For me, this is still one of the most amazing illusions. The design is just so simple and yet the illusion is so amazing.
This illusion has been around for a long time but always in the form of an image. It was created by MIT professor Edward H. Adelson. I wanted to take it from a flat piece of paper and turn it into a real, life sized illusion that I could interact with to demonstrate the effect.
The illusion works because of the "shadow" that falls on the checkerboard. Lets think of the square that the shadow falls on. Now picture that the shadow doesnt exist, you would see a light colored square surrounded by the dark colored squares. But when the shadow falls on top of that light colored square, the shadow causes the shade to become darker but it also causes the surrounding darker squares to become darker. So within the shadow region the brightness and darkness of the squares are still relative to one another. But they are no longer relative to the squares that lie outside of the shadow.
So if you were able to pick up the middle square and move it to one of the outside dark squares, they would be 2 different shades, But the trick is ..that when you move the square you are moving it WITH the shadow still printed on the square. So now you've moved it out of its relative area, outside of the shadow region (but with the shadow still printed on the square) ..to the area where it's the same shade as the "dark" square.

Remove the entire cylinder, gray B in the shadow will come out White. Under Different light, different color marked dark A,light B have same shade of gray. Due to light influence,different color will have identical Color Scale. Gray is a color scale in the middle between dark A and white .

The cylinder shadow is painted onto the tiles, which is how the grays match. The light is too diffuse from the left to cast that much shadow, and you can see even light on the floor tiles on the right, telling you the platform is also lit from above. If she moved the cylinder it wouldn’t change much.

You actually don't need to move the cylinder to prove that those two boxes are the same color. Just stop the video right before or after she has moved one of the boxes, and cover the cylinder with your hands on the computer screen. Just place one hand over the cylinder on your computer screen, and another hand on the opposite side on your computer screen. The 2 box should be centered right between your two hands, and you'll notice they are actually still the same color.

Disclaimer: I'm not saying this video is fake. In fact, I think it is interesting. Like kaliomi said, I myself would like to know what is actually there. It would make sense if the tile she moves out of the shadow was white. Then what would it look like if she didn't put the tile back to the original position, but on the darker tile within the shadow (and reverse outside of the cylinder's shade)? Would there be 3 of the same color tiles in a row? Or would it blend in with the darker tile and make no difference to our perspective view (within the cylinder's shade)? What if the light which casts the shadow of the cylinder is turned off? Then what would happen if the other light is turned off? And then what would happen if the cylinder is removed?
@keech2540

vi tiet thiet Pause it when the camera shows the whole grid and focus on the fact that those 2 tiles are the same color. Your brain will start making sense of everything and you will be able to see the differences in color of each tile. To see a picture of old that will be easier to do this to, what I did is google image searched 'same color tile.' It's the same thing only easier to look at.

This has long been one of my favorite illusions. What I think makes it even more remarkable is that when the movable square is in the shade, you would expect it to look darker. And you would expect it to look lighter in the light. Wouldn't you? Yet the opposite is true.
@NeilCrouse99

0:58 ... If you look at the bottom of the big round column that is causing the shadow on the board, you will see the shadow on the extreme corner on each side. You'll see a tiny strip of shadow crossing first the dark, then the tip of the corner of the light square. This is a good place to see just how much of difference this shadow makes on the two extremes of this shade. Very cool.... And only missed seeing it new by 11 yrs.....😳

Does the illusion only work when viewing this on video? If that square from the shaded area is the same as that dark square outside the shadow, then what about the adjacent squares that are even darker in the shadow? Also, if you remove that canister and take away the shadow, what happens?
@andrewmquintero

So, what would happen if the shadow (or cylinder) is removed instead of removing the piece and placing for comparison? This does not logically make since to me. And the removable piece just looks like it's changing colors because of the source of light hitting it (color changing mechanism), instead of it actually being the same color.

I think I understand why this happens. We were hunters, so our brain structure was under evolutionary pressure to be able to distinguish between objects, to better focus the prey. So when there is some contrast in a shady environment, the brains increases the contrast. You see that at 1:00 when they move the square, it "changes" because our brain increases the contrast. This is probably something that happens to cats as well, a pity we cannot ask them.

If you pause it at the right time, the two blocks that get compared are actually different colours from the blocks around them. The whole stand is a lie, our brain is used to patterns like a chess board, but this board is not the same colouring as a chess board, just remove the cylinder that blocks light and you shall see the true colours of this stand (which differ from one point to another).

Looks as if they reallt we're different shades right? because when the paper was transitioning from shadow to light, you can see it go light or dark, meaning the shadow plays a large role in deceiving us. Which lede to thinking that the color behind the shadow in the picture of the illusion is unrealistic lol
@tronvillain
@tronvillain 7 лет назад
Andrei Catapang, no. There is no shadow - the entire platform is brightly lit by the light on the top right. The "shadow" is created by tinting the platform itself, and the spotlight on the left is just a red herring which casts no shadow. What you're seeing is literally that illusion in action.
@procrastmh
@procrastmh 7 лет назад
+tronvillain how can you explain 1:04 when the paper clearly changes color from light to dark
@littlehawk85
@littlehawk85 7 лет назад
Andrei Catapang is right, there's definitely a shadow being cast. But I think tronvillain is on to something; there seems to be a bit of cheating going on using different shades. And of course the crucial thing is that we're getting a different level of light reflected depending on where the square is placed - but in the 2D printed version it's the same level of reflected light (that's why it's an illusion).

