What is Apple Sidecar? How do you set up Sidecar with the Mac Mini? you know that there is a way to use your iPad as a second or third display for your Mac; Use MacOS apps on your iPad ; use the Apple Pencil, and best of all it’s included and it’s free.
It’s called Sidecar and it’s a feature I use every day to help drastically improve my productivity. when I’m using a MacBook, my Mac Mini or my iMac. I’ve used Sidecar with Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Lightroom, Final Cut Pro, and it has worked great.
I’m going to review Sidecar. Tell you why I use Sidecar. Show you How to set it up. And then we’ll look at the different features - and some limitations. Sidecar works great in 2021 with the M1 Mac Mini, the M1 iMac and the M1 MacBook Air and Pro - but it also works with older models Macs and iPads. #applesidecar #apple #ipadsidecar

Why not just give us an iOS version of Logic and final cut ? Using two devices or monitors is lame . That’s your workflow not mine . We were promised pro apps on this platform. It’s time to do just that and stop treating iOS users / enthusiasts like second class citizens! Mobile is worthy and capable of any task a lap or desk top can do with the m1 silicon. Enabling Apple is really a bad look period. Can they not afford the time to code these pro apps ? Side car is a poke in our eye directly. And no my iPad is not simply something I want to use as a controller ( aside from the fact it’s super lame. ) or a monitor ! Geez ! 👽

Between my M1 MBP, and my current 2017 10.5” iPad Pro, sidecar works great. Battery life isn’t an issue if I’m using it for just a few hours, but beyond that it’s wise to have a power bank to charge the iPad. The MBP has no issue with battery life.

I am using my iPad Pro M1 with sidecar using my MacBook Pro M1. I Control my Mac with the iPad shared by mirroring the Mac to my iPad and a projector. And using slideover I have all my teaching notes open. The multitasking features of Apple is unmatched. It’s exceptionally powerful and makes my life 100x easier in the classroom. I use the iPad as a whiteboard with a projector too. Saves me money on buying pens.

This is particularly why I am going to buy Ipad to use as a whiteboard during lectures, I don't feel very good with Wacom as I can use an iPad to present directly (replace the Wacom and the MacBook). however, sometimes, I have to switch between coding and whiteboard during sessions. in such cases, I plan to depend on the sidecar to project from one device only. In your case, can you annotate your notes and write on them using iPad easily?

Great video thanks!, One thing I would change though, is to have the possibility to adjust the resolution for the sidecar screen. It's selected by default but i think we could get in iOs retina display's, like Default, more space, etc.

Don't use sidecar everyday, but when I do use it it's soo easy and great to have.. I might start trying it out in photoshop and just throwing my tools on there . Great video man!

Great video!! I’d like more information on the changing buttons at the bottom of the iPad screen, I imagine they are the same as the Touchbar, which I don’t have on my laptop. Also, can you use the pencil in any app? I’m just starting to learn Affinity Pro and am keen to use it there. I have the 2017 iPad Pro and the first gen Apple Pencil. Are there differences in using Sidecar with the first gen pencil! Thanks.

I just got a new iMac and my Wacom tablet (which I used with my MacBook Air) just would not connect with each other 😢. So I would in my iMac do the bigger edits in photoshop, close photo shop, then did smaller edits on my PS on my iPad which worked. But finding out about this… yay! Thanks again!

Nice video, but the only thing what I would like to know about SideCar - can it be used in Final Cut Pro as an external HDR display? Or it uses it as regular one? (on iPads of course which support HDR content playback)

I had high hopes for sidecar, but my 2017 MacBook Pro is too old to handle it. It quickly heats up, and throttles the experience, gradually lagging more and more, fan blasting at full speed, and eventually fails. I’m sure it’s much smoother on a modern computer. Looking forward to getting an Apple Silicon Mac soon!

You can also use the magic keyboard with sidecar. Sometimes I will turn on sidecar and using the mouse from my Mac and the magic keyboard I use the iPad only. Very fun being able to switch between MacBook and iPad when ever I want.

