I am a native Oregonian born in Coos Bay 69 years ago and as far as I am concerned Oregon is the most beautiful place in the world. This I know because I was in the Navy many years, my wife is Thai and I am a world traveler now receding in Portland Oregon.
Very nice and informative video. You can also visit a video of budget friendly hotel in Oregon, US ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YkpwYEbB1Ao.html
Greetings from Siletz Oregon. We are enjoying a rare sunny April day. I came to the Oregon Coast for the first time in 1970. The natural beauty took my breath away. It still does. Happy Trails.
Native Oregonian right here! You nailed the Oregon coast in the video. Got married in Yachats, my in laws have a house in Lincoln city, so we eat fish from barnacle bills ALL THE TIME! I make 10-15 trips a year to the coast, I can never get enough of it!
Just visited the Oregon coast for the first time with my family. We all feel in love with the towns, sights and seafood. Your video was a very helpful reference - thank you!
Thank you for this video, Dan. Whenever I get homesick for my beloved Oregon Coast I will watch this. It'll do until I get back down there in the spring. Heading for the Newport-to-Yachats part of the coast. Come visit us again when you're able.
Glad you enjoyed our beautiful state of Oregon. We often stay at my friends cabin in Yachats....pronounced Ya-hots. My husband and I traveled to the Redwoods in 2012 and stayed in the little town of Kla-math.....I was raised in Oregon....and had seen hundreds of large trees and did not think that I could ever get excited about seeing another tree....but, when I saw the Redwoods.....I was yelling to my husband..."Look at that tree....look at that tree...LOOK NOW!" I was completely amazed and in absolute awe!!! If you ever make it back to Oregon during the summer...you really MUST see Crater Lake.....and yes, the water really is as blue as it is shown on photos.....the first glimpse of that beautiful deep blue water will take your breath away.....if you ever make the trip, I suggest you hike down to the lake and take the boat ride around it with Park Rangers as tour guides. It is quite a strenuous hike out....but oh, so worth it. Try to go when it isn't too hot...but, snow can be on the ground as late as July.....there is a lodge there and some cabins too. The Eastern side of Oregon is as different from the costal and inland valleys of the Western side as....night and day, but still beautiful in its own way. Thank you for visiting our state and posting such positive things about it. We really do have everything here....Ocean, many and various rivers and lakes, mountains, desert, high mountain prairies....and still have a lot of wide open spaces too. We do however have some fair sized towns....Portland, Eugene and Salem to name a few.
I am from No Cal and my husband and I just got back last night from an amazing trip down the 101. I love your video will keep my memories of my trip fresh!
Just stumbled over your Oregon coast trip video - we are leaving for SFO in 5 days and I very much appreciated your tips and suggestions. We very much look forward to see all the beautifull sites, meet nice people and have wonderful sleeps whereever it will be. Thanks for your video :)
Thank you, I really enjoyed your video. Well made and entertaining. I love the OR coast and you showed some places I haven't seen yet. I really liked seeing the cheese factory. My family LOVES Tillamook cheddar!!
Wow, there is a Tucker Torpedo in the Coppola Winery! That is a REALLY rare car! This looks like an awesome drive. I've never been to Oregon but I definitely hope to go there one day.
I used to live there. Always loved it and always wanted to return. Now I am an old man but I still dream of returning and spending my final days there.
I saw a picture of Coors Bay, Oregon and i was hooked - i loved watching your informative video, i can tell you like history so it was nice to hear about the magesty of the Red Woods and the best places to eat! I am convcined I must go.
Traveling the 1has been one of my greatest experiences and I'm planning on taking the family down the 101 this coming spring for a few days thanks for the video and tips very much appreciate it! :)
Love this video. My wife and I are planning a Hwy 101 Road Trip and the tips you give are fantastic. Enjoyed it so much I am going to watch the rest in your collection. Thanks again.
Just moved to Oregon four months ago from the Midwest, and I don't regret it one bit. Going to the coast to get away every weekend is awesome. We also stayed in Arcata, CA couple years ago and seen the Redwoods.
That's absolutely beautiful. The wide open ranges, the coast line and the nature. Thank you very much for posting your road trip Dan! Best regards from Bavaria !
