Looks like zenoah 80cc twin cylinder motors. As a kid I used to be onto gopeds and stuff like that . You may want to look int polini 50cc engines if tuned right with pipe they make around 18hp but the weight you will save would be a big plus . Good luck

Jay Savage Yeah! That makes sense now! Thanks for that! Wow, completely new code must be written for the flight controller. That must be some complex staff since there are two engines (each with slightly different rpms than the other)

BIll Georgoulakis Both the engines are connected to the same shaft via belts, so the RPMs will be matched. The flight controller will connected to servos to control the blade pitch rather than controlling the quad via prop speed.

How do you manage yaw control? Is that why you have the two engines? one engine per two props?
@YOYO-vl6xr
@YOYO-vl6xr 9 лет назад
and where is the test flight? this thing flyes?
9 лет назад
It is an amazing machine guys. Is it your aim to use cyclic and collective pitch to roll and pitch? In that case how will you manage yaw? Are the two engines paired with two rotors in order to change rpm in both? Sorry for so many questions, I got shocked when seeing your work :)?
@RonALampman
@RonALampman 9 лет назад
Hi, Great project you're working on. Just a guess but if your rotors span 30", the maximum amount of static thrust will be gained at a pitch of 18" (30x18). This is because the max amount of static thrust is achieved at the diameter multiplied by 0.6. That said, with a rotor speed at a nominal speed of of 5600rpm, your rotor tips speed will be at a safe 500mph (well below Mach I, 767mph ASL), you will achieve 137lbs per rotor head for a total of 548lbs at maximum. Subtract the weight of the airframe with fuel, and that will be your max payload. I can hardly wait to see what you achieve. All the best!

Hey Ron, I like your leads and ideas. However, can you please explain how did you get 137lbs per rotor head? Don't you not have to know the (horsepower) power? Also, did you use diameter of 30" to calculate the wing tip speed... if so, why that and not the diameter of 18" which is the diameter of the propeller? Thanks a lot!

First of all, Great Job !!! It looks awesome My only concern would be Yaw control . On electric models the Yaw is controlled by the speed differential of counter rotating motors? I Can see how you can control Pitch and Roll by manipulating the pitch on the blades but since all of the booms will be spinning at a constant rpm of each other, Yaw might not be possible. Curious to see how it flies. A tricopter of even Pentacopter design might be worth considering if yaw is not available.
@נעימהרגב
@נעימהרגב 9 лет назад
easy to solve the yaw problem1. the pitch create torq 2. it is possible to give the props a small angle so it use the thrust to give some torq
@Incrediblehlq
@Incrediblehlq 9 лет назад
Franco Giambona As the pitch of the blade increases, then lift increases, but drag also increases creating an equal but opposite torque on the platform. So but increasing pitch in the blades spinning one direction and decreasing in the other, you can get an imbalance in torques and therefore a yaw movement without changing the overall lift.
@power-max
@power-max 9 лет назад
Incredible HLQ You can even add "yaw" motors to further improve yaw control, similar to that of an actual helicopter.
@masso172
@masso172 8 лет назад
+Incredible HLQ Still makes no sense to me. As the pitch of which among all the blades increases? Also, where exactly are you referring to where you say drag increases? "Increasing pitch in the blades spinning in one direction" aren't they all spinning in the same direction? Also explain that "inbalance" of torques. Thanks
@MrPvdm68
@MrPvdm68 8 лет назад
+masso172 2 rotors are going clockwise and 2 anti clockwise, just like an electrical quadcopter. By increasing the pitch on 2 rotors and decreasing on 2 others you will be able to 'yaw'. Just think of a helicopter, when they are on the ground with 0 pitch, the tail rotor has very little work to do, but when the pilot changes the pitch of the blades (take off) the tail rotor will have to work a lot harder to keep the heli from yawing.

You're losing a lot of lift with those fat spars being in the way. At least a third of your airscrew lift/flow is pushed into the spars, creating eddies and vortices.

