She's actually considered a neo-soul artist like Jill Scott, and erykah Badu. Where really the term neo-soul is a term coined by the industry, not the artist of the time, basically meaning that their sound is not typical soul, but has soul at it's basis; but for most neo-soul artist their sound is more so unique to them, outside of the fact that it has an r&b/soul sound at its core. But yeah, India debuted right after Erykah and Jill, and were all considered a part of this neo-soul explosion sound that hit the industry at that time.

Thanks for reviewing this ^_^ This song was released around the time I started middle school. In school, I never really followed the trends that other girls were doing. I hated makeup and getting dolled up and I was kind of made fun of for being a "plain jane tomboy". Hearing a song like this that said that it's ok to just be yourself, really resonated with me and helped me grow more confident in myself. I wish they made more songs like these now!

i met her on Martha's Vineyard in the summer of 2016. she was one of the NICEST people you'll EVER meet. EVER! she was very down to Earth, approachable, personable, yet she also had a Regal presence about her. no surprise she says in this song that she's a Queen because she carried herself as such (in a good way). i was feet away from her when she sang (acapella) her song "Breathe" in a very surprising impromptu performance in a living room full of over 50 people. incredible person.

the acoustic guitar is actually from a song called "Fun" by a 70s funk band called Brick. "Fun" might have been re-played from scratch instead of directly sampled. Not sure. the song came out in 2001.

A song you should listen to whether you react to it or not is "girl from the gutter" by Kina. She replaced one of the original members of Brownstone then went solo to critical acclaim--mainly on the strength of this song. The song got heavy airplay but Kina wasn't able to find an audience. Most people have never heard some of the many great songs on her album. While we're on great singers who left a group to critical acclaim but failed to find an audience as a solo artist, check out Dionne Farris "I know" and "hopeless." Dionne used to be with the the group arrested development. Goapele wasn't with a group but "closer" is amazing. Also Lalah Hathaway (her father was the legendary donny hathaway) "let me love you." Lalah also did an incredible version of Anita Baker's song "Angel." Her, Dionne Faris and Goapele gave standout performances at the soul train tribute to Anita Baker. India Arie was seen in the audience having a spiritual moment to Lalah's amazing performance.
Indie' Arie is classified as neo-soul it came along during the very early 00s with groups like Zhane and singers like Music & jill Scott...it was a vibe that enveloped the east coast
Since when is Zhane classified as neo soul? I've never heard ANYONE include them in that category, plus they came out way back in 1994. That's roughly the same year neo-soul got its start though with D'Angelo coming out in late 94 into 95. However, India, Jill, and Musiq are all early 2000s artists and neo-soul as a genre peaked around 2000-2001.

I have always loved India Arie, and I connected with her music years ago. Because, myself being an artist the same as she is. I understand and feel here lyrics a little differently. I have this CD, and when she said, that she "rather have a pretty piece of Crystal." I believe that she's making reference to a crystal vase, bowl or beautiful figurine! Rather than a gem stone that some use as a spiritual conduit. I may be wrong, but hope not. Also, she does write her own songs, the same as Prince did!
Her song Ready for Love has got to be one of my all time favorites and you should definitely react to it. The whole voyage to India album is a no-skip classic to this day