In 1959, my parents spent their honeymoon at the Ester Lee Motel in Lincoln City. When I was about 12 years old, our whole family stayed there for a night. Then in 2016, I took my newlywed wife there. It is a great motel in a great location.
I know! I went through my list of favorite places when putting together and realized that I left Newport off. I tried to make up for it at the end as we voted it the best shopping place on our trip at the end of the video! Thanks and you live in such a wonderful place.
Hello Dan, Just viewed your video, we are planning to take the 101 coast road starting from Seattle down to Orford, returning to Seattle in a loop via Portland, your video most helpful Thanks Martin (London England)
Thanks gotehorn, We are so glad they did... What you wrote mirrors our own home state (Tennessee) and the Great Smoky Mnts being protected from the logging industry.
I appreciate all the recommendations. About half way through your video my wife asks me, “You’re writing this stuff down right?” Thankfully I was able to just take a screen shot of your description. Thanks Dan.
Andrew Freeman I'll be watching for it ... don't wait too long though .. fulfill those dreams while you're still young enough to be able to. Time waits for no one.
I really enjoyed your video Dan, but if I may correct you on a few things. The banana belt you mentioned and the world war 2 bomb are both in Brookings. The reason the temperature is warmer in Brookings is because what's called a "Chetco Effect". The way the east winds come down the chetco river causes the warmer temp. I live in Brookings now but I grew up in Lincoln City, I'm glad you mentioned Barnacle Bill's they have been open for as ten years longer then I've been alive (35):) And yes you are right the chowder is the best at the sea hag! Always has always will. A close second would be Dory Cove in Lincoln City. I'm glad you got so much enjoyment on our beautiful coast. Come back soon
Thanks Jillian, I thought i read somewhere that the Japanese plane used the light house as a guide to head east and then down to Brookings? I will definitely try the Dory Cove next time we are in LC.
I am from Oregon and I thought this was a good video to show how beautiful and diverse Oregon is! I'm from Tillamook and now that I'm on the East coast, I really miss the ice cream and cheese!! The cheese is too expensive out here and the ice cream is non-existent. :( Glad you got to visit Oregon!
One of the best state laws ever passed was the one which protected Oregon beaches by making the entire coastline public. For that reason Oregon will always be a treasured destination of tourists. And provides a great economic alternative to logging dollars.
Dan I am a native Oregonian, and have traveled the full length of the Oregon Coast many times. I agree it is special and I enjoyed your video and comments. I also enjoyed all the comments. However, you missed one of the most spectacular and beautiful parts of the coast and I have to admit I missed it until a few years ago. When you drive up 101 you get to Coos Bay and I would hurry through along the river and all the sawmills and never stop or even check it out. But west of town is an area called "Sunset Beach", it is about a 30 mile drive out the bay to the ocean. The first real view is of a little cove and state park, then up the hill a few miles is Shore Acres which is worth a full day or more. The road has several view points of what I think is the most beautiful section of the Oregon Coast. I have hundreds of pictures of the park and ocean. I am sure you can find lots about Shore Acres on the internet. It was discovered by a local lumberman who built his home and developed a park for his own enjoyment. The house is gone and now its a public park. BTW, I live in Central Oregon an area worth another trip to Oregon. Curt Drahn
Oh my I am very sad I missed it. I googled Shore Acres and you are right. Wow what a waterline and gardens. It looks amazing and I hope we get back out that way again to see it in person. Thanks Curt
Thanks for sharing. I'm from Oregon but i live in Indiana, so it's nice to see video's of home. :-) If you get back to Oregon, make sure you go see Crater Lake and The Natural Bridge!!
great views I never seen Oregon coast I'm next state over Idaho. I have seen southern Texas coast from port Mansfield to port Isabel south padre island.
Great review of the OR coast. One thing, @3:37, its pronounced 'clam-ith' not 'clay-mith' for Klamith. Also its 'ya-hotz' for Yachats @8:45, and 'tilla-muck' @10:45, 'Gear-a-baldi' and Klatsup is more of a 'catsup' with a k pronunciation @12:21. Next time, checkout the Jetty Fishery, right off of 101 about 10 minutes before Wheeler on the left hand side of the frwy. In the summer they grill gigantic fresh caught oysters over a fire pit with a dash of corona and hot sauce. You can also rent a boat and some crab pots and catch a little Dungeness for yourself! They will steam and clean them right there on the dock. I wouldn't buy them fresh by the pound from them though, they are ridiculously priced! (If they do steam and clean for you, make sure they save you the crab heart. You eat it right then and there and it is the MOST amazing flavor!