Very cool project, BUT, first of all - how are you gonna control every and single one of the propellers? Second: Those engines have a buffering time for responding to your commands, and that is not "so" bad, but the same is for the Flight Controllers commands, and unfortunately it stays unstable in air. My opinion: you need one of the 8 KW 3-phase motor to bind it to your engine as a el.generator, and with 4 el. motors on every drone arm you could provide lift and control the drone.
@CSparzo
@CSparzo 4 года назад
It looks like they have a means of controlling the pitch of each propellor individually which would answer your question.
@darkodimitrijevic8496
@darkodimitrijevic8496 4 года назад
@@CSparzo Yeah, it could be with the pitch control, but they haven`t made it yet. Maybe they would in the future. I have a feeling that with those two engines working unstable (with changing rotating speeds - what could be heard from the audio) this drone /if it flies/ will jump around in the air. They need a stable thork. But I would like to stay as an optimist, because I like what they have acchived. And btw, except flying videos, that could be almost all what I could expect from this drone, because I wouldn`t like it in my neighborhood, it is so crepe laud, can U imagine flying above your house a couple times a day.... But I will repeat - this is very nice project, BRAVO for such a engineering.
@Incrediblehlq
@Incrediblehlq 4 года назад
We don't need to control the speed of every rotor because we change the pitch of the blades instead. This allows the quod to use its inertia to steady the rotor speeds while going through higher loading situations while the blade go into a steeper pitch and the engines catch up to stabilize the rpms. It also allows much more responsive control than we would have otherwise. The generator idea is a good one, but it is borderline of wether it would provide any beneficial weight savings. It would certainly be mechanically less complex, but perhaps at the expense of more mass due to a significan't amount of copper you add in the form of electric motors.
@darkodimitrijevic8496
@darkodimitrijevic8496 4 года назад
@@Incrediblehlq Well, I hope you are right, I will stay as an optimist. From my experience - pitch control isn`t cheap solution :-/ especially for the little rotors in a WINDY day - when stability, trim compensation (our of atti-mod), moving progression (in desired direction) and the wind are vectored :( . I wish you luck, you are gonna need it. I suppose that the other engine is for the redundancy? or I am wrong? I am hardly waiting for the next video :)
@Incrediblehlq
@Incrediblehlq 4 года назад
@@darkodimitrijevic8496 Both engines provide power at the same time to a single shaft through one way bearings. If on engine is faster than the other, it cannot hold that rom, and so slows down until the other engine is at the same speed and then power is balanced between the two. In the testing we have done, it seems to work decently well, but we have only done a somewhat flawed tethered flight test so far. There is some talk among the team memebers to perhaps start up some work on it again this summer, but with current world conditions, this may not be possible until a later time.

@Incrediblehlq
@Incrediblehlq 9 лет назад
Green Silver We are hoping to get a half hour run time per gallon of fuel, but this number is based on fuel consumption specs from the engine manufacturer. We have no idea the condition under which they got their numbers, so really don;t know with any certainty what kind of flight time we will get. As we do some ground testing, we will likely get a much better idea.

This is awesome experimental build. At some scale it might make sense to pursue the most weight efficient gas generator/charger. Would take some custom charger tech to do right, I think. You could then simply use a 'traditional' quad tech/structure elsewhere, and it's accompanying simplicity advantages. Plus you'd have a short battery flight reserve. If you could get the gen/charger, gas, and small battery to weigh no more than regular batteries, you might get some real energy density gains. Or this idea may already have been found to not be that much help. The concept I present is of course not new. If it does help we there may even be some examples of such already built, idk.

USE EDF electric motors AND buy a Tesla Power Wall battery. In fact, Buy 5 batteries and used approx 170 EDF electric motors mounted in formation with necessary space in-between. 170 should give you 100 Kg of extra lift, i.e. rideable. //Erik S

erkanen But the TPWB's weigh 100kg, and finding the right point to mount it will also be an issue, as if too high, it'll create topple and if too low, it'll create a huge pendulus period. That will also fight the pitch and roll inputs from the airscrews.
