Wow. Tremendously powerful. I get a Tom Waits/Leonard Cohen type vibe from Nick Cage. There's a rawness, an honesty, a willingness to be emotionally vulnerable, indifferent to what people might think of such nakedly expressed feeling. First time I ever heard this. Outstanding. Thank you, DS9--again.
So glad that you explore more of Nick Cave. He's one of my favorite artists, and very much like you describe him. His work is often dark, but versatile, and almost always both poetic and beautiful. He's got sooo many songs I could recommend. For "beautiful" songs, maybe you could try Into my arms, The ship song, Breathless, Where the wild roses grow - or the amazing live version of Push the sky away with the Sydney philharmonic orchestra. For something sadder, maybe Distant sky or Girl in amber. For something darker or less balladlike, Stagger Lee, Jubilee street (live in Denmark), O children, Higs boson blues, The weeping song, Fifteen feet of pure white snow. And many more :-)
If you ever get the chance to see him live, don’t miss it, i have only been to church once (I’m an Israeli jew so a friends grandmother invited me to church when i was in NYC it was wonderful), but his shows had the same vibe and reminded me of that visit.
His letters to fans, called "The Red Hand Files" are amazing. His responses to fans' questions show him to be a sincere, thoughtful and generous person.
I love that you 'get' Nick Cave. No matter what genre of music, a great writer with passion and self-honesty will shine! Great job and your guitar playing is progressing well, my guitars are the one thing that's always have time for me, but they do talk back a lot. Ha ha Peace.
Great dissection of the song to understand. The whole album deals with his grief at that time, its an amazing album. Check out his side project band Grinderman, so many good songs there as well, try Kitchenette for starters ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bgj5MCzqri8.html - Nick is the last living truly amazing songwriter, shout outs to Tom Waits and Mark Lanegan but Nick is on another level.
It drew me in so intensely. I hung on every word. Beautifully arranged musically. So tragic about his son:( Definitely shed a tear. Thank you for this reaction.
Sure. Was certainly an influence although if u look at the biginnings of Nick's stuff it's also very desinguishable, also different epocques and therefore developement as an artist (I say this because the association with LC and Tom Waits is mentioned everywhere and I feel is necessary to destinguish them as well xD). For an example, check out the version of Avalanche, which is the first song of their first album (of Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds; he had previous bands before that). The anguer of a post punk gothic sound and scene of the 80s was very present there.
What a beautiful reflection on such a heartfelt song, if you enjoyed this one Im sure you are gonna appreciate "waiting for you" from the same album, that song is just crushing, cheers man!
Thank you Daniel for bringing me to this beautiful and so moving song. I did already know that Nick Cave's son had tragically died quite close to where I live on the South East coast of England and guest after the first few notes that it was going to be about his loss. It must be so difficult to come to terms with losing a child who is just coming into the full force of his life. I think this song will help those people struggling with such loss.
I would strongly suggest to you a song by Robert Plant called I Believe, written in the early 90’s as a way to say a final farewell to his beloved son Karac, who died suddenly in 1977 at the age of 7. Another father dealing with the immense snd overwhelming grief of losing a young child.
you mentioned Warren Ellis. They've collaborated for years. You need to hear Carnage, and also the band The Dirty Three ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z1Lh06y6Z1Q.html Also listen to the whole of this album, especially Ghosteen Speaks.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--DQT_R2VMJQ.html
I don't think this is Bad Seeds. Just Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. This came out after the tragic death of his son. I have always been a fan but the stuff he's done since then is so full of grief that it makes me cry. Btw, he's done some wonderful soundtracks, the Proposition is on constant rotation in my house. He wrote the screenplay as well, a really great film. He may be my favorite artist and that's a hard thing for me to quantify.
From the Ghosteen album which was released after his sons death. Listen from start to finish, uninterrupted, with headphones and a person like yourself will love the experience.
He did a duet with pop singer Kylie Minogue (because they are both Aussies) called "Where the Wild Roses Grow". They alternate verses in this song, and the video is beautiful. "Fifteen Feet of Pure White Snow", "Jubilee Street", "As I sat Sadly be Her Side", "God is in the House", and "Oh My Lord comes to Mind".
As being an artist myself ( sculptor and painter) Nick Cave has been my greatest inspiration for 30 some years. His sensitivity, all the beauty and vulnerability, the raw brutality, all the feelings that he expresses. The way he is constantly evolving. And if you have the chance to see him perform live, he is also an outstanding entertainer. His concerts are simply the best.
“Oh my god.” was the exact same reaction I had after listening to this gem for the first time. I was in bed in the dark with headphones on, and I listened to the whole record, front to back, what an experience. I did have to pause after two songs just to take in what I had just heard: - Bright Horses, and… - Sun Forest I honestly think “Oh my god”… is about the most appropriate response anyone could have. The songwriting on this album is elevated, and between Skeleton Tree and then Ghosteen, I could not be more excited to hear the new album they’ve been working on.
Nick is incredible, listen to push the sky away and jubilee street. He’s one of the deepest artists I’ve ever seen. Driving from Florida to New York in October for his show at the Becon Theatre. He has a dark New York vibe and the freaks come out. Metal heads, punks, street creatures and vampires. Totally a incredible experience!
Reminds me of the vibe of Eric Clapton's TEARS IN HEAVEN. Totally different artists and songs but the sense of grief seems similar. TRUE FILM FAN. Elton John's THE LAST SONG about a gay man dying of AIDS is another song about grief that I find unforgettable.
Hi Dicon, so lovely to see you getting into this exceptionally powerful and beautiful piece of music from one of the best songwriters alive today - I listened to this piece and the album it comes from many many times when I first heard it. I want it played at my funeral.
Nick Cave has 'changed' over the years and never dissapoints. Another differnt 'vibe' that you haven't heard (meaning the songs you reacted) is Higgs Boson Blues. I Highly recommend the official video on their page. 🥰👍
As someone else mentioned he answers questions sent to him on the Red Hand Files. I swear he puts as much thought into his answers as he does into his songs. Probably one of the reasons why his fans and I include myself love him so much. Another of his gems you might want to check out is Love Letter. For a complete change of pace I suggest Mickey Mouse and The Goodbye Man by Grinderman. A side project Nick and three of The Bad Seeds did for a while.
Another incredibly emotional song is James Blunt’s Monsters. I cannot listen without tears. A beautiful tribute to his father here’s a link ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DTFbGcnl0po.html
Appreciating the insight into other artists who have influenced your interests across genres. Keep working at your craft. I had never heard this track before and was emotionally vested upon hearing the first few bars.
Robert Plant wrote about his son who died at the age of five in a song called I Believe.. saying his son is now like a feather in the wind. I would suggest listening to it.
That's a a great song that I listen twice I know what it means to lose someone. My Grandma, mother and sister. Said song but a good one and I am also surprised that that the song was made not that long ago.