@techgeartalk, im interested in picking up an ipad mainly to use as a second screen with my 13" Macbook Air. Do you think the 11" will suffice or do you reccomend going with the larger? I mainily use my second screen to monitor email and/or project managment software. Im leaning towards the 11" inch as it will be easier to handle as a tablet, but am concierned ill reget the size are as second screen. Thanks!

Great video! I'm working on PS (sketching and coloring) with sidecar via iPadPro M2-11and iMac 5k 2017 but wired yet it's so laggy! I turned off Chrome, placed a fan behind the iMac but to no avail. It was working fine before, like a week ago. I'm just wondering how to make my workflow faster. Another question is, is working on an M2 Max MBP seamless with PS, iPP and sidecar? Thanks!

@@TechGearTalkHi! Can you mirror the mbp 13 to an ipp 13 with mbp closed in your backpack. And never open the macbook, always use the Ipad, as a main screen, without ever opening the macbook to turn on or to connect, if you never get neither the ipad's nor the macbook's battery to 0% ?

I'm trying to find a way not to sell my 27" 5k 2015 imac since my 16" M1 max arrived. The massive e missed opportunity with Sidecar is the lack of ability to use the XDR iPad Pro as a HDR grading display in FCP. Apple would have sold a ton of those if we could have used the iPad Pro that way. Its fine for a general use extra display and it can work well for grading SDR but it also cannot be used as a AV out device with FCP. You have to move the viewer to the iPad and display it full screen. Not 100% the same thing. With that said I still love having the ability to use both my M1 MBA and 13" iPad Pro away from my desk. I have both with me all the time anyway so using both together is a really nice added ability.

I'm so glad it's helpful Brian. If you don't need portability, and you can re-use your existing accessories, that Mac Mini is an absurd value. Upgrade to 16GB of RAM and get enough internal storage (you can supplement with fast external SSDs) and you should be good to go! I appreciate the kind words and support 🙏🙏

@@TechGearTalk Great video, very useful, thanks. Something I’d really love to see though is the ability to move a colour palette off of a drawing app and onto a separate device. Imagine using Coral Draw on a tablet with the colour picker palette on your smart phone. Your screen would be your canvas while your phone would effectively be your paint palette 🎨 It would be so easy to scroll between different colour schemes or line weights etc while keeping your main screen as a full size canvas.

Is there an app or some setting to allow the sidecar screen to be mirrored for use in a teleprompter rig? I'd like to use my ipad as a second screen in a teleprompter for zoom meetings...so I can keep eye contact, but the reverse image from the mirror makes things a little difficult.

I wish you could navigate on the page you bring up separately with a stylus or you finger on the iPad. Would’ve come in really handy for a few things I need to access but I can’t access (because of security issues) directly from my iPad.

If you hold and press the options/alt key while selecting the scaled "resolution" option you will see additional "hidden/native" resolutions options for your iPad with sidecar! Hope this helps

It was helpful. Is it possible to mute the sound receiver on the iPad when using it for a presentation with another monitor when I am the presenter and using my Mac book as the main devise. I am just using the iPad as a second camera andIt is causing an echo because I sign in on both devises.

Just getting a MacBook Pro and will be using it with resolve with a bigger monitor. Can I have the video output on the smaller 14-inch MacBook screen. Thanks for any help, Barry Wilkes

Love Sidecar! Especially for using when drawing in photoshop but I’m not a fan of how it only works with products that have the same Apple ID. I set up a separate Apple ID for my work computer but since my iPad Pro is connected to my personal Apple ID, I’m not able to use Sidecar for work :( Maybe Apple might fix this?

Excuse me, Don´t you have any problem using Ps with the iPad? I tried to draw using sidecar but it has lag and I think it doesn't detects the pressure of the pencil so well.. :/

Using Monteray 12.3.1, the interface in the control panel is different. There is no display of Sidecar devices. You have to select Preferences from the display and add the Ipad (or whatever) manually each time. Also, there is no Airplay icon. Trying to troubleshoot from web searches will drown you in a sea of help that does not pertain to Monteray. Very frustrating.