Dan, great video. Banana Belt is Brookings, Or. If you visit our library, you can see the family samurai sword, presented our city of Brookings by Nobuo Fujita, the Japanese pilot that bombed Brookings. Up the Chetco, river. Your correct about the Southern Coast being the mist scenic. Samuel Boardman who was instrumental in preserving the Coast, considered Brookings his favorite part. I give advice to people visiting, when you hit the Southern Coast, for the next twenty miles stop at every stop that's available. Sunset at Harris Beach. I love Cape Ferrolo, head two your left, when the trail splits take left trail to bench, overlooking Gorgeous beach below. Redwood walk, I suggest Stout Grove up smith river, 20 miles south of Brookings. I like the beer at the brewery next to Fred Meyers on 101. Love the Chips at Wild River Pizza. Well done. Have fun. Feel adventurous, North I've Orick, Fern Canyon. Bring water shoes. That's it folks. Fern Canyon road starts at elk viewing area. Thanks Dan!! You should have stayed in Brookings, made the same mistake my first time through. Best camp Ground Harris Beach State Park, reserve early in summer!
Fern Canyon is one of my favorite places. I visited it years ago and saw the grotto of fern and a herd of wild elk on the beach. I was hooked, and now so are my children. It's a little off the beaten path so it can be easily missed.
you are the best. hopefully we can do the Oregon coast drive next year.do you have one for Grant pass and Columbia river drive from Portland to baker Oregon hwy 84?
What a charming video! I'm amazed at how well you were able to capture the rough and vast coastal area of Oregon in just fifteen minutes. The Esther Lee in Lincoln City is exactly as you said - that's a well-deserved plug for them. One thing I'd like to advise visitors about is not to feed the wildlife, here or anywhere. It makes them dangerous and messes up their natural feeding habits. Cheers!
I'm from Portland Oregon and I've been to just about everywhere on the coast. Yachats is actually pronounced yaw-hots and Tilamook is pronounced till-a-muck. Anyways glad to hear you enjoyed your trip man. Come back soon!
Dan they say everything in moderation, LOL looks to me as you over indulged on on my coast line. In Oregon we cut the trees down so you can see the view.
Fantastic! Thank you both for the wonderful coastal tour! Was hoping I would see Manzanita, Cannon beach, Seaside and Astoria. Did you cut inland before going to these areas? Love the hotel and restaurant tips, too~
We really wanted to get inland but alas time was not on our side. We cut over to Portland and that was about it. I really hope we can get back one day. Thanks BC77
Dan, My wife and I so enjoyed your coastal hwy 101 video. You set a standard of informative travel experiences. We are going to subscribe and hopefully find more enjoyable videos to watch. Thanks for the tour. We would also have enjoyed more video time spent exploring these coastal towns you visited.
We are dreaming of making Brookings/ harbor our retirement town so we want to make friends over there before we arrive. We are in Peoria, Illinois and want to surround ourselves with good people with kind hearts. What area are you in?
Oh you live out east, ok. My wife's brother lives in Ashville, NC. So when we go east we may head up north like you did. I love lobster, too. Thanks again for your efforts to share these videos.
Steve Foerter Thanks Steve. Man I would love to retire out west on the coast. The truth is I would love to retire up in Maine as well, but only in the summer. I hope you enjoy your travels as much as we have. Heading to Montreal and Quebec City this spring should be interesting.
Thank you so much Dan for making and sharing this fantastic documentary :-)) I live in UK, although I know someone who *loves Oregon* there's no way for me to do a trip there...I really enjoyed riding along with you .•*¨🌠🎵♥ ~Peter
Peter Petelski Also, the starfish, mussels and other sealife that Dan saw on the rocks during low tide is very good news. There are reports that the British Vancouver coast line has no sealife, hundreds of miles, no birds, no insects, and the culprit may be Fukushima. It is said that the tide pools are the nursery of the sea and that almost everything is dead, and gone in the tidal pools that were once teeming with life along the British Vancouver coastline.
