Old Faithful was once called “Eternity’s Timepiece” because of the regularity of its eruptions. However, this geyser has never erupted at exact hourly intervals as many believe. Ranger Darlene Bos explains how we predict eruptions for this popular geyser. Produced by NPS/Neal Herbert, with additional filming by David Restivo and Jay Elhard.

I remember when I was a kid my dad took me to see Old Faithful. This was around 1973. At that time the eruptions were about every 60 minutes. I remember a park ranger would come out and place a large wheel on a post and start slowly turning the wheel, saying, "She's getting ready to blow," pretending like it was a release valve that caused Old Faithful to erupt. Then right when Old Faithful erupted, he'd give the wheel a hard turn and say, "Thar she blows." He made a big show of it. It was a lot of fun. I wonder if anyone does this anymore?

I’d love to see if machine learning computer software could be implemented to predict geyser eruptions.

I question the timing referred to by this young ranger. When I was a child traveling with my Parents and Grand Parents it erupted every 20 minutes non-fail.

+Johnny Allison The ranger is correct. As you might imagine, more data has been collected about Old Faithful than any other geyser. According to T. Scott Bryan (author of "The Geysers of Yellowstone"), the average of more than 46,000 intervals prior to the 1959 Hebgen Lake Earthquake was 64.91 minutes. Since then, there's been a tendency toward longer intervals, and an earthquake in 1983 increased the average to 78 minutes. The average of over 4,000 intervals recorded in 2007 was 90.4 minutes.

I stand corrected. I was pretty young at the time, 10 or so. It is possible that what I remember was a reference being made about the duration of each spouting rather than the intervals?

I hope that ticking time bomb underneath the park doesn't go off soon I hope this park is around for 100-1000 years more. I've been there 2 years ago and I hope the Volcano doesn't Blow Sky High

Well the USGS says given all the information they have on the Yellowstone Caldera the yearly odds of it having an eruption are 0.00014%. So that's good news for us but they also say these catastrophic events are largely unpredictable but still I wouldn't lose sleep worrying about it.

using the tree to gauge height of water jet over time is dumb! the tree is growing.

The tree is growing far slower than the margin of error dummy. Now get lost KAREN.
