I used to talk this one guy on FB for about a year and we were very close. That time I was 16-17yrs, fresh out of an only girls school hostel with zero exposure to internet. I didn't know anything about LGBTQ except the idea that it's "abnormal". So, when supreme Court finally legalised consensual gay sex, this guy friend joked about now him and his friends are afraid of going out at night as gay men might hunt them down. And I laughed. I was never homophobic but I wasn't particularly supportive as well and I'm ashamed to say that I've passed some toxic masculinity comments towards K-pop men idols as well. So, when that guy made such a comment I didn't see anything wrong in it. I just took it as a joke. By that point of time, I stopped seeing homosexuality as anything abnormal but I still didn't understand the amount of discrimination and pain that they have to suffer everyday. As I spent more time on the internet, following right kind of idols, interacting and reading about experiences of homosexual people, about their sufferings induced by their own family and friends, I was finally able to emphatize with them. Just a few weeks ago, I suddenly remembered the thing that that guy said and I couldn't believe that I was friends with a person of such cheap mentality. He even used to say things like "they look like girls with short hair " when I showed him videos of K-pop men idols. Now that I think about it, I'm glad he's out of my life.
