Man. This channel, every other year, takes me back to my 16 year old self subscribing to it back in like 2007. One of the first channels I ever subscribed to. Always warms my heart to see another video posted on it. Thank you. Wish you all a Merry Christmas and happy new year
It's amazing how many people like me who have subbed for many years are reminded of all of your videos as soon as you release a new one. Feels like a throw back!
hey man! only trick used was throwing cat food on the surface to get the kitty up there haha. it all has to do with the “shadow” being cast by the cylinder. the shadow is fake. it’s printed on the checkerboard. so you mind thinks it’s real and automatically adjusts the shade of the square
@@brusspup But how did you mange to prevent the real shadow of the cylinder from interfering with the fake shadow? My mind is seriously broken trying to think about the lighting setup...
Dude, thanks for being (one of) the only comment(s) here addressing how incredible it is to reproduce this illusion in real life. Everybody else either has no idea how amazing this setup is, or they're too distracted by the channel's annual upload to notice lol
@@MrRoboticBrain I think the light in the back left is very diffuse, so doesnt cast much shadow. Another light in the front right casts the main light over the scene (you can see the shadow on the other non-grid side of the cylinder). The shadow is just a printed illusion.
Seeing a rare Brusspup video uploaded always puts a genuine smile on my face. The editing on this was pretty wild aswell. Merry Christmas and a Happy new year!
Damn it's been over 10 years now when I started following your content, back then with the old original RU-vid account. And in the meantime I forgot and today I randomly remembered your channel and am happy to be back, a throwback to the good and seemingly easier days. :)
Wait, what? At first, I thought it was the usual shading illusion, but then when the "black" tile was moved onto a "white" tile, I realized it was a different illusion altogether: how come the tile does not become darker when going into the shade? The illusion is not caused by the actual lighting (if I understand correctly)! It broke my mind for a while, well played! I hope viewers will take the time to appreciate it.
The illusion is cased by the fake lighting: Both the big light you can see black cylinder and the shadow the black cylinder cast on the checkerboard are a lie. Look at the shadows of everything else: The scene is actually lighted from the front. If the scene was actually lit as is it pretends to be, your brain would be right: The square would have to darken it's true ("unlit") color in order to keep the same apparent brightness when it move to a more lit area of the scene.
The light on the back-left is just for show, there's a big light on the front-right, which is shown in the first shot of the video. You can also see the effect of that in the shadow of the cat. The tiles are just colored in such a way to mimic the on-paper illusion, and are not "colored" due to a shadow being casted on them.
I legit just remembered this channel & wanted to watch some of your old videos, but then I realized you just uploaded 15 minutes ago after 2 years of silence. Absolutely incredible 👏👏
No matter what I watch, where I go on the internet, I always end up gravitating back here. I’m always excited to see what new things you’ve got in store for us, I can’t wait for the next video!
I swear this illusion trips me up everytime, even though I can clearly believe they are the same shade, what eyes see makes you believe it's some magic.
Thanks for the effort and the contribution.... It's the refraction that makes it appear that way..... it's like many surfaces that get a "different" color when the light falls on them differently.... Apparent but not matarial