Though cool to watch, the makers of this video totally misinterpreted the illusion they're trying to demonstrate. The actual setup should be a regular checkerboard pattern, with the square in shadow a white square, and the one outside the shadow area, dark. The the lighting should be such that the white square in shadow is of same intensity as the dark one (as measured by a light meter). The purpose of the original illusion is to show that the brain 'overcompensates', and still makes the white square in shadow look much brighter than the dark one, making the checker pattern still look like a checker pattern despite the shadow. Which is actually an evolutionary advantage, for example to be able to recognise objects on a sun-dappled forest floor.

This is how I think it is done. The square being moved was actually originally a bright green or blue square. Its color was digitally adjusted to precisely match the shade of the other squares as needed. As it is being moved the color is smoothly animated to change from one shade to the other.

I'm baffled by this video of the illusion. Typically it is the shadow cast onto a lighter square that makes it the same colour as the darkened square, so how can she move the square and it not be effected by the shadow cast from the light source? Me thinks the light behind the cylinder is fake, and the shading on the surface of the chess board is actually printed onto the tiles, thus this is no optical illusion like its original, but a different one that is less amazing.
@lillypieisme
@lillypieisme 8 лет назад
That is EXACTLY what I was thinking! I had to come back to this video because I just never understood how it is possible that the "light" tile B is the same shade as the "darker" tile A when in the shadow it is lighter than the "darker" tiles surrounding it. B is only the same shade as A because of the shadow cast. Without the shadow, they wouldn't be the same shade. So this had to be staged lol

+Lilly BunnyButtPie The trick is that it's not actually a "regular" checkerboard. The two squares are the same color, but the combination of the checkerboard pattern and the idea of a "shadow" make your brain automatically judge the squares based on the squares around them. One square looks darker because the squares around it are light One square looks lighter because the squares around it are dark The color never actually changes, if you zoom in on the video and follow the square and ONLY the square, without surroundings, you'll notice that it doesn't seem to "fade"

+Pseudo Lain I think you've missed the point... we both fully understand the illusion, but what most people aren't noticing is that in THIS version of the illusion the shadow is not a shadow but printed onto the paper, therefore the illusion is kinda half real half not. As Lilly said it is a staged version of the real illusion - there are many videos of people doing the real illusion utilizing the light source to cast the shadow.

@AdamRobertshaw

+Pseudo Lain Exactly, right? But watch the video again, and see how the shadows "work"... they are printed onto the paper rather than being cast from the light source. Very odd.

For anyone who thinks this is a video editing trick, do this: Do a screenshot of this, and then import it into a paint program. Cut out a piece from either square and move it to the other square. They really are the same shade!

What is mind blowing about this is not just the visual surprise, but rather the realization that our brains alter reality based on a pre-conceived notion of what we expect. The ramifications of this is that we should not just accept things as we perceive them, as we may be reaching a false conclusion.

This video is staged. 1) Quote from the last paragraph of the description: "But the trick is ..that when you move the square you are moving it WITH the shadow still PRINTED on the square." The key words here are shadow and printed. 2) As many people pointed out in the comment section, if the 2 tiles are isolated from the background, the colour is the same but it should NOT. As the shadow covers the moving tile, the colour "perceived" by our eyes/the camera should be darker. 3) Let's consider the checkerboard without the shadow. The tile that diagonally opposite the original position of the moving tile (in half-shadow) has the same colour than the original one. Then logically also has the same colour than the final position one. This setup is not possible. As a conclusion, the lighting is "fake" (at least not explicitly explained as staged) and the shadow is printed. Anyways, the description is not explicit enough about the staged nature of the installation. Purposely I guess, since half of the video presents the lighting, the shadow and the checkerboard (and the girl). The video misleads people in the understanding of the "Checker shadow illusion" of Adelson. In my opinion, this is intentionnal disinformation. And i hate it.

+UltimateZ I agree with you that it doesn't really matter if it's fake or not. What I disliked is not the fact that it is fake, but that the video is shot in a way that mislead people. That said, it is a personnal opinion and you are free to disagree. I wanted to prove that this is "fake" because many people were debating on this matter. Exposing some easily understandable arguments could possibly put an end to this debate.

+Alexandre C. Yes, there is no real shadow on the board because of second lamp which is not explicitly explained. And it took me a while to see it. (Actually I had a "fight" about this cose it's not possible, if the shodow is not printed) Edit: Actually, you can see shadoouw on the moving square. The combination of light sources is good (As a video itself)

You have to think about this stuff a lot as an artist/illustrator ... especially when you do landscape or environments: lighting/shadows, atmosphere and distance ("atmospheric perspective") ALL change the value and color of objects. Many people just getting into (realistic) painting have to break their expectations and perceptions of what we call "local color", and this is exactly the same idea exercised into an optical illusion (and just as well, hence: "The Dress"). For those in doubt - just Google up a JPG version of the illusion, and try comparing the squares in Photoshop via the Eyedrop tool.

its a trick - The square that moves interact with bright light to go darker and low light to go lighter - So the coating on the tile that moves is an "active" coating

The shading is painted and the block makes it seem light and or a light is underneath the tile to make you think its lighter

This is, in a sense, 2 illusions in one. The shadow which creates the primary illusion is actually printed on the checkerboard. Notice the real shadows (or lack thereof) on the girl's hands and on the floor around the base. There are light sources on both sides which would eliminate the fake shadow. The illusion still works with real shadows, but a fake one is necessary so that the tile can be physically moved from the "shadow" into the light without changing its shade.
@DaveHoskinsCG
@DaveHoskinsCG 10 лет назад
The original illusion demonstrates that even though the squares are actually the same shade, they appear different. Here she's moving a lighter square in the shadow and it becomes darker in the light. It's confusing at first because you're seeing the shadow go across her arm and the square. But it appears to get darker when in the light. I prefer the original, easier to understand version though.
