A newborn girl can expect to live to eighty in Sri Lanka, seventy-four in Bangladesh and sixty- nine in India. This is but one of a range of Swati Narayan’s insights from a five-year study across four countries: India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka. She found that even poorer neighbours were doing better than India on a range of social indicators: health, nutrition, education, sanitation, with more women working outside the home.
Narayan’s intensive, immersive research shows that India’s leapfrogging neighbours have worked hard to dilute social inequalities. Land reforms, investments in schools and hospitals, and socio-political reform movements aimed at diluting caste and gender discrimination - all of these have wrought change over the decades. Excellent networks of primary healthcare clinics, village schools and household toilets have transformed the lives of citizens in these countries.
In economically booming India, on the other hand, social ills like sex-selective abortion, child stunting, illiteracy and preventable deaths are rampant. Inequalities are stark here-not only between the burgeoning billionaire class and the neglected masses, but also among the northern states and their southern counterparts. However, it is in fact the successes in states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala that offer grounds for optimism-India is capable of transformation if governments commit to social welfare investments and bridging social inequities.

Swati has to remeber a few things while discussing social development comarison: 1. deep rooted casteism in India which affects every aspect she has described where India lags far behind. 2. Governance mechanism.Except law & order state govts always throw their social responsibility to the Centre. 3. Big, v big population with Democracratic form of governance. 4. Large influx of people illegally into India. 5. Survival of Democracy exacts some cost which is not always good for development. 6. Rampant Corruption 7. Lack of skill based education. 8. No mechanism was there earlier where welfare measures would reach poor in village. Only recently in yhe past few years have they started reaching villages. To publish a book based upon sample data & putting forward a pragmatic solution for a country specific are two different things. Im ascience man, Ialways invite solutions not sample survey based social science books for the sake of publishing & earning a few laurels.

I agree with your points but I don't know how every time caste becomes such a big issue, almost like an hoodoo. Hindus have caste, and we may not marry across castes and socialisation might also be limited, but other communities have sects and denominations which doesn't even recognise other's right to live. How come even such enmity doesn't affect those communities but each and every aspect of Hindus are massively affected by the at best discriminatory caste system? Bharat has been fighting against casteism for 70+ years and yet it hasn't helped to improve the living standards of the people. I really don't understand how a Brahmin marrying a Shudra or vice versa helps improve one's living standards. I guess it's high time we start looking for real issues and their real solutions.

Within a minute I knew that she is leftist but kept watching on, but when she spoke about wealth tax, I couldn't continue any longer. Taxes were reduced not by choice, but by lack of choice. If you tax the wealthy more, they would invest elsewhere, and people would have lesser jobs, lesser food, lesser nutrition, all of which are undesirable. This is what happens when people speak beyond their expertise. What she is directly proposing is a socialist economic model, not happening. We all know how socialism pushed Bharat to the brink of bankruptcy and we had to beg before IMF, the only time in Bharat's history. Speaking of Bharat's rankings, it would be interesting to see the detailed data, for certain things said here doesn't add up fiscally. Specifically about BD, it was all over the news that during Covid BD had to approach IMF for loan and as part of the package, among other things, BD had to let go of the 50% government waiver on electricity bills, and it resulted in an obvious large spike in household expenses. A country with such dire fiscal state ranking above Bharat, as I said, doesn't add up fiscally. The benchmarks also needs to be looked at, because nutrition calculations include protein intake and a big part of it is animal protein, but Bharat has a huge non-veg population. Hygiene and all I won't comment, because there are still many areas where toilet and clean water is still an issue.

I didn't say socialism in economics, I said socialist economic model. I suggest you should talk only about learning about it. There are plenty of examples, even Bharat had it before 1990. And I don't know why you jumped into debt-gdp ratio. Using some fancy words to come out as "intellectual" only works amongst fools, not against people who know what they are talking about and deal with them on a daily basis.

PM announced free food grains for more than 81 crore people for the upcoming next 5 years is best example of Socialist economic model 2. PMJAY 3. MGNREGA, so u never alienate from socialist model, even though I am not saying for pure socialist economic model. Every capitalist economy has high inequality(income, food,nutrition, standard of living, consumption)as per KUZNETS, AK SEN ,DEATON ,JEAN DREZE etc. Which can be countered by socialist model of economy For communication skills, Socialist economic model finds it's roots in economic branch of socialism. For fancy words, i didn't jump but i gave as an example as u gave example with the reference BD's approach to IMF. Now for nutrition , first read any data rigorously (not from what's app and facebook) For your wealth tax point of view, there should be pilot project for it .and after some years it would be analyzed on elasticity of every parameter. As per facts , Government had reduced corporate tax some years ago, please tell me what are positive impacts of it in terms of share of manufacturing, industry, formal employment, capital output ratio, technology innovation. Read economic history of India from research papers of economists published on EPW , IMF research paper, WB etc., socialist model was not main culprit.

@@riashbhyadav726 Again, all you could do is preach, read this, read that and nothing to elaborate on your own, but nevermind. As far as socialism in Bharat, and it being the culprit, I guess I have read enough, but having said that, I hope you have heard the common proverb, haath kangan ko aarsi kya, padhe likhe ko farsi kya. You take a particular food, you get allergy. You stop taking that food, your allergy subsides. I don't think it takes research to understand the culprit, it only takes common sense. About the recent examples of "socialism" that you gave, it clearly shows that you don't understand the difference between a socialist state and an welfare state. Bharat is an welfare state mandated by none other than The Constitution of India, so Bharat got to have welfare schemes and policies, and I hope you would do some reading and research on how socialism is different from welfarism. Lastly on corporate tax reduction, Bharat is a fast growing manufacturing destination and it's no hidden secret, but I guess there's no credible research yet to underline the contribution of the reduction of corporate tax towards this phenomenon, probably because it happened in recent past, too soon to yield results and to be undertaken for research. However, rational and scientific minds won't assume absence of research as absence of contribution. These kinds of policies take time to show their effects and a rational person would give that time.

