I have an American Pro II Strat and a newly acquired Silver Sky, and I must say, the silver sky is something special. I think it’s just one step better than my two Strats. And I’m a major strat fanboy lol! Nice video!
It’s a great guitar definitely one of the best factory made guitars I’ve ever owned. I have a 62 and a 59 and this definitely holds up to my vintage strats fairly well. Took me a sec to get used to the headstock though. One think I love is the lock in tuners. I did a gig at Bisquit and Blues in the bay and broke a string a few minutes before we were supposed to go on and had a new set in read within two minutes. They stay in tune better then any guitar I’ve previously owned.
I think people are hearing with their eyes. It's hard to get passed a bias with a guitar. I wanted a Fender and was ready to finance one with Sweetwater. They didn't offer anything passed a 6 month payment plan with Fender's, so I went to the Silver Sky. I am not disappointed. It feels and sounds incredible. The PRS fills a gap that exists with Fender's modern line ups. It doesn't replace a Fender, it sits next to one.
Well said…in fact better sound than anyone. Doesn’t replace a fender it sits next to one. Indicating there is a need for every kind of guitar. I appreciate your input!
Nice video sir,, just subbed, I began to learn to play guitar a few months ago, still struggling but I really enjoy playing my PRS McCarty 594. Hopefully I can get good in a few years.
I'm not a John Mayer fan at all.... in fact I wouldn't even recognize any of his songs....that being said I was a lucky buyer of the PRS silver sky nebula 1 of 500 in the world...beautiful guitar...I planned on keeping it to see how collectible it would become and eventually sell it...but damn it I actually love this guitar it seriously feels like a strat but BETTER in every way! I'm a strat/tele guy my whole life & definitely wasn't expecting to feel this way about the silver sky...I would love it if PRS would do a version of a telecaster!
thanks for the insights! how would you compare the American Original 60s stratocaster with the prs silver sky? I find the american original pickups to be too dark sometimes...
I can't say as I've done a comparison so I couldn't give you an educated answer on it. I will say that I like both guitars very much just for different reasons.
Hey Glenn... I am really close on ordering a silver sky but unfortunatelly i am from Greece and there is no way for me to try one out first... I ve reading on forums that the neck of the silver sky is really big and fat, much bigger than an american professional strat... I have a prs custom 24 with a pettern regular neck and i love it although some people claim that the silver sky neck is bigger than a pattern regular and close to the 594 neck... What are your thoughts on the PRS SS NECK PROFILE ?
Glenn did it come set up or did you say that you had to set it up? I’ll have to rewatch. And I did post somewhere else, some are saying the neck is huge and you’re saying it’s slim. Which is it? Lol. If it helps answer if you see this, I do have an American standard strat which feels fine to me. A modern c I guess. Most of my guitars have thin necks but oddly, the guitar I use the most has a chunkier neck. I had no idea until a store measured it. I knew it was chunky but not that big tbh.
Glenn Ireland that was a quick answer. Thank you very much Glenn. We’re right in a major city with zero guitar stores left. So risking it everytime I buy something online. An I’d be the first to buy from an independent store which I did many times until they left for the suburbs. The thin necks I’m talking about that I got from the previous local store were Brian Moore guitars. Just an FYI. Thanks again. Don’t forget to get yourself on Instagram. That’s the “thing” these days. Good luck. 🍀
your review is so great, because you love the guitar, you describe it well, and as you describe it,you play a perfect example of your own description. And it just so happens that your guitar sounds as beautiful as my horizon red through my VoxAC30. Mine sounds better just because i am racist as far as not liking transistor amps and favouring tube amps and i don't like reverb, but I can hear that Silver Sky tone perfectly, and you are a great player
Thank you for a good review and actually expressing an opinion... so many reviews consist of 'Here is what it looks like, here is what it sounds like, let me know in your comments below what you think of it' - infuriating.
Why are people comparing the PRS Silver Sky to a Fender that costs maybe $500 to $700 less? The right model would to compare would be an American Original coming in around $1949, a much closer comparison. The 7.25" radius has been mostly abandoned because to not fret-out during bends, you have to have increased action. It's pure physics. That's not an improvement. Some may like it, but the trade off is higher action.
Glenn, you know I think you’re great - I love everything you do - I really do. (That version of “Over the Rainbow” still gives me chills! On a par with Mandy P!)... but I’m not feeling the need for another Strat in the world. I get your point - they built a better mouse-trap. Except for TWO small things - the Strat in the right hands (not mine!) is pretty remarkable instrument... yeah they differ depending on the wood and the country of production... but if you find a good one it is tough to beat. And two: that neck/heel ... grizzly. It makes a Les Paul’s heel look like a samurai sword! Two guys that had the right idea: Steve Morse and Roger Fisher (there’s that name again!) they both sculpted theirs to make second octave playing more ergonomic. Otherwise - great review - keep’em coming! See - I didn’t even mention how much I despise John Mayer once!
Glenn Ireland I actually got the chance to go and play one a few days after watching this video! Not enough of a difference to spend $2300. Thanks for a good video!
