"Rise above the flame" is probably the most important bit of this song. Many of us feel like we're living in hell, like we're constantly burning our time away. It's up to each of us to rise above and discontinue the monotony.

I've recently been trying to change gears in my life and become a better man. I was doing some work from a coffee shop the other day, and Pardon Me by Incubus was playing over the speakers. This song has been stuck in my head ever since. I've listened to Incubus for years, but I'd never really paid attention to the words of this song. Well, I'm 33 (not 23 like the song) but everything else in this song perfectly describes my journey and my desire to burst into flames, rise above them, and transform into my best self. Thank you Incubus for the motivation to keep pushing ahead.
I'm 43 and feel the same way. Last time I really listened to Incubus I was in the Navy, but this song hits different when you're trying to get out of a dark place inside your own mind. I wish you well on your journey.

I've always seen it as he's reached his limit in putting up with how irrational and hypocritical people can be and how it causes so much despair/pain/hindrance to the world. After noticing this he claims he's above that type of mindset and behavior, hence, "Pardon me while I...rise above the flame". He even says how thinking differently isolates him from others, "the perils of being in 3D(real, genuine)". Music really is poetry in action and can go very deep if you look/listen hard enough.
pretty straight forward, the guy is tired of the world and it's evil ways and he is a bout to freak out, that "burst" can be anything from screaming, to punchng someone in the face, jumping from a told building (not recommended) or simply writting an amazing song
I'm sure anyone could disagree with me cuz it's such a minor part, but I fucking love the guitar part 40 - 46 seconds in! It's mysterious, and maybe even a little tense, yet at the same time, calm! I can't really describe it, but it gives me chills every time I hear it,and I love it, especially at 1 in the morning when it's dark and quiet!
23 years old just found out I have a left temporal glioma(tumor).. that is responsible for my epilepsy.. Attempted suicide recently due to side effects of seizure medication as well as stress. An aunt of mine saved my life my knocking away the knife that was being run across my neck.. She was the one who raised me through my teens. Incubus randomly popped into my head a day or two after the incident and this is the song that plays. Didn't know it would be so appropriate.. Me and my aunt were in tears once I showed it to her....
Not a fan of Incubus, Numetal, or Post Grunge. To hell with all of it really...except this song. It’s just so perfect. It’s what Enter Sandman was. Or November Rain or something. Nobody hated those songs no matter how much they hated noisy rock or metal music back in the day.

Why do I love so many songs like this and they are all older than me? Usually you would see a 15 year old wearing headphones and fancy ass shoes, listening to Drake and going through drama. I didn't grow up like that. The music may be older than me but I couldn't imagine life without it.
