the middle of the highway at the precise summit at 10947ft with a GPS receiver set to decimal degrees it will read 109.47122 degrees west. Do a google search on that number for some fun. Then look again at the highway just below the summit to the north. The highway could only follow one path, a precise land bridge carved by water. Thanks again for the stunning video!

davidegg22 simply put, that is the number on which the universe is built. Pretty cool. Author Robert Pirsig in a very famous philosophy book called Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance crossed the pass in the summer of 1968 on a Honda Motorcycle. On the way up the mountain he said “in the high country of the mind one has to become accustomed to the thinner air of uncertainty.” He didn’t know about the geometric alignment I mentioned but his words seem to fit. Be sure to have a GPS receiver with you the next time you go there. 😊

David, Once again you bring the beauty of US highways to all of us. We did this road a couple of years ago and are slowing down.. I am in my eighth decade and am no longer able to keep up with the big boys. We've done a third of a million miles in our housecar(s) over most of the roads in the USA, many familiar to you. You make it possible for others to share in the splendor of what this country has to offer. I have two suggestions when you come south. Utah Highway 12 has the unique distinction of having sheer drop-offs on both sides, seemingly at the same time. US 191 from Safford AZ to Alpine AZ is probably the most crooked US highway currently in use. Additionally if you are this far south you might want to experience one of the last remaining authentic stretches of Route 66. Much of Route 66 has bee resurrected and made into tourist traps. Leaving Kingman, Arizona heading west you may still travel the original road to Needles, California through Goldfield and Oatman. This road is paved and passable but not for the faint of heart. It is hard to believe that this was once the major route of travel to the west coast. No Tourist traps on this stretch other than Oatman where the wild burros will swarm the road in search of carrots
@davidegg22
@davidegg22 8 лет назад
Peter, many thanks for your wonderful comment. It sounds like you have the wild exploration DNA gene in your veins also! I will keep your travel suggestions. I have explored some of the SW over the years but not as extensively as you. Great suggestions, Peter! I must return to the SW!I have been to Kingman and Oatman a couple of times to feed the burros carrots but have not explored past the tourist stops. The best locations are those off the beaten path. Too much to see, so little time! Thanks again for watching and taking the time writing your detailed comment. I certainly appreciate it and I know others who read your post will appreciate it also. Happy trails to you! Dave in Montana.

IMHO I think the most beautiful road in America is in Montana but I don't think it is the Beartooth Highway. It is HWY 200 between Plains and Heron. The Clark Fork River, Noxon Reservoir, and the rugged cliff-like mountains are spectacular.

This is from MDT, Montana Department of Transportation: The Beartooth Highway is currently OPEN for the season. Because of the high elevation on this mountain pass, travelers should check current weather and road conditions. Crews make every effort to keep the road plowed and open, however unpredictable weather conditions may cause temporary closures throughout the summer. Please check the road condition report for the current pass conditions.