Not sure whether she is leftist or not but you didn't get her is for sure, she did talk about the south indian states and the level of human development indicators there, in fact the host asked her about the developing and pretty much developed west and south India and she replied that she can't compare apple and oranges, she was looking for eastern states having comparable demographics, and essentially it's not about concluding that our neighbors are doing better rather its about the height of inequality within our own country where a few are having probably the best resources available and a significant majority having too less to sustain, in order to become a vishwaguru or a world leader each and every Indian state needs to get developed and highly populated states like Bihar, UP, Jharkhand and WB need to do better as they certainly underperform on various HDIs compared to many Indian states and some neighbouring countries with whom they share cultural and social ties besides the border...

If you look at hospitals in Kolkata, they are all filled with Bangladeshi patients. That also shows the high inequality in India since people in Kolkata can't even afford modern medical facilities. While demand for modern medical facilities is so high in Bangladesh that they are going to india, suggesting their rising higher income.

Bangladeshi media themselves have questioned both the GDP figures and HDI index.Also the per capita income in dollar terms furnished and showcased keeps changing ...currently we are marginally higher.However even when Bangladesh s per capita was shown high in PPP terms it is much higher than Bangladesh...and it matters to the aam admi because it is linked to the life style,which means things are cheaper in India.Also women s empowerment is a problem in the hindi heartland not in Bengal ,north east or south india.Same about literacy rates .incidentally bengals literacy rates are higher than bangladesh so is north east ...comparable as it is in bangladesh s vicinity.So do not make balloons out of ants.

Covid had serious implications in India because of prolonged lock down in bangladesh Pakistan it was not beyond 3 weeks...our super cautious approach and the wait for our indigenous vaccine prolonged the lock down.They took risk and got vaccines as a grant without paying a dime for it.Bangladesh is a grants and remittance country...this is not an oft discussed topic.

Where did I say things a shouldn't be discussed. I am airing my view, same way you could. But people make claims, their credentials has to be challenged, specially when they are ideologically driven. Tell me what is rational about, comparing status in the poorest state of India (bihar) with status neighbouring countries. And then claiming that that country is better off India. Who knows how impartially her research is. Data she claimed are farce too. Citing an opinion of an individual in Nepal, and assuming that everyone there thinks like her is absurd. We can find problems in most developed countries too. We definitely have problems too, but we are improving. She appears driven by an agenda.

How else should anyone interpret this comment? I believe she is saying Bangladesh is better off than India in certain HDIs. If there are certain states which are bringing down the HDI of India, what is the harm in looking for solutions internally or externally? The author clearly states there are examples of Indian states which have much better HDI. Why do people need to justify their ideology if they provide any constructive feedback? It is ridiculous, anything you say about the country people are labelled as agenda driven. Surely, we can find problems with developed nations too, does that mean we should stop talking about India. If problems are not openly discussed, how can it be identified and (hopefully) fixed? Yea India is far ahead than its neighboring countries but clearly on some indices, we need to figure out what is holding us back.

Being an LDC, among other things, BD gets preferential market access, trade concessions, technical assistances, aid and such other things in the West. I think you are talking of Bangladesh of 2000. I visited Dhaka few years back and stayed for many months in connection with a project work...Now BD is much richer than India. No one wants to come to India. Their main target destination is Italy, Canada, Japan, UK, USA and Middle East..In fact now 2.5 lakhs Indian are working in Dhaka alone in white collar jobs with yearly salary in excess of 75 lakhs INR. I met 3 Indians in the office where I had been deputed and they all were getting yearly package in excess of 1.5 cr INR...Check the trade data between New Delhi and Dhaka in Google. It doesn't cost money. India exports more goods to BD than it exports to any European country or Japan..close to 17 billion dollars..That's why India is so heavily dependent on BD economically ( apart from security).If relations get strained ( like what happened Pakistan ) Indian economy will simply collapse like pack of cards.

@@SuryaRoy-yf3dz Initially I felt like believing you but by the last line, that Bharat's economy would collapse if relations with BD is strained, it became clear that you are as clueless as anyone. Then I went ahead and googled your stats and I was only proven correct. Bharat's exports to BD was indeed about 17 Bil USD in 22-23, but there was almost 25% decline year on year from 21-22. 25% decline is huge, but I guess nobody witnessed Bharat's economy to crumble. Point is, when you throw in some data, not all consider it to be as gospel truth. Some like me validate it, and you risk exposure by people like me. BD is growing, good for them, but to say that Bharat's economic stability is dependent on BD, it's a stretch, and I would say by a huge margin. People migrating for white collar jobs generally means that the destination country lacks educated/skilled/trained manpower. Only when people migrate for blue collar or labour jobs, it means destination country has a better economy, which means better daily wages, better minimum wages and better social security. These are fundamentals of macro economics and you don't need to study Bharat and BD to learn about this. You can know about this even if you look within Bharat, why people migrate amongst states for jobs, which kind of people migrate from which states to which states, and for what kind of jobs.
