India and Taiwan are on the same latitude but that's about all they have in common.
India is Taiwan’s 15th or 16th largest trading partner, which works out to about $8 billion in bilateral trade and 200 Taiwanese companies with $4 billion in investment. If you look at the size of India, this is very small, says Mumin Chen, formerly with Taiwan’s trade and cultural mission in Delhi.
He is now back to his job as professor of international relations at National Chung Hsing University in Taichung. Mumin Chen was speaking to StratNews Global on The Gist programme and believes there is a gap between India and Taiwan.
“India’s power is quite influential because of yoga, food, Bollywood, so people know about India but they don’t know what they can do in India, where do they go, what places to visit.”
Taiwan has 150 universities he pointed out but there are none teaching Indian studies or languages like Hindi. The same applies to India where people have heard about Taiwan but few have visited and knowledge draws from study of East Asia with the focus on China and Japan.
In the case of China, Taiwanese companies have invested $200 billion and there are over one lakh firms from the island doing business on the mainland.
“For Taiwan, China used to be a very big market and Taiwanese firms made huge profits there but in the years since Xi Jinping came to power, the business environment has deteriorated and the political situation more tense,” Mumin Chen noted.
But there is growing interest in India given that China is becoming difficult to operate in. He says there are at least four Taiwanese electric vehicle companies that have set up shop in India. A Taiwanese semiconductor firm has also tied up with Tatas for a foundry.
In his view, the only country today with potential for high economic growth is India. The population of all the 10 ASEAN countries is not even half that of India.
Tune in for more in this chat with Mumin Chen, professor of international relations at Taiwan’s National Chung Hsing University.

Taiwan has most vegetarian food and restaurants in Far East, maybe the language problem so your friend can not find vegan food. Besides, Taiwanese vegetarian dishes are very different than South Asian food. It may be confusing sometime.😁

In Taiwan, 40% of the population were pro-Independent and pro-US, according to last election in 2024. But 60% were pro-China and pro-peace. This Taiwanese expert was from Pro-Independent / Pro-US camp, and his analysis on China was biased. Other then that, he take on Taiwan and India relaionship is quite accurate.
@merrick6484

This Taiwanese expert failed to mentioned the close relationship between China and Taiwan at business and civilian level. If we put India and Pakistan in context, you will see the difference. - Average 10 milion Taiwanese (50% of Taiwan population) visit China every year. But you don‘t see half of Pakistan population visited India every year. - China is Taiwan‘s biggest trading partner. 10 out of top 20 Chinese export companies are Taiwanese owned. Taiwan is helping China to earn massive foreign reserves. - Chinese giant companies like DJI for drones and SMIC for semiconductors are run by Taiwanese CEOs.

- Around 2 million Taiwanese lives in China permenently (thats 10% of Taiwanese poulation), and about half million Chinese from China living in Taiwan. The inter-marriage from both sides have produced more than half million babies, and that constitutes almost 15% of all new born babies in Taiwan. - One out of 5 families in Taiwan has family relative in China. Even President Xi‘s wife has relatives in Taiwan. - On the culture and entertainment sector, both sides (together with Hong Kong) is highly integrated.

Far East Asia were not Racist, you can find all kind of people working there, to study and do businese. Philipine are in Taiwan and Japan in large numbers, Vietnamese and Thais in S.Korea and Taiwan. Its rather the Indian culture, work ethics and civil behaviours that puts off host nations, and have negative views on people from South Asia. Just few examples: - The quietness and decent attire in public space. - In Taiwan, strickly no trash and dumping on any street, even for your weekly family refuses. Your family have to wait by the street for rubbish truck to pick up trash from hand to hand. No rubbish is allow to "Touch" the public ground. - Strick rubbish recycling rules down to every little details. The customs and rules goes on. Indians in Far East just have to learn and behave accordingly. Otherwise, its fine.😁

India actually doesn‘t understand Chinese culture as a whole, both China and Taiwan. At civilian level, Chinese and Taiwanese were very much integrated. All civilians knows, Politicians fights to get their political support, there is no actual hate between civilians.

@@merrick6484 apart from semi conductor what capability does Taiwan have ? India is slow in industrial development because India opened its economy in 1991 and India faced many hurdles. You are saying that Indian don't know about Taiwan yea it's true majority of us still don't know about that Taiwan is a country that exists. The question is that what Taiwan knows about India? Answer is nothing Taiwan population is just 20 million whereas 415 million people came out of poverty in India in last 15 years. India didn't got any support from any country just like you got from US , India fought 5 wars after getting independence and significant chunk of our resources goes to defence sector. India is fighting extremist from decades i.e from having kashmir as most hostile region to hosting G 20 there successfully. A decade ago you will not be able to compare India with rest of superpowers but things are changing very rapidly and in 2-3 decades we will catch up soon
