INCREDIBLE Shark Tooth and Arrowhead Hunting Trip in a Florida Creek! Fossils & Artifacts EVERYWHERE

With most of my hunting locations flooded due to a massive amount of rain lately, we decided to take a trip to a private creek that has always produced a ton of good finds after it floods and recedes. It turned out to be an excellent decision with incredible finds around nearly every bend. This particular creek cuts through not only Miocene aged shark teeth and other marine fossils, but also through newer Pleistocene terrestrial material and even old Native American village sites, where countless numbers of stone tools were lost over the thousands of years of human occupation.

Hey Chris. I’m seriously considering a PaleoPack for my 9 year old grandson’s Christmas gift. I would like a really nice identification book to include with it. Can you recommend a title? The kid reads dictionaries for fun but at 9 years old, I think it would still be best for the book to be heavily illustrated.

What general area in Florida do you hunt? Is it South Florida? Would I waste my time hunting in North West Florida? There is a lot of tannin in the water

Awesome video! Bri's artifact looks like a Culbreath blade, Archaic which would date it to between 10,000 - 3,000 BP. Stellar find!
@ls1jay
@ls1jay 2 года назад
I'd call it a culbreath as well. In the probably 3500 or so year range as culbreath types are very late archaic, just before early woodland citrus points showed up.

That big ol' broken point you found at 5:53 or so was probably a hafted blade instead of a projectile-- I'll bet it was somebody's treasure, too, I knap flint and obsidian as a hobby and that thing must've been a beauty! Lots of hard work went into making it. Tons of large points that people find were actually hafted blades, knives with wooden or bone handles attached with tree-resin glue and sinew; arrow and atlatl-dart points broke and were lost, but you might have a good blade for most of your life! Nice! That was a *real* beauty that you found at 8:13! Daaaaaaaang... The one at 13:55 was the killer, though. I'm not good at identifying types of points, especially FL points even though I'm from there; I didn't start knapping til I moved out west. But if I had to guess, I'd say that last one might be a Broward point missing a bit of its base? REALLY nice, and it fits the size.

The collaboration videos with your friends are so fun too. I was surprised when I saw you guys at the What The Hales Ranch. I can’t wait to see what else comes out of their property. Great finds guys. Saw a few people in the comments saying you should put them back where you found them. Lol. I say they are safer in a case, being preserved and displayed for many to see for years to come. I guess your laws in Florida are a bit different than here in Missouri, but if you're doing it the legal way, I see no issue with it. Rock on.

Loved the video! I have a creek very similar to that on my property but I never thought about looking in the gravel beds for stuff. I'm always on the look out for arrow heads, any time we dig but so far nothing. However, there are several grinding rocks. Some are very deep so I'm sure people have been here (Santa Cruz Mts. Calif) for thousands of years. I'm looking forward to other vids from you.

I'm a new subscriber as of today! I really enjoyed the video. I've had a lot of luck finding points and even an obsidian awl that was found in a dig about 3 feet below the surface when I was in the 8th grade. About 3000 years ago the Quivera had a large population of 30,000 in the county I live in. There's even a big intaglio of a snake with a big egg in it's mouth 9 miles from my house. As for fossils, my family found some wooley mammoth teeth in our sand pit, and a friend found a nearly complete Tyrannosaurus on his farm.

I’d really like to see follow up info on the arrowheads, like who they might have originated from or how old they are. I was also confused on why you were able to keep these when in previous videos you couldn’t. I’d love also if you could flash pics of the animals or fish that you find. These extra touches add a lot of dimension for me. 😀 Thanks!

All great suggestions. It is illegal on any state land in Florida. Navigable waterways like rivers are state land. Tiny creeks like this are often private. It is legal on private land or on some public lands that are not FL state owned (but private property is always the safest). These particular projectile points are 2000-7000 years old and may have been knives more than spearheads. None shown here are true arrowheads, technically. I’ll be doing a lot more of the educational stuff, showing much more of the animals I find pieces from. I appreciate you watching and commenting!
